A Study Of Cartenoids Uptake In Human Subjects And Their Metabolites, Yin Chen Nov 1999

A Study Of Cartenoids Uptake In Human Subjects And Their Metabolites, Yin Chen

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, a metabolite of lutein was tentatively shown to result from oxidation of lutein by performing a reduction reaction. The result is important evidence that supports the hypothesis that lutein functions as an antioxidant in the human body. In a long term of dietary supplementary study of zeaxanthin in a human subject, the expected increase in the serum concentration of the supplement was accompanied by an increase in serum concentration of several metabolites. A six-month low dose dietary supplementation with lutein in 2 2 human subjects was performed with an expected result in increase of the serum concentration …

Groundwater Nutrient Loading In Biscayne Bay, Biscayne National Park, Florida, Michael James Byrne Oct 1999

Groundwater Nutrient Loading In Biscayne Bay, Biscayne National Park, Florida, Michael James Byrne

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research documents submarine groundwater discharge along the shore of Biscayne Bay. Seepage meters and groundwater monitoring wells, between the outlets of Mowry and Military Canals, were used to quantify groundwater discharge, nutrient concentration and loading. Discharge is greatest 185 m offshore and then decreases to zero 400 m offshore. Total discharge is 20.6 m3 m-1 d-1. The location of discharge is controlled by distance from shore and sediment characteristics. Generally, nutrient concentrations were highest in groundwater flowing through seepage meters, followed in decreasing order; shallow groundwater, deep groundwater and surface water. The ratios of Mowry …

Domain Specific Architecture Development For Enterprise Systems Based On Common Object Request Broker Architecture (Corba), Vidya G. Bhat Oct 1999

Domain Specific Architecture Development For Enterprise Systems Based On Common Object Request Broker Architecture (Corba), Vidya G. Bhat

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Large business organizations with enterprise wide systems have followed an ad hoc incremental growth pattern. They are either monolithic, that are difficult to replace and maintain, or are components with little or no interoperability between them. Such systems suffer from lack of uniformity and definition in their information technology infrastructure. To migrate from this state, to systems that are extensible, interoperable and non-redundant in functionality it is very important to focus on the architecture. We use the healthcare enterprise system as a case study for the purpose of this thesis. It is indeed difficult, if not impossible to construct the …

Afm And Spr Studies Of Protein Adsorption At Solid/Liquid Interface, Rafael Arechabaleta Jul 1999

Afm And Spr Studies Of Protein Adsorption At Solid/Liquid Interface, Rafael Arechabaleta

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Membrane-like structure formed by surfactant molecules of didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) on both HOPG and gold electrodes were studied with AFM and SPR techniques. The study shows that the thickness of the adsorbed layer of DDAB is strongly dependent on the concentration of the vesicle solution.

We have also investigated the adsorption of redox protein, Cytochrome c, on graphite electrode with in situ tapping mode AFM. The protein adsorbs spontaneously onto the electrode covered with an adsorbed phosphate layer and forms a uniform monolayer. The adsorbed protein exhibits a reversible electron transfer at 0.17 V (Ag/AgCI) once the electrode potential has …
