Infrasound Propagation In Terrestrial Planetary Atmospheres, Lynsey B. Schroeder Dec 2016

Infrasound Propagation In Terrestrial Planetary Atmospheres, Lynsey B. Schroeder

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Acoustic waves in the infrasonic frequency range, that is below 10 Hertz, have been observed to propagate to high altitudes in Earth's atmosphere. These waves have many sources, both natural and artificial, such as seismic events, convective storm systems, and nuclear explosions. Here, we seek to better understand the characteristics of atmospheric infrasound- below 0.1 Hz in particular- so as to improve the ability to detect their presence and sources. It is well-known that ambient attributes of an atmosphere, such as temperature, density, and composition, directly affect the propagation and growth of waves, and therefore it is likely that these …

Tsunami Warning System, Amay Vijay Desai Aug 2016

Tsunami Warning System, Amay Vijay Desai

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The effects of a tsunami on a coastline can be devastating. In an attempt to mitigate the damages caused by tsunamis, and to provide coastal communities with evacuation alerts, it is essential to have early warning systems installed offshore. Tsunami early warning systems can detect the formation of tsunami waves long before they reach shore, providing coastal communities with information about the strength of an incoming tsunami.

Since providing accurate information about oceanic wave patterns is absolutely necessary to forecast the magnitude of a tsunami as it forms, the focus of this research is to develop a novel approach which …

Predicting General Aviation Pilots’ Weather-Related Performance Through A Scenario-Based Written Assessment, Jessica Cruit Jul 2016

Predicting General Aviation Pilots’ Weather-Related Performance Through A Scenario-Based Written Assessment, Jessica Cruit

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Weather-related accidents continue to challenge the general aviation community and with the development of advanced weather technology, GA pilots need additional education and training on how to effectively use these weather products to ensure flight safety. Currently, the literature on aviation weather suggests that there is a gap in both training and assessment strategy for GA pilots. Furthermore, several studies suggest that there needs to be more assessment of weather-related scenario/application questions for the private pilot’s written knowledge exam in order to assess a deeper level of knowledge for weather-related material. The purpose of this study is to design a …

Optical Tracking And Spectral Characterization Of Cubesats For Operational Missions, Forrest Gasdia May 2016

Optical Tracking And Spectral Characterization Of Cubesats For Operational Missions, Forrest Gasdia

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Orbital debris in low Earth orbit is of growing concern to operational satellites from the government and commercial sector. With an uptick in worldwide satellite launches and the growing adoption of the CubeSat standard, the number of small objects in orbit are increasing at a faster pace than ever. As a result, a cascading collision event seems inevitable in the near future.

The United States Strategic Command tracks and determines the orbit of resident space objects using a worldwide network of radar and optical sensors. However, in order to better protect space assets, there has been increased interest in not …

Numerical Case Study Of An Atom-Photon Interaction In A Cavity Exploring Quantum Control, Javier Jalandoni May 2016

Numerical Case Study Of An Atom-Photon Interaction In A Cavity Exploring Quantum Control, Javier Jalandoni

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

We study Magnus expansion (ME) approximation scheme for the interaction between an atom and a single quantized cavity mode (Jaynes-Cumming model) in a closed quantum system in resonance or near resonance for a time-dependent coupling coefficient g(t) in both the interaction and rotating picture by implementing a novel numerical method called MG4 and compare out results to the Runge-Kutta 4th (RK4) order solution to demonstrate the conservation of unitary evolution of the ME. A cursory study of open quantum system is given to encourage the study of ME for dissipative systems. Furthermore, we assume that our time-dependent coupling coefficient g(t) …

Forecast Verification Of The Current Icing Potential (Cip) To Predict Lightning Hazards At U.S. Spaceports, Robert Edward Haley Apr 2016

Forecast Verification Of The Current Icing Potential (Cip) To Predict Lightning Hazards At U.S. Spaceports, Robert Edward Haley

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Government spaceports employ extensive lightning detection networks that may not be available at commercial spaceports. Therefore, the Federal Aviation Administration identified the need for diagnosing the threat of triggered lightning without in-situ measurements. Anecdotal observations of the Aviation Weather Center’s Current Icing Potential (CIP) diagnostic model indicated a potentially high correlation between lightning activity and icing potential. A forecast verification study and supporting representative case studies were conducted to quantify the CIP’s ability to diagnose existing lightning hazards. The study showed that high positive statistical correlations between the CIP and lightning activity do exist, but so do negative correlations. During …

Nonlinear Control Of A Thermoacoustic System With Multiple Heat Sources And Actuators, Mikael O. Molina Sandoval Apr 2016

Nonlinear Control Of A Thermoacoustic System With Multiple Heat Sources And Actuators, Mikael O. Molina Sandoval

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Thermoacoustic instabilities can occur in thermal devices when unsteady heat release is coupled with pressure perturbations. This effect results in excitation of Eigen-acoustic modes of the system. These instabilities can lead to unpredictable behavior of the system. Gas-turbine combustion systems are especially prone to this phenomenon reducing their overall efficiency. Additionally, due to the nature of the combustion, the turbines end up releasing undesired amounts of harmful chemicals to the atmosphere, such as Nitrous Oxide (NOX).

A Rijke tube, representing a resonator with a mean flow and a concentrated heat source, is a convenient system to study the thermoacoustic phenomena. …

Sliding Mode Observers For Distributed Parameter Systems: Theory And Applications, Niloofar Nasiri Kamran Jan 2016

Sliding Mode Observers For Distributed Parameter Systems: Theory And Applications, Niloofar Nasiri Kamran

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Many processes in nature and industry can be described by partial differential equations. PDEs employ quantities such as density, temperature, velocity, etc. and their partial derivatives to model these phenomena. However, in the case of distributed parameter systems, it is not always possible to have access to the states of the systems due to technical difficulties such as lack of sensors. Therefore, there is the need for state observers to estimate the states of the system only having the output of the system available. In this research, the theory of sliding mode and variable structure systems are employed in order …
