Regulation Of Dissolved Arsenic Using Zero-Valent Iron With Gypsum And Sulfate Reducing Bacteria: Laboratory Microcosm And Column Studies, Ying Liu Sep 2018

Regulation Of Dissolved Arsenic Using Zero-Valent Iron With Gypsum And Sulfate Reducing Bacteria: Laboratory Microcosm And Column Studies, Ying Liu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Bench scale microcosm incubation was first conducted in two stages to examine the removal of arsenic (As) by zero-valent iron (ZVI) in the presence of sulfate reducing bacteria, gypsum as well as organic substrates under anaerobic condition. About 98% of dissolved As was removed from solution within 20 days with concurrent decrease of dissolved sulfate and growth of bacterial population. Mineralogy analysis using SEM-EDS found the formation of iron sulfide and Fourier-transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis indicates that some As is associated with pyrite. The main iron corrosion product was found as ferrihydrite with traces of lepidocrocite. Sequential leaching shows …

The Interaction Between Arsenic And Struvite During Coprecipitation And Adsorption Processes, Ning Ma Oct 2014

The Interaction Between Arsenic And Struvite During Coprecipitation And Adsorption Processes, Ning Ma

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The formation of struvite, MgNH4PO4*6H2O (MAP), from wastes is one of the methods that can be used to recover P from wastes efficiently. However, since there are usually toxic components in the wastes, like arsenic (As), the possibility of having toxic contaminants in MAP is a big concern. So, the interaction between As and MAP during coprecipitation (CPT) and adsorption (ADS) processes were studied at pH 8-11. MAP precipitated without As at pH 8-11 was also characterized.

During CPT process, the MAP was precipitated from a MgCl2-(NH4)2HPO4-NaCl-H2O system spiked with As at an initial pH (pHi) of 8-11. The batch …

Effects Of Arsenic And Uvb Radiation On Induction Of Cyclin D1 In Human Keratinocytes., Julian Gonzalez Jan 2012

Effects Of Arsenic And Uvb Radiation On Induction Of Cyclin D1 In Human Keratinocytes., Julian Gonzalez

Dissertations and Theses

Arsenic and Ultraviolet radiation B (UVB) are environmental toxins that have been linked to various epithelial cancers. Arsenic metabolism in humans leads to its collection in the skin, where it encounters and can act with known carcinogen UVB. Epidemiological evidence of the two toxins demonstrates their potential to affect signaling pathways, with various consequences. Here we employ an in vitro model system using Normal Human Epidermal Keratinocytes (NHEK) to identify the effect of arsenic and UVB on humans and whether they work synergistically. We find that although both cause induction of cyclin D1, culturing cells with both co-mutagens does not …
