Parameter Calibration Method Based On Ga Technique For Multi-Event, Yeonjoo Kim, Eun-Sung Chung, Kwangjai Won, Byungho Kong, Kyungil Gil

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Accurate parameter estimation based catchment modeling systems requires considerable work to establish credibility. In this paper, a methodology for parameter estimation of hydrologic simulation model is proposed to simultaneously include several rainfall events using Shannon entropy. The proposed methodology uses Genetic Algorithm(GA) optimization techniques for the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). Shannon entropy theory was applied to calculate weights according to each rainfall event in study area. A case study application was undertaken using the Milyang-dam basin, in Korea. Three events are applied to calculate Shannon entropy weights. Then, Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency(NSE) & Root Mean Square Error(RMSE) are compared with those …

Optimized Use Of Water From Multiple Sources In Micro Water Grid Systems: A Modeling Approach, Hyeongrak Cho, Jungwoo Jung, Sangho Lee, Soo Kwen Chae

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Micro water grid (MWG) is a novel approach to allow high reliability, diversification of water sources, low energy consumption, and cost reduction. Although it is not well-defined, it has potential for efficient management of urban water. MWG is suitable for use in small-scale buildings and towns, which have various uses of water produced from multiple source waters. Accordingly, design of MWG is challenging without proper tools to predict its performance. This research focused on the development and application of a model for optimized use of water from multiple sources in MWG systems. The model was comprised of two modules including …

A Hybrid Optimization Method For Real-Time Pump-Scheduling, Valeria Puleo, Mark Morley, Gabriele Freni, Dragan A. Savić

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Linear, non-linear and dynamic programming, heuristics and evolutionary computation are amongst the techniques which have been applied to obtain solutions to optimal pump-scheduling problems. Most of these either greatly simplify the complex water distribution system or require significant time to solve the problem. The scheduling of pumps is frequently undertaken in near-real time, in order to minimize cost and maximize energy savings. However, this requires a computationally efficient algorithm that can rapidly identify an acceptable solution. In this paper, a hybrid optimization model is presented, coupling Linear Programming and Genetic Algorithms. The resulting hybrid optimization model has demonstrated more rapid …

A Novel Nested Dynamic Programming (Ndp) Algorithm For Multipurpose Reservoir Optimization, Blagoj Delipetrev, Andreja Jonoski, Dimitri P. Solomatine

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

We present a novel nDP (nested dynamic programming) algorithm for multipurpose reservoir optimization. The nDP algorithm is built from two algorithms: 1) dynamic programming (DP) and 2) nested optimal water allocation algorithm implemented with Simplex and quadratic Knapsack. The main objective function is to minimize the sum of weighted square deviations of each objective over the whole time horizon. Each objective is described with its water demand or target and its weights at each time step. The nDP algorithm begins with the DP optimization algorithm that at each DP transition executes the nested optimal water allocation algorithm. The optimal water …

Real-Time Reservoir Operation For Drought Management Considering Ensemble Streamflow Predictions Derived From Operational Forecasts Of Precipitation In Japan, Daisuke Nohara, Tomoharu Hori

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Ensemble hydrological predictions are considered to be useful for robust reservoir operation as they include multiple possible hydrological scenarios in the future as well as dispersion of the predictions, from which the degree of prediction uncertainty can be estimated. Although operational ensemble hydrological predictions have been available in many regions, they have not yet been widely used in the actual reservoir management due to the difficulty in the handling such complex information. In order to facilitate effective utilization of ensemble hydrological predictions in the actual reservoir management, a real-time reservoir operation method for drought management is developed considering operational ensemble …

This paper aims at presenting a concept for regulating water abstraction from a well field which ensures an efficient exploration of river filtrate while complying with defined minimum residence time of inflowing water. Being located on an island between a river and an attendant channel, the investigated well field consists of eight radial collector wells aligned parallel to the river flow direction. The water-level in the river is kept comparatively constant due to a downstream hydropower plant. In the channel, the water level is controlled by two weirs. Following a defined hydrograph with an amplitude of about one meter, the …

Experimental Design For Model Discrimination And Precise Parameter Estimation In Wds Analysis, Giovanna Darvini Aug 2014

Experimental Design For Model Discrimination And Precise Parameter Estimation In Wds Analysis, Giovanna Darvini

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

In water distribution system (WDS) analysis, the initial stages of model assembling, which involve collecting basic WDS data (network topology, asset data, etc.), demand allocation and validation or correction of gross input data errors, are important precursors for calibration of the network. During these first steps one must define which model of the network is the most suitable one for a particular application, as the final results and conclusions usually depend on the model used to perform the simulations and provide the interpretation of the analyzed problem. Sometimes, it is not possible to make a proper choice based solely on …

Using Multi-Objective Optimization To Maximize Multiple Benefits For Sustainable Drainage Design, Jo-Fai Chow, Dragan A. Savić, David Fortune, Zoran Kapelan, Netsanet Mebrate Aug 2014

Using Multi-Objective Optimization To Maximize Multiple Benefits For Sustainable Drainage Design, Jo-Fai Chow, Dragan A. Savić, David Fortune, Zoran Kapelan, Netsanet Mebrate

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

For many years, drainage design was mainly about providing sufficient network capacity. This traditional approach had been successful with the aid of computer software and technical guidance. However, the drainage design criteria had been evolving due to rapid population growth, urbanisation, climate change and increasing sustainability awareness. Sustainable drainage systems that bring benefits in addition to water management have been recommended as better alternatives to conventional pipes and storages. Although the concepts and good practice guidance had already been communicated to decision makers and public for years, network capacity still remains a key design focus in many circumstances while the …

Sequential Nonlinear Model Predictive Control Of A Drainage Canal Using Implicit Diffusive Wave Model, Min Xu, Dirk Schwanenberg Aug 2014

Sequential Nonlinear Model Predictive Control Of A Drainage Canal Using Implicit Diffusive Wave Model, Min Xu, Dirk Schwanenberg

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Model predictive control (MPC) is an efficient control method to regulate water systems, for both water quantity and quality. It can generate optimal control solutions based on model predictions over a finite horizon. There are many ways of categorizing MPC. In this research, the predictive control uses a nonlinear internal model and solves optimization in a sequential manner, thus called Sequential Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (SeNMPC). An implicit scheme is applied on the internal model, diffusive wave model, to avoid time step limitation for model stability. This is often important in real-time control applications where large control time step and …

Optimizing Operating Rules Of Multiple Source Water Supply Systems In Terms Of System Reliability And Resulting Operating Costs: Survey Of Simulation-Optimization Modeling Approaches Based On General Purpose Tools, Jordi Meseguer, Gabriela Cembrano, Josep M. Mirats, Eduard Bonada

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Management of a water supply system from the point of view of the conjunctive use of water sources is a very complex problem whose solution is not just obtained using analytical models but also through a negotiation process among stakeholders and in which Public Bodies have a main role. For these reasons, this problem has been addressed using conservative approaches based on simulation models or simulation – linear optimization models parameterized using few parameters. These approaches have certain strengths but also certain drawbacks or constraints. In general these conservative approaches are already covered by existing generalized modelling tools (i.e. Aquator, …

Comparison Of Statistical Failure Models To Support Sewer System Operation, Maria Torres, Juan Pablo Rodriguez, Joao P. Leitao

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Currently, achieving appropriate operative performance of water infrastructure has become a high priority in urbanized areas. Particularly, providing reliable sewerage service is central for human well-being and its development (Kleidorfer, et al. 2013). Having that wastewater system management is an increasingly complex task due to a number of hardly predictable factors (e.g. deterioration of system components and climate variability), recent research efforts have been focusing on developing methods to identify optimum proactive rehabilitation and maintenance strategies, some of which are based on the identification of the sewerage structures in most need of attention. To meet such a goal, different forecast …

Hybrid Control-Oriented Modeling Of Combined Sewer Networks: Barcelona Case Study, Bernat Joseph-Duran, Carlos Ocampo-Martinez, Gabriela Cembrano

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

A hybrid linear model for real-time optimization-based control of a combined sewer network has been developed to be used for the minimization of pollution during storm events. The model takes into account delays and attenuation in sewers together with piecewise linear approximations for flow over weirs, overflows in junctions and flow re-entering the network after overflows. Using the proposed model, an Optimal Control Problem (OCP) is formulated, which can be efficiently solved by means of a mixed integer linear or quadratic programming problem. The performance of a Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy solving consecutive OCPs is assessed by means of …

Stochastic Assessment Of Environmental Flows In Semiarid Environments, Cristina Aguilar, Marta Egüen, Jose María Perales, Miguel A. Losada, María José Polo

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

The regimen of environmental flows (EF) must be included as terms of environmental demand in the management of water resources. Even though there are numerous methods for the computation of EF, the criteria applied at different steps in the calculation process are quite subjective whereas the results are fixed values that must be meet by water planners. This study presents a friendly-user tool for the assessment of the probability of compliance of a certain EF scenario with the natural regimen in a semiarid area in southern Spain. 250 replications of a 25-yr period of different hydrological variables (rainfall, minimum and …

Wibasin: Basin Management Through An Integrated Platform, Xavier Llort, Rafael Sánchez-Diezma, David Sancho, Alvaro Rodríguez, Marc Berenguer, Daniel Sempere-Torres

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

A key issue in basin and dam management is the correct estimation of accumulated rainfall (observed as well as forecasted) over the catchment (over the characteristic concentration time for critical short-term management, and over longer time periods to anticipate rainfall situations). In this work we present a platform for basin and dam management, called WiBasin, which integrates different sources of precipitation (both observed and forecasted) in a continuous time series of hourly rainfall accumulation fields, having the best precipitation estimation available at each time step. Optimal rainfall estimates used for the past time steps are based on a geostatistical approach …

Urban drainage systems are affected by various regional characteristics such as sewer properties, misaligned connections, manhole ground level, and design flood stage at outlet. Therefore, combinatorial characteristic of selecting optimal location of storage facilities from many candidate locations gets even more complicated and becomes a challenging task. The process of selection is conducted using system analyses to address the effects that provide for high efficiency and low damage. This paper focuses on developing an optimal design model for determination of the storage reservoir locations considering regional importance. For cases of urban inundation, importance of flooded region considering the damage needs …

Optimization Of Groundwater Remediation With New Efficient Parallel Algorithm For Global Optimization, Min Pang, Christine A. Shoemaker

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Application of optimization algorithm to PDE modeling groundwater remediation can greatly reduce remediation cost. However, groundwater remediation analysis requires a computational expensive simulation, therefore, effective parallel optimization could potentially greatly reduce computational expense. The optimization algorithm used in this research is Parallel Stochastic radial basis function. This is designed for global optimization of computationally expensive functions with multiple local optima and it does not require derivatives. In each iteration of the algorithm, an RBF is updated based on all the evaluated points in order to approximate expensive function. Then the new RBF surface is used to generate the next set …

A Simulation Based Optimal Control System For Water Resources, Asier Lacasta, Mario Morales-Hernández, Pilar Brufau, Pilar García-Navarro Aug 2014

A Simulation Based Optimal Control System For Water Resources, Asier Lacasta, Mario Morales-Hernández, Pilar Brufau, Pilar García-Navarro

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Nowadays, the increasing demand of water resources has become one of the most relevant issues when water supply must be guaranteed as in the case of irrigation comunities. It becomes difficult to provide the predictive optimal behavior of regulation structures when the regime of the flow is changing in time and, moreover, when this regulation modifies the hydraulic conditions of the structure. One of the most widely used solution for control is PID. The disadvantages of PID control are the difficulties in the presence of non-linearities as well as the PID parameters tuning. Taking into account previous works about sluice …

Cawat – A Catchment Water Allocation Tool For Integrated Irrigation And Aquaculture Development In Small Watersheds, Xueliang Cai, Suan Pheng Kam, Bui Tan Yen, Aditya Sood, Hoanh Chu Thai

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Water resources development has seen little development in the vast rural areas of Sub-Sahara Africa (SSA) due to lack of investment, means of access and poor policy environment. In search of sustainable and efficient water resources development, participatory approach is widely accepted as a key strategy for water resources development and conservations in many SSA countries. To encourage bottom-up solutions for local water resources development, a Catchment Water Allocation Tool (CaWAT) was developed to aid rural water resources planning for agriculture in small watersheds. The tool is based on water balance accounting to examine water allocations among different users. It …

Study On Optimization Of The Integrated Operation Of Dams Using Ensemble Prediction, Satoru Oishi, Hiroko Masuda Aug 2014

Study On Optimization Of The Integrated Operation Of Dams Using Ensemble Prediction, Satoru Oishi, Hiroko Masuda

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Flood control is one of the most important issues of reservoir operation. Rivers in island countries like Japan, Philippines and Indonesia that have smaller reservoirs than continental countries needs short term reservoir operation for flood control. In Japan, typhoons give dominant amount of water to reservoirs. Pre-release of water which makes effective use of the capacity of a reservoir requires the rainfall amount forecast (hyetograph). Therefore, weather forecast of typhoons is indispensable for flood control. Masuda and Oishi (2013) developed the reservoir control operation model using stochastic dynamic programming with one week ensemble weather forecast. One week ensemble forecast consists …

Comparison Of Various Phased Approaches For The Constrained Minimum-Cost Design Of Water Distribution Networks, Enrico Creaco, Marco Franchini, Tom Walski Aug 2014

Comparison Of Various Phased Approaches For The Constrained Minimum-Cost Design Of Water Distribution Networks, Enrico Creaco, Marco Franchini, Tom Walski

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

This work is aimed at analyzing and comparing three different phased approaches for constrained minimum-cost design of water distribution networks: the single-step design with demand feedback, the multi-step design without demand feedback and the multi-step design with demand feedback. The difference between the single-step design and the multi-step design lies in the fact that whereas the former entails optimizing a single construction step at a time, i.e. the current construction phase, the latter is based on the phasing of construction and then is aimed at optimizing the current construction phase and all the subsequent phases, included inside a certain temporal …

A Hybrid Piecewise-Linear/Newton Approach To Solve Multi-Period Production And Distribution Planning Problems In Large Water Supply Networks, Derek Verleye, El-Houssaine Aghezzaf

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Efficient production and distribution planning of water is a challenging problem that many drinking water companies face. The development of effective tools to optimally supply this vital resource is therefore essential. Nowadays, many drinking water companies rely on simulation software packages (EPANET, InfoWorks) for the daily operation of their network. This software allows the user to make accurate and thus reliable simulations of the network for a chosen configuration. However, the user-defined scenario’s do not consider the lowest operating costs. Very often the pumps are working at a suboptimal point in their system curve and water production centers are not …
