This paper shows how students can be guided to integrate elementary mathematical analyses with motion planning for typical educational robots. Rather than using calculus as in comprehensive works on motion planning, we show students can achieve interesting results using just simple linear regression tools and trigonometric analyses. Experiments with one robotics platform show that use of these tools can lead to passable navigation through dead reckoning even if students have limited experience with use of sensors, programming, and mathematics.
A Self-Contained Course In The Mathematical Theory Of Statistics For Scientists & Engineers With An Emphasis On Predictive Regression Modeling & Financial Applications., Tim Smith
Timothy Smith
Preface & Acknowledgments
This textbook is designed for a higher level undergraduate, perhaps even first year graduate, course for engineering or science students who are interested to gain knowledge of using data analysis to make predictive models. While there is no statistical perquisite knowledge required to read this book, due to the fact that the study is designed for the reader to truly understand the underlying theory rather than just learn how to read computer output, it would be best read with some familiarity of elementary statistics. The book is self-contained and the only true perquisite knowledge is a solid …

Is Heyser Still Relevant?, Douglas R. Jones
Is Heyser Still Relevant?, Douglas R. Jones
Douglas R Jones
The author, highlighting excerpts from the writings of Richard C. Heyser, argues that Heyser continues to be relevant in the field of audio engineering nearly three decades after his death. Using material from the Richard C. Heyser Collection, held in the Columbia College Chicago Archives & Special Collections, the author chose comments from the collection, both published and unpublished "which should be at least intriguing and possibly down right shocking."
A New Undergraduate Curriculum On Mathematical Biology At University Of Dayton, Muhammad Usman, Amit Singh
A New Undergraduate Curriculum On Mathematical Biology At University Of Dayton, Muhammad Usman, Amit Singh
Amit Singh
The beginning of modern science is marked by efforts of pioneers to understand the natural world using a quantitative approach. As Galileo wrote, "the book of nature is written in the language of mathematics". The traditional undergraduate course curriculum is heavily focused on individual disciplines like biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics rather than interdisciplinary courses. This fragmented teaching of sciences in majority of universities leave biology outside the quantitative and mathematical approaches. The landscape of biomedical science has transformed dramatically with advances in high throughput experimental approaches, which led to the huge amount of data. The best possible approach to generate …

The goal of the assignment was to familiarize students with what it means to learn mathematics outside of a classroom environment. This is connected to the main goal of the course, which is to develop skills in proof writing and in technical presentations.

Information Literacy In The Discipline, Mellon Grant For Math 310 Partnership With D. Roberts, Crystal Boyce, Daniel Roberts

As of now, MATH 310 has neither a required writing component nor an assignment that deals with information literacy. We are proposing the implementation of a new assignment that would incorporate both of these components. This assignment would have multiple stages spread over approximately a one-month time period.

In this paper we review the IEEE/ACM CC2001 model. We then describe our proposed core CS curriculum comprising four strands: programming languages, algorithms, discrete mathematics and systems. These sequences are to be taught over the first two years of the Bachelor of Computer Science Degree and need to be taken in parallel.

Barriers To Using Ict In Mathematics Teaching: Issues In Methodology, Rebecca Hudson, Anne L. Porter, Mark I. Nelson
Associate Professor Mark Nelson
In this paper we examine the barriers to using ICT of secondary mathematics teachers in the classroom. The sample contained 114 mathematics teachers from public secondary schools in New South Wales (Australia). The instrument used in this study was a survey questionnaire mailed to secondary schools in the New South Wales Department of Education and Training. The questionnaire design is a closed-response with five open-ended questions. Results of the study showed that lack of access to computer labs is the number one barrier to using ICT in the classroom. But when a second analysis using a logistic regression analysis modeling …

Can The Love Of Learning Be Taught?, R. Nillsen
Professor Rodney Nillsen
This paper is an expanded version of a talk given at a Generic Skills Workshop at the University of Wollongong, and was originally intended for academic staff from any discipline and general staff with an interest in teaching. The issues considered in the paper include the capacity of all to learn, the distinction between learning as understanding and learning as information, the interaction between the communication and the content of ideas, the tension between perception and content in communication between persons, and the human functions of a love of learning. In teaching, the creation of a fear-free environment is emphasised, …
Pursuing Analogies Between Differential Equations And Difference Equations, David L. Abrahamson
Pursuing Analogies Between Differential Equations And Difference Equations, David L. Abrahamson
David L. Abrahamson
The study of ordinary differential equations has long been a staple in mathematics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Recently, instruction in the study of difference equations has widened, primarily due to the expanded role of the digital computer in mathematics. The two topics are inextricably linked at all levels, from elementary techniques through current research questions. Pursuing the analogies between these fields of study can only deepen the understanding of each. In particular, the study of many elementary topics in difference equations, requiring not even the use of calculus, can serve as a founda- tion for intuition and …

When A Mechanical Model Goes Nonlinear, Lisa D. Humphreys, P. J. Mckenna
Lisa D Humphreys
This paper had its origin in a curious discovery by the first author in research performed with an undergraduate student. The following odd fact was noticed: when a mechanical model of a suspension bridge (linear near equilibrium but allowed to slacken at large distance in one direction) is shaken with a low-frequency periodic force, several different periodic responses can result, many with high-frequency components.

Boundary Effects In Large-Aspect-Ratio Lasers, G.K. Harkness, W.J. Firth, John B. Geddes, J.V Moloney, E.M. Wright
John B. Geddes
We study theoretically the effect of transverse boundary conditions on the traveling waves foundin infinitely extended and positively detuned laser systems. We find that for large-aspect-ratiosystems, well above threshold and away from the boundaries, the traveling waves persist. Sourceand sink defects are observed on the boundaries, and in very-large-aspect-ratio systems these defectscan also exist away from the boundaries. The transverse size of the sink defect, relative to the sizeof the transverse domain, is important in determining the final pattern observed, and so, close tothreshold, standing waves are always observed.

The Onset Of Oscillations In Microvascular Blood Flow, John B. Geddes, Russell T. Carr, Nathaniel J. Karst, Fan Wu
John B. Geddes
We explore the stability of equilibrium solution(s) of a simple model of microvascular blood flow in a two-node network. The model takes the form of convection equations for red blood cell concentration, and contains two important rheological effects—the Fåhræus–Lindqvist effect, which governs viscosity of blood flow in a single vessel, and the plasma skimming effect, which describes the separation of red blood cells at diverging nodes. We show that stability is governed by a linear system of integral equations, and we study the roots of the associated characteristic equation in detail. We demonstrate using a combination of analytical and numerical …

Maximal Functions Measuring Smoothness, Ronald A. Devore, Robert C. Sharpley
Robert Sharpley
Maximal functions which measure the smoothness of a function are introduced and studied from the point of view of their relationship to classical smoothness and their use in proving embedding theorems, extension theorems and various results on differentiation. New spaces of functions which generalize Sobolev spaces are introduced.
