Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Modeling the structure of culinary recipes is the core of recipe representation learning. Current approaches mostly focus on extracting the workflow graph from recipes based on text descriptions. Process images, which constitute an important part of cooking recipes, has rarely been investigated in recipe structure modeling. We study this recipe structure problem from a multi-modal learning perspective, by proposing a prerequisite tree to represent recipes with cooking images at a step-level granularity. We propose a simple-yet-effective two-stage framework to automatically construct the prerequisite tree for a recipe by (1) utilizing a trained classifier to detect pairwise prerequisite relations that fuses …

The release note is one of the most important software artifacts that serves as a bridge for communication among stakeholders. Release notes contain a set of crucial information, such as descriptions of enhancements, improvements, potential issues, development, evolution, testing, and maintenance of projects throughout the whole development lifestyle. A comprehensive understanding of what makes a good release note and how to write one for different stakeholders would be highly beneficial. However, in practice, the release note is often neglected by stakeholders and has not to date been systematically investigated by researchers. In this paper, we conduct a mixed methods study …

The Gap Of Semantic Parsing: A Survey On Automatic Math Word Problem Solvers, Dongxiang Zhang, Lei Wang, Luming Zhang, Bing Tian Dai, Heng Tao Shen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Solving mathematical word problems (MWPs) automatically is challenging, primarily due to the semantic gap between human-readable words and machine-understandable logics. Despite the long history dated back to the 1960s, MWPs have regained intensive attention in the past few years with the advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Solving MWPs successfully is considered as a milestone towards general AI. Many systems have claimed promising results in self-crafted and small-scale datasets. However, when applied on large and diverse datasets, none of the proposed methods in the literature achieves high precision, revealing that current MWP solvers still have much room for improvement. This motivated …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Currently, Android malware detection is mostly performed on server side against the increasing number of malware. Powerful computing resource provides more exhaustive protection for app markets than maintaining detection by a single user. However, apart from the applications (apps) provided by the official market (i.e., Google Play Store), apps from unofficial markets and third-party resources are always causing serious security threats to end-users. Meanwhile, it is a time-consuming task if the app is downloaded first and then uploaded to the server side for detection, because the network transmission has a lot of overhead. In addition, the uploading process also suffers …

Heat Kernel Signature Extraction Algorithm Based On Mesh Simplification, Haisheng Li, Sun Li, Cai Qiang, Cao Jian

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Heat kernel signature has been proposed for 3D model feature extraction in recent years. However, the performance of heat kernel signature is inefficient, especially when the models have large number of vertices. Mesh simplification algorithm based on quadric error metrics was used to preprocess 3D model and the heat kernel signature was calculated based on the simplified model. Experiments show that the feature extracting time of the simplified model is less than the original model. The more vertices of the original model, the more obvious of the improved efficiency. The heat kernel signature of simplified model is consistent with …

Improved Method Of Extracting Hks Descriptors And Non-Rigid Classification Applications, Jingyu Jiang, Lili Wan

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In order to make the HKS(heat kernel signature)have wider applicability in non-rigid shape analysis, an improved method of extracting HKS descriptors for unconnected non-rigid 3D models was proposed. The largest connected component was obtained. The HKS descriptors of the largest connected component were calculated and those descriptors of the boundary vertices and their 1-ring neighbors were excluded. For shape classifications, the dictionary was learned for each class based on the sparse representation theory. For a test model, each dictionary was utilized to sparsely represent its descriptor set, and the most appropriate dictionary was determined by the representation error, …

Motion Object Feature Extraction Method Based On Multi-Feature Fusion, Xidao Luan, Yuxiang Xie, Zhang Xin, Niu Xiao

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Motion object feature extraction is the basis of motion object classification. Traditionally motion object classification mainly depends on single feature extraction which is sensitive to the aspects like motion object detection area, angle, scale and noise disturbance, thus decreases the classification efficiency. To solve these problems and improve the robustness of the algorithms, a motion object feature extraction method based on multi-feature fusion was proposed. In this method, width height ratio feature, rotation invariant uniform local binary pattern feature and SIFT feature were considered, and by fusing them into the SVM and KNN classifier, motion object classification was carried …

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In order to detect pedestrians effectively, a multi-pose pedestrian detection method based on posterior multiple sparse dictionaries was proposed. Through pre-learning multiple different sparse dictionaries, and sparse coding the image, statistics for each dictionary corresponds to sparse coding histogram as the pedestrian image feature descriptor. The common information of multiple sparse dictionary features of all positive samples was obtained, and the feature of a single pedestrian sample was weighted, and the features of a posteriori multiple sparse dictionary could be obtained. Then pedestrians of different poses and views were divided into subclasses with clustering algorithm. A classifier was trained …

Chaff From The Wheat: Characterizing And Determining Valid Bug Reports, Yuanrui Fan, Xin Xia, David Lo, Ahmed E. Hassan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Developers use bug reports to triage and fix bugs. When triaging a bug report, developers must decide whether the bug report is valid (i.e., a real bug). A large amount of bug reports are submitted every day, with many of them end up being invalid reports. Manually determining valid bug report is a difficult and tedious task. Thus, an approach that can automatically analyze the validity of a bug report and determine whether a report is valid can help developers prioritize their triaging tasks and avoid wasting time and effort on invalid bug reports. In this study, motivated by the …

Faculty Publications, Computer Science

In the graph classification problem, given is a family of graphs and a group of different categories, and we aim to classify all the graphs (of the family) into the given categories. Earlier approaches, such as graph kernels and graph embedding techniques have focused on extracting certain features by processing the entire graph. However, real world graphs are complex and noisy and these traditional approaches are computationally intensive. With the introduction of the deep learning framework, there have been numerous attempts to create more efficient classification approaches. We modify a kernel graph convolutional neural network approach, that extracts subgraphs (patches) …

Neighbourhood Structure Preserving Cross-Modal Embedding For Video Hyperlinking, Yanbin Hao, Chong-Wah Ngo, Benoit Huet

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Video hyperlinking is a task aiming to enhance the accessibility of large archives, by establishing links between fragments of videos. The links model the aboutness between fragments for efficient traversal of video content. This paper addresses the problem of link construction from the perspective of cross-modal embedding. To this end, a generalized multi-modal auto-encoder is proposed.& x00A0;The encoder learns two embeddings from visual and speech modalities, respectively, whereas each of the embeddings performs self-modal and cross-modal translation of modalities. Furthermore, to preserve the neighbourhood structure of fragments, which is important for video hyperlinking, the auto-encoder is devised to model data …

A Machine Learning Approach To The Perception Of Phrase Boundaries In Music, Evan Matthew Petratos Jan 2020

A Machine Learning Approach To The Perception Of Phrase Boundaries In Music, Evan Matthew Petratos

Senior Projects Fall 2020

Segmentation is a well-studied area of research for speech, but the segmentation of music has typically been treated as a separate domain, even though the same acoustic cues that constitute information in speech (e.g., intensity, timbre, and rhythm) are present in music. This study aims to sew the gap in research of speech and music segmentation. Musicians can discern where musical phrases are segmented. In this study, these boundaries are predicted using an algorithmic, machine learning approach to audio processing of acoustic features. The acoustic features of musical sounds have localized patterns within sections of the music that create aurally …

Application Of The Benford’S Law To Social Bots And Information Operations Activities, Lale Madahali, Margeret Hall Jan 2020

Application Of The Benford’S Law To Social Bots And Information Operations Activities, Lale Madahali, Margeret Hall

Interdisciplinary Informatics Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Benford's law shows the pattern of behavior in normal systems. It states that in natural systems digits' frequency have a certain pattern such that the occurrence of first digits in numbers are unevenly distributed. In systems with natural behavior, numbers begin with a “1” are more common than numbers beginning with “9”. It implies that if the distribution of first digits deviate from the expected distribution, it is indicative of fraud. It has many applications in forensic accounting, stock markets, finding abnormal data in survey data, and natural science. We investigate whether social media bots and Information Operations activities are …

A Novel Penalty-Based Wrapper Objective Function For Feature Selection In Big Data Using Cooperative Co-Evolution, A.N.M. Bazlur Rashid, Mohiuddin Ahmed, Leslie F. Sikos, Paul Haskell-Dowland

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The rapid progress of modern technologies generates a massive amount of high-throughput data, called Big Data, which provides opportunities to find new insights using machine learning (ML) algorithms. Big Data consist of many features (also called attributes); however, not all these are necessary or relevant, and they may degrade the performance of ML algorithms. Feature selection (FS) is an essential preprocessing step to reduce the dimensionality of a dataset. Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are widely used search algorithms for FS. Using classification accuracy as the objective function for FS, EAs, such as the cooperative co-evolutionary algorithm (CCEA), achieve higher accuracy, even …

Retinal Vessel Segmentation Using Modified Symmetrical Local Threshold, Umar Özgünalp Jan 2020

Retinal Vessel Segmentation Using Modified Symmetrical Local Threshold, Umar Özgünalp

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Retinal vessel segmentation is important for the identification of many diseases including glaucoma, hypertensive retinopathy, diabetes, and hypertension. Moreover, retinal vessel diameter is associated with cardiovascular mortality. Accurate detection of blood vessels improves the detection of exudates in color fundus images, as well as detection of the retinal nerve, optic disc, or fovea. A retinal vessel is a darker stripe on a lighter background. Thus, the objective is very similar to the lane detection task for intelligent vehicles. A lane on a road is a light stripe on a darker background (i.e. asphalt). For lane detection, the symmetrical local threshold …
