Can The Financialised Atmosphere Be Effectively Regulated And Accounted For?, Patty Mcnicholas, Carolyn Windsor

Carolyn Windsor

Purpose – This paper aims to carry out a critical analysis of the proposed Australian emissions trading scheme (ETS) as a complex market solution to reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs). Specifically it seeks to examine the financial regulatory infrastructure that will more than likely oversee the Australian ETS, the same regulatory infrastructure which failed to prevent the global financial crisis.Design/methodology/approach – A critical examination of the financialisation of the atmosphere that follows the growth of the financialisation of capitalism when economic activity shifted from production and service sectors to finance. Financialisation of capitalism is supported by capitalist regulation influenced by neo-liberal …

Despite the absence of large-scale glaciation, the Australian continent has experienced substantial environmental change throughout the Quaternary period. This is especially pronounced in central Australia, where one seventh of the continent is drained internally to the depocentre, and lowest point in Australia, Lake Eyre (Figure 1). Research has shown that at one time, large sandy braided and meandering rivers carried water through dunefields to a large freshwater lake system. Today, the rivers are hostage to the dunefield, and floodwaters might only reach Lake Eyre once every ten years or so. In order to understand the development of this arid desert …

2014-15 Central West State Of The Environment Report, Neil Dufty Oct 2015

2014-15 Central West State Of The Environment Report, Neil Dufty

Neil Dufty

A State of the Environment (SoE) Report is an important management tool which aims to provide the community and Council with information on the condition of the environment in the local area to assist in decision-making. Since 2007, 17 local Councils of the Greater Central West Region of NSW (Australia) have joined to produce Regional SoE Reports as part of Council reporting requirements. Recent changes to NSW legislation mean that Councils are no longer required to produce SoE Reports each year, but only once every four years, in the year of the Council election (which will next be in 2016). …

A Forecasting Tool For Predicting Australia's Domestic Airline Passenger Demand Using A Genetic Algorithm, Panarat Srisaeng, Glenn Baxter, Steven Richardson, Graham Wild Oct 2015

A Forecasting Tool For Predicting Australia's Domestic Airline Passenger Demand Using A Genetic Algorithm, Panarat Srisaeng, Glenn Baxter, Steven Richardson, Graham Wild

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This study has proposed and empirically tested for the first time genetic algorithm optimization models for modelling Australia’s domestic airline passenger demand, as measured by enplaned passengers (GAPAXDE model) and revenue passenger kilometres performed (GARPKSDE model). Data was divided into training and testing datasets; 74 training datasets were used to estimate the weighting factors of the genetic algorithm models and 13 out-of-sample datasets were used for testing the robustness of the genetic algorithm models. The genetic algorithm parameters used in this study comprised population size (n): 200; the generation number: 1,000; and mutation rate: 0.01. The modelling results have shown …

Provenance, Diagenesis, Tectonic Setting, And Geochemistry Of Hawkesbury Sandstone (Middle Triassic), Southern Sydney Basin, Australia, Samir Mahmoud Zaid, Fahad Al Gahtani

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Hawkesbury Sandstone is an important groundwater reservoir in the southern part of the Sydney Basin, Australia. However, its diagenesis and provenance and its impact in reservoir quality are virtually unknown. The present study aims to reconstruct the parent rock assemblages of the Hawkesbury Sandstone, their tectonic provenance, and the physiographic conditions under which these sediments were deposited. Samples from the EAW 18a and EDEN 115 field representing the Middle Triassic Hawkesbury Sandstone were studied using a combination of petrographic, mineralogical, and geochemical techniques. The Hawkesbury Sandstone is yellowish brown in color, siliceous, and partly calcareous; it originated as sands …

Failure Of Science, Death Of Nature, H.F. Recher Jan 2015

Failure Of Science, Death Of Nature, H.F. Recher

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

As a people, Australians have lost contact with the world of nature, Risking the collapse of civilization. One factor in the alienation of nature in Australia is the failure of the scientific community to take responsibility for the technology created by the knowledge generated from scientific research. Science has failed to protect Australia's flora and fauna. Scientists must communicate more widely with society, but need to be educated on how to communicate and on their ethical responsibilities to others and other species. Government needs to show leadership in environmental management and nature conservation, while conservationists need to 'invert the paradigm', …
