An Exploratory Study Of The Lived Experience Of Being An Intelligence Analyst, Sharon Moss, Jeff Corkill, Eyal Gringart
An Exploratory Study Of The Lived Experience Of Being An Intelligence Analyst, Sharon Moss, Jeff Corkill, Eyal Gringart
Australian Security and Intelligence Conference
Since the World Trade Centre terror attacks of 2001 the intelligence domain has grown rapidly. In keeping with this growth has been a significant increase of scholarly interest in the domain. The intelligence literature is dominated by research into the failures of the discipline, organisational structure and the politics of intelligence. The intelligence analyst is a critical component of the intelligence domain yet is remarkably absent from the intelligence literature. This research seeks to address that imbalance by examining the lived experience of the analyst operating in the law enforcement intelligence domain. To this end, interpretive phenomenology was employed to …
The Contemporary Australian Intelligence Domain - A Multi Dimension Examination, Alan Davies, Jeff Corkill
The Contemporary Australian Intelligence Domain - A Multi Dimension Examination, Alan Davies, Jeff Corkill
Australian Security and Intelligence Conference
In the complex and interconnected post 9/11 world the roles and functions of intelligence have evolved beyond being a secret capability of governments focused on national security needs. Intelligence has become recognised as a critical function necessary to support decision making across the full breadth of government and corporate activity. The concept of an intelligence community being purely national security centric and bounded by secrecy has become limited. Intelligence in support of decision making has become a far broader domain than previously believed. This paper investigates the degree of intelligence embedded‐ness across government agencies and departments at the federal, state …
Alluvial Geochronology And Watershed Analysis Of The Golo River, Northeastern Corsica, France, Emilee M. Skyles
Alluvial Geochronology And Watershed Analysis Of The Golo River, Northeastern Corsica, France, Emilee M. Skyles
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Golo River in Corsica, France, is a short, steep river (~95 km, 2706 m relief) in the Western Mediterranean with formerly glaciated headwaters. The small size and location of the Golo River make this system ideal for observing the influence of climate and sea-level change on river dynamics over the 100,000 years. A rapidly advancing dating technique, optically stimulated luminescence, was utilized to determine the timing of these river deposits on the coastal plain in order to frame them in the context of previous glacial and interglacial episodes. Climate fluctuations in the headwaters supplied the vast majority of sediment …
Numerical Algorithm For Analysis Of N-Ary Subdivision Schemes, Ghulam Mustafa, Muhammad Zahid
Numerical Algorithm For Analysis Of N-Ary Subdivision Schemes, Ghulam Mustafa, Muhammad Zahid
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The analysis for continuity of limit curves generated by m-point n-ary subdivision schemes is presented for m, n ≥ 2. The analysis is based on the study of corresponding differences and divided difference schemes. A numerical algorithm is introduced which computes the continuity and higher order divided differences of schemes in an efficient way. It is also free from polynomial factorization and division unlike the well-known Laurent polynomial algorithm for analysis of schemes which depends on polynomial algebraic operations. It only depends on the arithmetic operations.

Origin And Provenance Of Spherules And Magnetic Grains At The Younger Dryas Boundary, Yingzhe Wu, Mukul Sharma, Malcom A. Lecompte, Mark N. Demitroff, Joshua D. Landis
Dartmouth Scholarship
One or more bolide impacts are hypothesized to have triggered the Younger Dryas cooling at ∼12.9 ka. In support of this hypothesis, varying peak abundances of magnetic grains with iridium and magnetic microspherules have been reported at the Younger Dryas boundary (YDB). We show that bulk sediment and/or magnetic grains/microspherules collected from the YDB sites in Arizona, Michigan, New Mexico, New Jersey, and Ohio have (187)Os/(188)Os ratios ≥1.0, similar to average upper continental crust (= 1.3), indicating a terrestrial origin of osmium (Os) in these samples. In contrast, bulk sediments from YDB sites in Belgium and Pennsylvania exhibit (187)Os/(188)Os ratios <<1.0 and at face value suggest mixing with extraterrestrial Os with (187)Os/(188)Os of ∼0.13. However, the Os concentration in bulk sample and magnetic grains from Belgium is 2.8 pg/g and 15 pg/g, respectively, much lower than that in average upper continental crust (=31 pg/g), indicating no meteoritic contribution. The YDB site in Pennsylvania is remarkable in yielding 2- to 5-mm diameter spherules containing minerals such as suessite (Fe-Ni silicide) that form at temperatures in excess of 2000 °C. Gross texture, mineralogy, and age of the spherules appear consistent with their formation as ejecta from an impact 12.9 ka ago. The (187)Os/(188)Os ratios of the spherules and their leachates are often low, but Os in these objects is likely terrestrially derived. The rare earth element patterns and Sr and Nd isotopes of the spherules indicate that their source lies in 1.5-Ga Quebecia terrain in the Grenville Province of northeastern North America.
The Boundedness Of Hausdorff Operators On Function Spaces, Xiaoying Lin
The Boundedness Of Hausdorff Operators On Function Spaces, Xiaoying Lin
Theses and Dissertations
For a fixed kernel function $\Phi$, the one dimensional Hausdorff operator is defined in the integral form by
\[
\hphi (f)(x)=\int_{0}^{\infty}\frac{\Phi(t)}{t}f(\frac{x}{t})\dt.
\]
By the Minkowski inequality, it is easy to check that the Hausdorff operator is bounded on the Lebesgue spaces $L^{p}$ when $p\geq 1$, with some size condition assumed on the kernel functions $\Phi$. However, people discovered that the above boundedness property is quite different on the Hardy space $H^{p}$ when $0
In this thesis, we first study the boundedness of $\hphi$ on the Hardy space $H^{1}$, and on the local Hardy space $h^{1}(\bbR)$. Our work shows that for …
Study Of Feasability For Phase Difference Extraction Using Software Defined Radio In Location Analysis, Paul Miller
Study Of Feasability For Phase Difference Extraction Using Software Defined Radio In Location Analysis, Paul Miller
Masters Theses
Here is a method for using the phase of an HF radio signal for use in location analysis. This computation is implemented in a software defined radio processing block in the GNU Radio environment. The signals analyzed are received by an Ettus Research USRP SDR. We created a phase analysis system called WMU Rootsync, which compares the roots of a received signal to the roots of a generated reference signal for the phase analysis. This research describes a prototype method for phase analysis only. Future projects may use these ideas differently than presented here. We intend for future projects to …
Doing Discourse Analysis, Gordon R. Waitt
Doing Discourse Analysis, Gordon R. Waitt
Gordon Waitt
My hope in writing this chapter is to generate enthusiasm for geographical research employing discourse analysis. My intention is to provide some advice on doing discourse analysis to facilitale the design of research. I first outline why some geographers have been inspired by this approach. I suggest how Foucauldian discourse analysis is a break from other critical methods applied to textual analysis, including content analysis, semiology, and iconography. The theoretical underpinnings of the method provided by Michel Foucault, a French poststructuralist philosopher, is a key source of difference. I therefore condense Michel Foucault's contribution to discourse analysis by sketching out …

First, by using of the conventional Rowell analysis, we demonstrated that the addition of nano BN particles can effectively eliminate MgO and pores in MgB2 resulting in a very high density and good connectivity of BN-doped MgB2. Then, another method—low-frequency dielectric impedance analysis—was introduced to characterize the properties of the grain boundaries of MgB2. A comparative impedance study was performed in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 100 MHz on pure and nano BN-doped MgB2. The study revealed some following interesting results: (1) a dielectric resonance around frequency of 108 in both samples was observed, which was argued to …

Fault Seal Analysis For Co2 Storage: Fault Zone Architecture, Fault Permeability, And Fluid Migration Pathways In Exposed Analogs In Southeastern Utah, David J. Richey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) primarily resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels can be captured and stored by injection into underground porous sandstone reservoirs. This process has been proposed as a method for reducing greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming. Two of the major risks associated with this technology include: 1) upwards migration and leakage of injected fluids along natural fault and fracture networks, and 2) possible induced seismicity (earthquakes) resulting from increasing the pressure in reservoirs and along existing faults.
We use geologic field mapping, petrographic analysis, characterization of the fault zone, analysis of altered …
Simulation And Analysis Of Insider Attacks, Christopher Blake Clark
Simulation And Analysis Of Insider Attacks, Christopher Blake Clark
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
An insider is an individual (usually an employee, contractor, or business partner) that has been trusted with access to an organization's systems and sensitive data for legitimate purposes. A malicious insider abuses this access in a way that negatively impacts the company, such as exposing, modifying, or defacing software and data.
Many algorithms, strategies, and analyses have been developed with the intent of detecting and/or preventing insider attacks. In an academic setting, these tools and approaches show great promise. To be sure of their effectiveness, however, these analyses need to be tested. While real data is available on insider attacks …
Integrating, Developing, And Testing Methods To Generate More Cohesive Approaches To Biogeographic Inference, Mallory Elizabeth Eckstut
Integrating, Developing, And Testing Methods To Generate More Cohesive Approaches To Biogeographic Inference, Mallory Elizabeth Eckstut
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
As a fundamental component of the developing discipline of conservation biogeography, broadscale analyses of biotic assembly and disassembly across multiple temporal and spatial scales provide an enhanced understanding of how geologic transformations and climate oscillations have shaped extant patterns of biodiversity. As with any scientific field, there are limitations in the case of biogeographic historical reconstructions. Historical reconstructions are only as robust as the theoretical underpinnings of the methods of reconstruction (including data collection, quality, analysis, and interpretation). Nevertheless, historical reconstructions of species distributions can help inform our understanding of how species respond to environmental change.

A Weak Groethendieck Compactness Principle For Infinite Dimensional Banach Spaces, Kaitlin Bjorkman
A Weak Groethendieck Compactness Principle For Infinite Dimensional Banach Spaces, Kaitlin Bjorkman
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this thesis is to give an exposition of the following recent result of Freeman, Lennard, Odell, Turett and Randrianantoanina. A Banach space has the Schur property if and only if every weakly compact set is contained in the closed convex hull of a weakly null sequence. This result complements an old result of Grothendieck (now called the Grothendieck Compactness Principle) stating that every norm compact subset of a Banach space is contained in the closed convex hull of a norm null sequence. We include many of the relevant definitions and preliminary results which are required in the …

A textile based fluid handling system has been developed for sample collection and transport. Sodium, conductivity and pH sensors have also been developed. This paper details the integration and testing of these sensors. Results show that the developed system can collect and analyze sweat in real time during exercise and transmit this data wirelessly to a remote …
Texture Analysis Using Partially Ordered Markov Models, Jennifer Davidson, Ashit Talukder, Noel A. Cressie
Texture Analysis Using Partially Ordered Markov Models, Jennifer Davidson, Ashit Talukder, Noel A. Cressie
Professor Noel Cressie
Texture is a phenomenon in image data that continues to receive wide-spread interest due to its broad range of applications. The paper focuses on but one of several ways to model textures, namely, the class of stochastic texture models. the authors introduce a new spatial stochastic model called partially ordered Markov models, or POMMs. They show how POMMs are a generalization of a class of models called Markov mesh models, or MMMs, that allow an explicit closed form of the joint probability, just as do MMMs. While POMMs are a type of Markov random field model (MRF), the general MRFs …
A Spatial Analysis Of Multivariate Output From Regional Climate Models, Stephan Sain, Reinhard Furrer, Noel A. Cressie
A Spatial Analysis Of Multivariate Output From Regional Climate Models, Stephan Sain, Reinhard Furrer, Noel A. Cressie
Professor Noel Cressie
Climate models have become an important tool in the study of climate and climate change, and ensemble experiments consisting of multiple climate-model runs are used in studying and quantifying the uncertainty in climate-model output. However, there are often only a limited number of model runs available for a particular experiment, and one of the statistical challenges is to characterize the distribution of the model output. To that end, we have developed a multivariate hierarchical approach, at the heart of which is a new representation of a multivariate Markov random field. This approach allows for flexible modeling of the multivariate spatial …
A Spatial Analysis Of Variance Applied To Soil-Water Infiltration, C Gotway, Noel A. Cressie
A Spatial Analysis Of Variance Applied To Soil-Water Infiltration, C Gotway, Noel A. Cressie
Professor Noel Cressie
A spatial analysis of variance uses the spatial dependence among the observations to modify the usual interference procedures associated with a statistical linear model. When spatial correlation is present, the usual tests for presence of treatment effects may no longer be valid, and erroneous conclusions may result from assuming that the usual F ratios are F distributed. This is demonstrated using a spatial analysis of soil-water infiltration data. Emphasis is placed on modeling the spatial dependence structure with geostatistical techniques, and this spatial dependence structure is then used to test hypotheses about fixed effects using a nested linear model. -Authors
Bayesian Hierarchical Analysis Of Minefield Data, Noel A. Cressie, Andrew B. Lawson
Bayesian Hierarchical Analysis Of Minefield Data, Noel A. Cressie, Andrew B. Lawson
Professor Noel Cressie
Based on remote sensing of a potential minefield, point locations are identified, some of which may not be mines. The mines and mine-like objects are to be distinguished based on their point patterns, although it must be emphasized that all we see is the superposition of their locations. In this paper, we construct a hierarchical spatial point-process model that accounts for the different patterns of mines and mine-like objects and uses posterior analysis to distinguish between them. Our Bayesian approach is applied to COBRA image data obtained from the NSWC Coastal Systems Station, Dahlgren Division, Panama City, Florida. 2003 Copyright …

A Robust-Resistant Spatial Analysis Of Soil Water Infiltration., Noel A. Cressie, R Horton
Professor Noel Cressie
Concentrates on estimating the spatial correlations between soil water infiltration observations, with special emphasis on resistant methods to remove nonstationarity. After this removal, robust semivariogram estimators are used to examine the spatial dependencies for various tillage treatments. There is some indication that infiltration characteristics inherit different types of spatial dependency, depending on the tillage treatment applied.-from Authors

Lipschitz Estimates On Weakly Pseudoconvex Domains, Daniel Smitas
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Given an arbitrary pseudoconvex domain D in C^n, in general, one cannot construct an integral kernel using holomorphic support functions. Here we consider an integral kernel, defined for weakly pseudoconvex domains, that while not holomorphic, does display related properties. We examine the transform defined by this kernel, Tf, on the Holder spaces we inspect how tangential vector fields apply to Tf.

Boron–nitrogen containing compounds with high hydrogen contents as represented by ammonia borane (NH3BH3) have recently attracted intense interest for potential hydrogen storage applications. One such compound is [(NH3)2BH2]B3H8 with a capacity of 18.2 wt% H. Two safe and efficient synthetic routes to [(NH3)2BH2]B3H8 have been developed for the first time since it was discovered 50 years ago. The new synthetic routes avoid a dangerous starting chemical, tetraborane (B4H10), and afford a high yield. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals N–Hd+…Hd2–B dihydrogen interactions in the [(NH3)2BH2]B3H8?18- crown-6 adduct. Extended strong dihydrogen bonds were observed in pure [(NH3)2BH2]B3H8 through crystal structure solution …

One of the important problems studied in the area of travel behavior analysis is travel mode choice which is one of the four crucial steps in transportation demand estimation for urban planning. State of the art models in travel demand modelling can be classified as trip based; tour based; and activity based. In trip based approach, each individual trips is modelled as independent and isolated trips i.e. no connections between different trips. In tour based approach, trips that start and end from the same location (home, work, etc) and trips within a tour are dependent on each other. In past …
Robotic Swarming Without Inter-Agent Communication, Daniel Jonathan Standish
Robotic Swarming Without Inter-Agent Communication, Daniel Jonathan Standish
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Many physical and algorithmic swarms utilize inter-agent communication to achieve advanced swarming behaviors. These swarms are inspired by biological swarms that can be seen throughout nature and include bee swarms, ant colonies, fish schools, and bird flocks. These biological swarms do not utilize inter-agent communication like their physical and algorithmic counterparts. Instead, organisms in nature rely on a local awareness of other swarm members that facilitates proper swarm motion and behavior. This research aims to pursue an effective swarm algorithm using only line-of-sight proximity information and no inter-agent communication. It is expected that the swarm performance will be lower than …

Location And Tracking Of Mobile Devices: Überveillance Stalks The Streets, Katina Michael, Roger Clarke
Professor Katina Michael
During the last decade, location-tracking and monitoring applications have proliferated, in mobile cellular and wireless data networks, and through self-reporting by applications running in smartphones that are equipped with onboard global positioning system (GPS) chipsets. It is now possible to locate a smartphone-user's location not merely to a cell, but to a small area within it. Innovators have been quick to capitalise on these location-based technologies for commercial purposes, and have gained access to a great deal of sensitive personal data in the process. In addition, law enforcement utilise these technologies, can do so inexpensively and hence can track many …
