Dissertations

An integrated (space-borne and land-based gravity, aeromagnetic, GIS, and remote sensing) approach was developed, tested, and applied to investigate the following on regional scales (Africa) or local scales (El Qaa Plain, Sinai): (1) assess the capability of GRACE data (04/2002 to 08/2011) for monitoring elements of hydrologic systems on the sub-basin level (Task 1); (2) address the nature and the controlling factors (e.g., climatic and/or human pressure-related) affecting the inter-annual GRACE-derived Terrestrial Water Storage (TWS) trends over a large suite of hydrologic systems and domains in (Africa) (Task 2); and (3) identify the structural, geologic and hydrologic settings as well …

Experimental Investigation Of The Vibration Characteristics Of A Magnetorheological Elastomer Sandwich Beam Under Non-Homogeneous Small Magnetic Fields, Guoliang Hu, Miao Guo, Weihua Li, Haiping Du, Gursel Alici Nov 2012

Experimental Investigation Of The Vibration Characteristics Of A Magnetorheological Elastomer Sandwich Beam Under Non-Homogeneous Small Magnetic Fields, Guoliang Hu, Miao Guo, Weihua Li, Haiping Du, Gursel Alici

Dr Haiping Du

In this study, a magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) was manufactured and tested, and a MRE sandwich beam was also fabricated from a MRE between two thin aluminum layers. An experimental test rig was set up to investigate the vibration response of the MRE sandwich beam under a non-homogeneous magnetic field. The experimental results show that the first natural frequency of the MRE sandwich beam decreased as the magnetic field applied to the beam was moved from the clamped end of the beam to the free end of the beam. It is also noted that the MRE sandwich beam had the capability …

Inductive Metal Identification, Paul Maggi Jun 2012

Inductive Metal Identification, Paul Maggi

Electrical Engineering

This project focuses on creating a device to differentiate between various types of metals via magnetic induction. Magnetic induction is used because it is both non-optical and non-contact. It achieves this by generating a varying magnetic field, which induces eddy currents in the metal. These eddy currents produce small disturbances in the surrounding magnetic field, which can be sensed with Hall Effect Sensors (HES). The primary challenge in this project was generating a sufficiently strong magnetic field to detectable disturbances. In order to achieve better results, a stronger magnetic field must be used as well as more sensitive Hall Effect …

Superspin Glass Behaviour Of Interacting Ferromagnetic Nanoparticles In Discontinuous Magnetic Multilayers, Christian Binek Mar 2012

Superspin Glass Behaviour Of Interacting Ferromagnetic Nanoparticles In Discontinuous Magnetic Multilayers, Christian Binek

Christian Binek

Discontinuous magnetic multilayers [Co80Fe20(t)/Al2O3(3nm)]10 with t = 0.9 and 1.0nm are studied by SQUID magnetometry and ac susceptibility. Owing to dipolar interaction the superparamagnetic cluster systems undergo collective glass-like freezing upon cooling. While both samples exhibit very similar glass temperatures Tg » 45 K and critical exponents zn » 10 and g » 1.4 as obtained from the temperature dependencies of the relaxation time, t, and the nonlinear susceptibility, c3, dynamical scaling reveals different critical exponents, b(0.9nm) »1.0 and b(1.0nm) » 0.6, respectively.

Light Diffraction By Field-Induced Non-Periodic Magnetic Domain Structures In Fecl2, Christian Binek Mar 2012

Light Diffraction By Field-Induced Non-Periodic Magnetic Domain Structures In Fecl2, Christian Binek

Christian Binek

The magnetic-field-induced mixed phase of the meta magnet FeCl2 gives rise to reduced transmittivity of circularly polarized light. Within the framework of the diffraction theory of thin random magnetic phase gratings and the assumption of field-dependent refractive indices of the antiferromagnetic domains the field dependence of the transmission is perfectly modeled.

Random-Field Critical And Spin-Flop Behavior Of The Anisotropic Heisenberg Antiferromagnet Fe0.9mg0.1br2 In Axial Magnetic Fields, Christian Binek Mar 2012

Random-Field Critical And Spin-Flop Behavior Of The Anisotropic Heisenberg Antiferromagnet Fe0.9mg0.1br2 In Axial Magnetic Fields, Christian Binek

Christian Binek

Faraday optical measurements on the dilute hexagonal antiferromagnet Fe0.85Mg0.15Br2 in an external axial field reveal a spin-flop phase line ending at a multicritical point (Tm=8.1 K, Hm=1050 kA m-1) and crossover from random-exchange to random-field Ising criticality with an exponent Phi =1.40+or-0.04 in the vicinity of TN=11.1 K. Cusp-like behaviour of the specific heat at TN is discussed in view of recent Monte Carlo results.

Magnetic And Superconducting Properties Of Spin-Fluctuation-Limited Superconducting Nanoscale Vnx, R Zeng, J Liu, G Du, W. X. Li, J Wang, J Horvat, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

"VNx nanoparticles and nanowires have been prepared by nitrifying V2O5 nanoparticles (NP) and nanowires (NW). The V2O5 NP and NW were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. Magnetic susceptibility (chi) and magnetization measurements showed long range superconducting ordering (LRSO) at the temperature of 5.8 K for NW, but there was no observation of LRSO (at least down to 2 K) for the NP sample, which is a much lower temperature than for the corresponding bulk, while both NP and NW showed the absence of long range magnetic ordering, at least down to 2 K. However, the chi data showed that …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

High-angle neutron diffraction was used to directly reveal the atomic-scale magnetic structure of a single-crystalline BiMn 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 thin film deposited on a SrTiO 3 (001) substrate. The BiMn 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 phase exhibits distinctive magnetic properties that differentiate it from both parent compounds: BiFeO 3 and BiMnO 3. A transition to long-range G-type antiferromagnetism was observed below 120 K with a (1 2 1 2 1 2) propagation vector. A weak ferromagnetic behavior was measured at low temperature by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry. There is no indication of the spin cycloid, known …

Magnetic Properties And Microstructures Of Iron Oxide@Mesoporous Silica Core-Shell Composite For Applications In Magnetic Dye Separation, Weichang Hao, Yang Xi, Jingwei Hu, Tianmin Wang, Yi Du, X L. Wang

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

"In this report, hollow mesoporous silica (HMS) and iron oxide-hollow mesoporous silica (FexOy@HMS) core-shell composite were prepared by a one-step facile fabrication method. Transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, and vibrating sample magnetometer were used to characterize the morphology, microstructure, and magnetic properties of the HMS and core-shell composite. The magnetic separability of FexOy@HMS core-shell composite was tested in Rhodamine B (Rh. B) dye solution. The results indicate that the core-shell composite can absorb Rh. B dyes molecules effectively up to 90.1%. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3670049]"
