Simulation Study Of Estimation And Inference In Factor Analysis: Normal And Non-Normal Noise Distributions, Ping Zhang May 2005

Simulation Study Of Estimation And Inference In Factor Analysis: Normal And Non-Normal Noise Distributions, Ping Zhang

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Objective: To study the estimation and inference m factor analyses when the data have normal or non-normal noise distributions.

Methods: Population data were created in package R with a specified number of factors, factor structure and observable variables with known loadings. Then, repeated simple random samples (SRS's) were taken from the population, independently. The maximum likelihood method with varimax rotation was used to perform factor analysis and inference on each sampled dataset. Factor loadings were estimated to determine if the estimation of the loadings was (approximately) unbiased and/or efficient for each specified population and chi-square x2-statistics were obtained to test …

Wavelet Analysis Of Magnetometer Data, Inga Maslova May 2005

Wavelet Analysis Of Magnetometer Data, Inga Maslova

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The wavelet analysis of the ground-based magnetograms' records is performed in this project. We explore the records from low, medium and high latitude stations during a calm period and a stormy one. Different methods for detecting and estimating the tail index of heavy-tailed distributions are compared. A detailed analysis of the properties of the distributions of the discrete wavelet transform coefficients of magnetometer data is presented. Conclusions on the tail index estimation techniques and the distribution of the discrete wavelet transform coefficients are made.

Security Analysis Of Michael: The Ieee 802.11i Message Integrity Code, Jianyong Huang, Jennifer Seberry, Willy Susilo, Martin W. Bunder Jan 2005

Security Analysis Of Michael: The Ieee 802.11i Message Integrity Code, Jianyong Huang, Jennifer Seberry, Willy Susilo, Martin W. Bunder

The latest IEEE 802.11i uses a keyed hash function, called Michael, as the message integrity code. This paper describes some properties and weaknesses of Michael. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for finding collisions of Michael. Our observation reveals that the collision status of Michael only depends on the second last block message and the output of the block function in the third last round. We show that Michael is not collision-free by providing a method to find collisions of this keyed hash function. Moreover, we develop a method to find fixed points of Michael. If the output …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Use Of The Web For Destination Marketing By Regional Tourism Organisations In Chile And The Asia Pacific, Lois Burgess, Joan Cooper, Narciso Cerpa, Jason P. Sargent Jan 2005

A Comparative Analysis Of The Use Of The Web For Destination Marketing By Regional Tourism Organisations In Chile And The Asia Pacific, Lois Burgess, Joan Cooper, Narciso Cerpa, Jason P. Sargent

With reports of travel purchases and reservations being one of the fastest growing segments of the Internet community (eMarketer, 2002), it is no surprise that the number of tourism operators on the Web has increased considerably over the past few years. In recent years, Australia and Chile have developed strong social and economic ties. With the introduction of direct air links between Australia and Chile in July 2002, the number of Australian business people and tourists visiting Chile and neighbouring countries increased significantly. This isn’t surprising considering approximately 35,000 Chileans live in Australia (DFAT, 2005). This paper presents the results …

The Analysis Of Crop Cultivar Breeding And Evaluation Trials: An Overview Of Current Mixed Model Approaches, A B. Smith, Brian R. Cullis, R Thompson Jan 2005

The Analysis Of Crop Cultivar Breeding And Evaluation Trials: An Overview Of Current Mixed Model Approaches, A B. Smith, Brian R. Cullis, R Thompson

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

The analysis of series of crop variety trials has a long history with the earliest approaches being based on ANOVA methods. Kempton (1984) discussed the inadequacies of this approach, summarized the alternatives available at that time and noted that all of these approaches could be classified as multiplicative models. Recently, mixed model approaches have become popular for the analysis of series of variety trials. There are numerous reasons for their use, including the ease with which incomplete data (not all varieties in all trials) can be handled and the ability to appropriately model within-trial error variation. Currently, the most common …

Doing Discourse Analysis, Gordon R. Waitt Jan 2005

Doing Discourse Analysis, Gordon R. Waitt

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

My hope in writing this chapter is to generate enthusiasm for geographical research employing discourse analysis. My intention is to provide some advice on doing discourse analysis to facilitale the design of research. I first outline why some geographers have been inspired by this approach. I suggest how Foucauldian discourse analysis is a break from other critical methods applied to textual analysis, including content analysis, semiology, and iconography. The theoretical underpinnings of the method provided by Michel Foucault, a French poststructuralist philosopher, is a key source of difference. I therefore condense Michel Foucault's contribution to discourse analysis by sketching out …

Confirmation Of The Structure Of Oxystemokerrin By Single Crystal X-Ray Structural Analysis And A Proposed Biosynthesis, Pitchaya Mungkornasawakul, Hayden Matthews, Alison T. Ung, Stephen G. Pyne, Araya Jatisatienr, Wilford Lie, Brian W. Skelton, Allan H. White Jan 2005

Confirmation Of The Structure Of Oxystemokerrin By Single Crystal X-Ray Structural Analysis And A Proposed Biosynthesis, Pitchaya Mungkornasawakul, Hayden Matthews, Alison T. Ung, Stephen G. Pyne, Araya Jatisatienr, Wilford Lie, Brian W. Skelton, Allan H. White

The crystal structure of the pentacyclic Stemona alkaloid oxystemokerrin (2), isolated from the roots of Stemona kerrii, is reported, confirming the structure proposed for this compound in a contemporaneous spectroscopic study. This compound is a diastereomer of stemocurtisinol (3), whose structure we have recently reported from S. curtisii, also confirmed by a single-crystal X-ray study. These alkaloids have opposite configurations at C-4 and C-19. A possible biosynthetic pathway for the biosynthesis of 2 and 3 is proposed.

A quasi-static equivalent circuit model of a dumbbell shaped defected ground structure (DGS) is developed. The equivalent circuit model is derived from the equivalent inductance and capacitance developed due to the perturbed returned current path on the ground and the narrow gap, respectively. The theory is validated against the commercial full-wave solver CST Microwave Studio. Finally, the calculated results are compared with the measured results. Good agreement between the theory, the commercially available numerical analyses and the experimental results validates the developed theoretical model.
