Wildfire Exposure To Critical Habitat Of Endangered And Threatened Species In California, Kristin Butcher May 2019

Wildfire Exposure To Critical Habitat Of Endangered And Threatened Species In California, Kristin Butcher

Master's Theses

Researchers, fire ecologists and wildlife managers are concerned about impact to endangered and threatened species and their critical habitat due to the projected increase in future wildfires. Wildfires have been studied in California for the last six decades and have been increasing at an alarming rate since the 1980’s. In this study, I use the 2018 spatial dataset for critical habitat of federally endangered and threatened species located in the state boundaries of California and compare it to a spatial dataset for wildfires that have occurred over the span of 32 years (1984 to 2016). Trends are derived from spatial …

Utilizing Compost For Carbon Sequestration: A Strategy For Climate Goals And Land Use Management, Sarah R. Koplowicz May 2019

Utilizing Compost For Carbon Sequestration: A Strategy For Climate Goals And Land Use Management, Sarah R. Koplowicz

Master's Projects and Capstones

In recent years, research has been developed for the use of compost combined with managed grazing (and manure) on grasslands (DeLonge et al, 2013) or rangelands, resulting in carbon sequestration from the atmosphere back into soil at a relatively high rate . The Marin Carbon Project (MCP) was established as a collaborative effort to analyze the potential effects of this technique for greenhouse gas mitigation. The MCP established that combining compost applications with managed livestock grazing benefits the soil health and native plant community, while simultaneously enabling carbon sequestration through the mechanisms of plant production and microbial activity. Additional recent …

Management Recommendations For Ecological Restoration On The Little River Parcel, Maya Sady Partain, Garitt Mathews Jan 2019

Management Recommendations For Ecological Restoration On The Little River Parcel, Maya Sady Partain, Garitt Mathews

Environmental Science & Management Senior Capstones

Ecological restoration is an important aspect of land management. Data collection and ongoing monitoring help inform restoration decisions and determine their effectiveness. In this project, we followed a monitoring protocol provided by the Trinidad Coastal Land Trust to assess the 2019 status of their Little River parcel, a fifteen-acre area near the mouth of Little River in Trinidad, California. We performed a site analysis of invasive plant species and recorded their extent and location, as well as noting other observations of the ecology, topography, and biology of the site. After making our observations, we recommended land management methods woven together …

Recommendations For Wildfire Recovery Planning For The City Of Arcata, Samuel Griffard, Kiara Cuerpo-Hadsall, Olivia G. Barone, Conrad Tanyi, Emily Pearson, Wyatt Wilson Jan 2019

Recommendations For Wildfire Recovery Planning For The City Of Arcata, Samuel Griffard, Kiara Cuerpo-Hadsall, Olivia G. Barone, Conrad Tanyi, Emily Pearson, Wyatt Wilson

Environmental Science & Management Senior Capstones

Western landscapes are experiencing an increased scale and intensity of wildfires, due in part to climate change, fire suppression, and an expanding wildland-urban interface. The damage to human lives and property caused by wildfires has prompted all levels of government to galvanize planning efforts to better respond to and recover from wildfire. This report summarizes the need for effective wildfire recovery planning for the City of Arcata, California. The city is currently working on its Hazard Mitigation Plan to be eligible for funding under FEMA hazard mitigation grant programs. This report seeks to inform the city by highlighting the importance …

A Diatom Proxy For Seasonality Over The Last Three Millennia At June Lake, Eastern Sierra Nevada (Ca), Laura Caitlin Streib Jan 2019

A Diatom Proxy For Seasonality Over The Last Three Millennia At June Lake, Eastern Sierra Nevada (Ca), Laura Caitlin Streib

Theses and Dissertations--Earth and Environmental Sciences

The Sierra Nevada snowpack is vital to the water supply of California, the world’s sixth largest economy. Though tree ring and instrumental records show the dramatic influence of environmental change on California’s hydroclimate over the last millennium, few proxy archives assess winter precipitation variability farther back in time. Here, we use diatoms from a ~3,200 yr. old sediment core to reconstruct the paleolimnology of June Lake, a hydrologically closed glacial lake in the eastern Sierra Nevada. We test the hypothesis that limnologic and climatic changes control diatom assemblages at June Lake. Fossil diatom assemblages from June Lake sediments chiefly consist …

An Investigation Of Electronic Protected Health Information (E-Phi) Privacy Policy Legislation In California For Seniors Using In-Home Health Monitoring Systems, Robert Lee Saganich Jan 2019

An Investigation Of Electronic Protected Health Information (E-Phi) Privacy Policy Legislation In California For Seniors Using In-Home Health Monitoring Systems, Robert Lee Saganich

CCE Theses and Dissertations

This study examined privacy legislation in California to identify those electronic Protected Health Information (e-PHI) privacy policies that are suited to seniors using in-home health monitoring systems. Personal freedom and independence are essential to a person's physical and mental health, and mobile technology applications provide a convenient and economical method for monitoring personal health. Many of these apps are written by third parties, however, which poses serious risks to patient privacy. Current federal regulations only cover applications and systems developed for use by covered entities and their business partners. As a result, the responsibility for protecting the privacy of the …
