An Introduction To Generalized Entropy And Some Quantum Applications, Paul Bracken

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The concept of generalized entropy is introduced and some of its properties are studied. Irreversible time evolution can be generated by a non-Hermitian superoperator on the states of the system. The case when irreversibility comes about from embedding the system in a thermal reservoir is looked at. The time evolution is found compatible both with equilibrium thermodynamics and entropy production near the final state. Some examples are presented as well as a longer introduction as to how this might play a role in the black hole information loss paradox.

Exploring economically efficient electrocatalysts with robust bifunctional oxygen conversion catalytic activity and designing appropriate structures are essential to realize ideal zinc-Air batteries with high energy density and long lifespan. Two-dimensional metallic state Co3FeN nanosheets with a holey-structured architecture are designed and shown to exhibit enhanced catalytic properties owing to the complete exposure of the atoms in the large lateral surfaces and in the edges of pore areas, together with the lowest OH∗ adsorption energy on exposed surfaces due to bimetallic synergistic effects. Mn-doped ZnO nanocrystals are synthesized by a wet chemical route and treated in H2/Ar atmosphere with different H2/Ar ratios. It is found that hydrogen annealing could change the coordination environment of Mn in ZnO lattice and manipulate the magnetic properties of Mn-doped ZnO. Mn ions initially enter into interstitial sites and a Mn3+O6 octahedral coordination is produced in the prepared Mn-doped ZnO sample, in which the nearest neighbor Mn3+ and O2 ions could form a Mn3+-O2--Mn3+ complex. After H2 annealing, interstitial Mn ions can substitute for Zn to generate the Mn2+O4 tetrahedral coordination in the nanocrystals, in which neighboring Mn2+ …

The variation of topological defect density and hexatic order parameter were measured over a range of micro-Tesla fields in a 2-D superconducting vortex glass. This was achieved through scanning SQUID microscopy of the vortex distribution in YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films under field-cooled conditions. It was discovered that, although the defect density decreased for increasing magnetic fields, giving the impression of a more lattice-like vortex distribution, the hexatic order parameter also decreased, showing that the distribution was less orientationally ordered.

It is shown that a multilayer comprised of alternating thin superconducting and insulating layers on a thick substrate can fully screen the applied magnetic field exceeding the superheating fields Hsof both the superconducting layers and the substrate, the maximum Meissner field is achieved at an optimum multilayer thickness. For instance, a dirty layer of thickness ~0.1μm at the Nb surface could increase Hs similar or equal to 240 mT of a clean Nb up to Hs similar or equal to 290 mT. The " multilayer silicene" films were grown on Ag(111), with increasing thickness above 30 monolayers (ML). Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) observations suggest that the " multilayer silicene" is indeed a bulk-like Si(111) film with a (√ 3 x √ 3)R30° honeycomb superstructure on surface. The possibility for formation of Si(111)(√ 3 x √ 3)R30°-Ag reconstruction on the surface can be distinctively ruled out by peeling off the surface layer with the STM tip. On this surface, delocalized surface state as well as linear energy-momentum dispersion was observed from quasiparticle interference patterns. Although great attention has been paid to wearable electronic devices in recent years, flexible lightweight batteries or supercapacitors with high performance are still not readily available due to the limitations of the flexible electrode inventory. In this work, highly flexible, bendable and conductive rGO-PEDOT/PSS films were prepared using a simple bar-coating method. The assembled device using rGO-PEDOT/PSS electrode could be bent and rolled up without any decrease in electrochemical performance. A β-NMR study was performed on a Sr2RuO4 crystal in the metallic state using a beam of spin-polarized 8Li+ implanted at a mean depth of 90 nm. The 8Li+ spin-lattice relaxation rate is strongly influenced by the onset of incommensurate spin fluctuations. The nuclear relaxation rate can be explained using previously published bulk 17O NMR and inelastic neutron spectroscopy measurements of the dynamic magnetic susceptibility to model the hyperfine coupling. A well-resolved quadrupolar-split NMR for 8Li+ implies a static stopping position in an interstitial site. The 8Li+ Knight shift is highly sensitive to the anisotropic static susceptibility.

Fiber and yarn supercapacitors that are elastomerically deformable without performance loss are sought for such applications as power sources for wearable electronics, micro-devices, and implantable medical devices. Previously reported yarn and fiber supercapacitors are expensive to fabricate, difficult to upscale, or non-stretchable, which limits possible use. The elastomeric electrodes of the present solid-state supercapacitors are made by using giant inserted twist to coil a nylon sewing thread that is helically wrapped with a carbon nanotube sheet, and then electrochemically depositing pseudocapacitive MnO2 nanofibers. Measurement Of Double-Polarization Asymmetries In The Quasielastic ³→He (→E, E' D) Process, M. Mihovilovic, G. Jin, M. Canan, S. Golge, R. Schiavilla, Jefferson Lab Hall A. Collaboration

We present a precise measurement of double-polarization asymmetries in the ³→He (→e, e' d) reaction. This particular process is a uniquely sensitive probe of hadron dynamics in 3He and the structure of the underlying electromagnetic currents. The measurements have been performed in and around quasielastic kinematics at Q2 = 0.25(GeV/c)2 for missing momenta up to 270 MeV/c. The asymmetries are in fair agreement with the state-of-the-art calculations in terms of their functional dependencies on pm and ω, but are systematically offset. Beyond the region of the quasielastic peak, the discrepancies become even more pronounced. Thus, our …

Epitaxial silicene, which is one single layer of silicon atoms packed in a honeycomb structure, demonstrates a strong interaction with the substrate that dramatically affects its electronic structure. The role of electronic coupling in the chemical reactivity between the silicene and the substrate is still unclear so far, which is of great importance for functionalization of silicene layers. Here, we report the reconstructions and hybridized electronic structures of epitaxial 4 3 4 silicene on Ag(111), which are revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Paper like flexible electrode becomes one of the most important research objects recently in request of the fast expanding market of portable electronics. Flexible solid state supercapacitors are shortlisted as one of the most promising energy devices to power electronics with medium to high power density requirements. To study the influence of solid state electrolyte coating layers on the performance of cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries in combination with organic liquid electrolyte, LiNbO3 coated Li1.08Mn1.92O4 cathode materials were synthesized by using a facile solid-state reaction method. The 0.06LiNbO3-0.97Li1.08Mn1.92O4 cathode exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 125 mAh g-1, retaining a capacity of 119 mAh g-1, at 25 oC, while at 55 oC, it exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 130 mAh g-1, retaining a capacity of 111 mAh g-1, both at a current density of 0.5 C (where 1 C is 148 mAh g-1). In an effort to broaden the search for high-capacity hydrogen storage materials, three triborane compounds, NaB3H8, NH 3B3H7, and NH4B3H 8, were studied. In addition to hydrogen, thermal decomposition also releases volatile boranes, and the relative amounts and species depend on the cations (Na+, NH4 +) and the Lewis base (NH 3). Static-sample hydrogen NMR is used to probe molecular motion in the three solids. In each case, the line width decreases from low temperatures to room temperature in accordance with a model of isotropic or nearly isotropic reorientations. Background: Disulfide bonds play an important role in protein folding and structure stability. Accurately predicting disulfide bonds from protein sequences is important for modeling the structural and functional characteristics of many proteins.

Methods: In this work, we introduce an approach of enhancing disulfide bonding prediction accuracy by taking advantage of context-based features. We firstly derive the first-order and second-order mean-force potentials according to the amino acid environment around the cysteine residues from large number of cysteine samples. Air Quality Impacts from Oil and Gas Development (January 27)

Oil and gas development and hydraulic fracturing have received enormous attention over the past few years, and most of that attention has focused on the potential impacts of such development on water quality. However, the potential impacts on air quality from oil and gas development have received far less public and media attention and discussion. This two-hour program will assess the current scientific knowledge, regulatory requirements and policies regarding the impacts on air quality from oil and gas development and will address current initiatives at the state and national levels to further regulate and control those impacts.

Low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is exploited to study directly the atomic and electronic structures of single Fe dopants in topological insulator Bi2Se3 thin films. Fe atoms predominantly and isovalently substitute for two distinct Bi sites at the subsurface with charge neutrality. In the vicinity of Fe substitutions, circular depressions in STM topography and sharp rings in spatially resolved conductance map, whose diameters apparently depend on the tunneling conditions, are observed. We show that the phenomena correlate well with the switching between Fe3+ and Fe2+ charge states due to the gate effect of the tunneling tip, as further evidenced by …
