The huge demand for renewable hydrogen produced by water splitting has prompted people to conduct in-depth research on the hydrogen evolution reaction for the development of earth-abundant, non-precious, and multi-functional metal catalysts. Herein, a noble-metal-free ternary composite of TiO2-Cu@C was prepared by electrostatic self-assembly loaded copper nanoparticles and amorphous carbon dots (CDs) on porous TiO2 microrods. The good conductivity of the CDs was beneficial to promoting the charge transfer and separation, generating an enhanced solar-to-hydrogen performance on TiO2-Cu@C. The optimized TiO2-Cu@C reveals a stable and notable hydrogen evolution rate of 3911 μmol g−1h−1, which is 1.6 times that of TiO2-Cu …

Research on development of efficient passivation materials for high performance and stable quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) is highly important. While ZnS is one of the most widely used passivation material in QDSCs, an alternative material based on ZnSe which was deposited on CdS/CdSe/TiO2 photoanode to form a semi-core/shell structure has been found to be more efficient in terms of reducing electron recombination in QDSCs in this work. It has been found that the solar cell efficiency was improved from 1.86% for ZnSe0 (without coating) to 3.99% using 2 layers of ZnSe coating (ZnSe2) deposited by successive ionic …

The use of PbS colloidal quantum dots in photovoltaic devices is very promising because of their simple and low cost production processes and their unique properties, such as bandgap tunability and potential multiple exciton generation. Here we report the synthesis of PbS nanocrystals used for application in solar cells. The sulphur-rich nature of their surface appears to be caused by the exposure to ambient conditions. The use of methanol as medium during the ligand exchange process has a crucial role in the removal of native oleate ligands. Without proper ligand exchange, the unpassivated surface is subject to ambient hydroxylation leading …

Edge-Enriched Graphene Quantum Dots For Enhanced Photo-Luminescence And Supercapacitance, Mahbub Hassan, Enamul Haque, Kakarla Raghava Reddy, Andrew I. Minett, Jun Chen, Vincent G. Gomes Jan 2014

Edge-Enriched Graphene Quantum Dots For Enhanced Photo-Luminescence And Supercapacitance, Mahbub Hassan, Enamul Haque, Kakarla Raghava Reddy, Andrew I. Minett, Jun Chen, Vincent G. Gomes

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with their edge-bound nanometer-size present distinctive properties owing to quantum confinement and edge effects. We report a facile ultrasonic approach with chemical activation using KOH to prepare activated GQDs or aGQDs enriched with both free and bound edges. Compared to GQDs, the aGQDs we synthesized had enhanced BET surface area by a factor of about six, the photoluminescence intensity by about four and half times and electro-capacitance by a factor of about two. Unlike their non-activated counterparts, the aGQDs having enhanced edge states emit enhanced intense blue luminescence and exhibit electrochemical double layer capacitance greater than …

One-Pot Synthesis Of Colloidal Silicon Quantum Dots And Surface Functionalization Via Thiol-Ene Click Chemistry, Xiaoyu Cheng, Richard Gondosiswanto, Simone Ciampi, Peter J. Reece, J Justin Gooding Jan 2012

One-Pot Synthesis Of Colloidal Silicon Quantum Dots And Surface Functionalization Via Thiol-Ene Click Chemistry, Xiaoyu Cheng, Richard Gondosiswanto, Simone Ciampi, Peter J. Reece, J Justin Gooding

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A solution method for preparing surface functionalized colloidal silicon quantum dots (SiQDs) is presented. SiQDs prepared by this method are reasonably monodispersed and can be further functionalized via thiol-ene click reactions to introduce specific functionalities (i.e. -NH2, -COOH, -SO 3 -, alkane, alkene).
