The data inventory developed for the Shoreline Inventory is based on a three tiered shoreline assessment approach. In most cases this assessment characterizes conditions that can be observed from a small boat navigating along the shoreline. The three tiered shoreline assessment approach divides the shorezone into three regions:

1) the immediate riparian zone, evaluated for land use; 2) the bank, evaluated for height, stability, cover and natural protection; and 3) the shoreline, describing the presence of shoreline structures for shore protection and recreational purposes. GPS registered videography was used to collect data on conditions observed in the field.

Validation Of Data Reduction Interactive Pipeline For Forcast On Sofia, Brent C. Nicklas, William T. Reach, Sachindev S. Shenoy Aug 2013

Validation Of Data Reduction Interactive Pipeline For Forcast On Sofia, Brent C. Nicklas, William T. Reach, Sachindev S. Shenoy

STAR Program Research Presentations

The Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) is a heavily modified Boeing 747SP aircraft equipped with 2.5 meter reflecting telescope. Among the suite of instruments onboard is the Faint Object Infrared Camera for the SOFIA Telescope (FORCAST). FORCAST features two cameras for short (5-25 microns) and long (25-40 microns) wavelength detection. Making infrared observations in these wavelengths presents a challenge because the telescope and sky emit background radiation magnitudes brighter than the object of interest. Because of this, the raw FORCAST data must be corrected and reduced. The Data Reduction Interactive Pipeline (DRIP) was developed to process all FORCAST data …

Big Data: Immediate Opportunities And Longer Term Challenges, Jens Pohl, Kym Jason Pohl Jul 2013

Big Data: Immediate Opportunities And Longer Term Challenges, Jens Pohl, Kym Jason Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The transformation of words, locations, and human interactions into digital data forms the basis of trend detection and information extraction opportunities that can be automated with the increasing availability of relatively inexpensive computer storage and processing technology. Trend detection, which focuses on what, is facilitated by the ability to apply analytics to an entire corpus of data instead of a random sample. Since the corpus essentially includes all data within a population there is no need to apply any of the precautions that are in order to ensure the representativeness of a sample in traditional statistical analysis. Several examples are …

Refining Environmental Satellite Data Using A Statistical Approach, Md Zahidur Rahman, Leonid Roytman, Abdelhamid Kadik

Publications and Research

The proposed approach in this article applies an efficient and novel statistical technique to accurately describe radiometric data measured by Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometers (AVHRR) onboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellites (POES). The corrected data set will then be applied to improve the strength of NOAA Global Vegetation Index (GVI) data set for the 1982- 2003 period produced from AVHRR. The GVI is used extensively for studying and monitoring land surface, atmosphere and recently for analyzing climate and environmental changes. The POES AVHRR data, though useful, cannot be directly used in climate change …

Modelling And Data Frameworks For Understanding Infrastructure Systems Throuh A Systems-Of-Systems Lens, Matthew J. Berryman, Rohan Wickramasuriya, Vu Lam Cao, Pascal Perez Jan 2013

Modelling And Data Frameworks For Understanding Infrastructure Systems Throuh A Systems-Of-Systems Lens, Matthew J. Berryman, Rohan Wickramasuriya, Vu Lam Cao, Pascal Perez

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Modelling and analysis of large systems of infrastructure systems carries with it a number of challenges, in particular around the volume of data and the requisite complexity (and thus computing resources required) of models. In this paper we present an integrated land use–transportation model of a region in Sydney, and detail how we integrated an agent-based model of location and transport choice with a traffic micro-simulator. We also discuss both some novel architectures for scalability of modelling as well as for fusion and relevant visualisation of large data sets. We have a particular focus on geospatial infrastructure data visualisation.

Data-Driven Modeling And Analysis Of Household Travel Mode Choice, Nagesh Shukla, Jun Ma, Rohan Wickramasuriya Denagamage, Nam N. Huynh Jan 2013

Data-Driven Modeling And Analysis Of Household Travel Mode Choice, Nagesh Shukla, Jun Ma, Rohan Wickramasuriya Denagamage, Nam N. Huynh

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

One of the important problems studied in the area of travel behavior analysis is travel mode choice which is one of the four crucial steps in transportation demand estimation for urban planning. State of the art models in travel demand modelling can be classified as trip based; tour based; and activity based. In trip based approach, each individual trips is modelled as independent and isolated trips i.e. no connections between different trips. In tour based approach, trips that start and end from the same location (home, work, etc) and trips within a tour are dependent on each other. In past …

A Novel Approach To Data Deduplication Over The Engineering-Oriented Cloud Systems, Zhe Sun, Jun Shen, Jianming Young Jan 2013

A Novel Approach To Data Deduplication Over The Engineering-Oriented Cloud Systems, Zhe Sun, Jun Shen, Jianming Young

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This paper presents a duplication-less storage system over the engineering-oriented cloud computing platforms. Our deduplication storage system, which manages data and duplication over the cloud system, consists of two major components, a front-end deduplication application and a mass storage system as back-end. Hadoop distributed file system (HDFS) is a common distribution file system on the cloud, which is used with Hadoop database (HBase). We use HDFS to build up a mass storage system and employ HBase to build up a fast indexing system. With a deduplication application, a scalable and parallel deduplicated cloud storage system can be effectively built up. …

The Shoreline Inventory Summary Tables quantify observed conditions based on river systems, such as the combined length of linear features (e.g. shoreline miles surveyed, miles of bulkhead and revetment), the total number of point features (e.g. docks, boathouses, boat ramps) & total acres of polygon features (tidal marshes).
