Monitoring At-Home Care Patients Through A Scalar Polar Plot Visualization Of Motion Sensor Data, Michael Mcgavin

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

In Canada, approximately 18 percent (6.6 million) of the total population are age 65 or older, and 88 percent of people over age 65 want to stay in their residence for as long as possible. This older demographic is a group that is dependent on proactive and preventative healthcare. Using motion sensor data collected from a local company providing home-care services to this demographic, a data visualization was constructed to assist users in observing patient behavior and improving their quality of life while maintaining their independence. However, since the collected data is time-based, it results in a dataset that is …

Deep Machine Learning For Mechanical Performance And Failure Prediction, Elijah Reber, Nickolas D. Winovich, Guang Lin Aug 2018

Deep Machine Learning For Mechanical Performance And Failure Prediction, Elijah Reber, Nickolas D. Winovich, Guang Lin

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Deep learning has provided opportunities for advancement in many fields. One such opportunity is being able to accurately predict real world events. Ensuring proper motor function and being able to predict energy output is a valuable asset for owners of wind turbines. In this paper, we look at how effective a deep neural network is at predicting the failure or energy output of a wind turbine. A data set was obtained that contained sensor data from 17 wind turbines over 13 months, measuring numerous variables, such as spindle speed and blade position and whether or not the wind turbine experienced …

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

In the sports industry, there has not been enough effort in analyzing the personalized monitoring data of athletes collected during training sessions. This research is an attempt to find meaningful patterns in the Purdue Women’s Soccer training data that could help the coach design more efficient training sessions. We are specifically interested in studying this problem as an unsupervised learning problem. Our initial attempt is to cluster the players as well as drills into groups using k-means, c-means and spectral clustering algorithms, combined with feature transformation and reduction steps. These basic algorithms serve as a benchmark to measure performance improvements …
