Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1988 Annual Summary, Bruce Barber, James Whitcomb
Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1988 Annual Summary, Bruce Barber, James Whitcomb
Reports
The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts annual surveys of oyster spatfall ( or "sett.ing") in Virginia waters. This survey provides an estimate of the potential of a particular area for receiving a "striken or set of oysters and helps define the timiug of setting events. In 1988 spatfall was monitored from June 6 to October 16 at a total of forty-two stations (Figure 1). · During this period shellstrings were deployed at each station (0.5m off the bottom) on a weekly basis. A shellstring consists of 12 oyster shells drilled through the center and strung on a piece …

Deployment : The tripods were assembled, tested and secured onboard the RIV Sea Diver, which left the Little Creek Amphibious Base in Norfolk, Virginia early on 26 September. While underway to the deployment site, the continuous surface water conductivity and temperature survey was run and several CTD casts were made. The tripods were deployed on 26 September and secured to the sea floor with sand anchors by VIMS divers. The R/V Sea Diver then began the series of on/off shore transects at the tripod deployment site for approximately 12 hours. The vessel returned to port on 27 September .

Experimental Studies Of Zinc-65 Uptake Rates By The American Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica With Regard To Salinity, Sediment Concentration, And Body Size, Cheol Mo, Bruce Neilson
Reports
Three sets of twelve oysters from the ,James River were placed in three recirculating aquaria dosed with the radioactive tracer zinc-65. All aquaria had the same amount of river bottom sediment which was kept in suspension by the water movement caused by aeration; one aquarium had twice as much tracer as the other two. The salinity of one of the low dose aquaria and. the high dose aquarium was maintained at 18 0/00: the other low dose aquarium was maintained at 1:2 0/00. All other factors were kept constant. Sediment-water-tracer mix was added to the aquaria every 12 hours. Water …

An Ongoing Survey Of Halodule Wrightii, Ruppia Maritima And The Alga, Caulerpa Prolifera, In Hillsborough Bay, Florida, City Of Tampa Department Of Sanitary Sewers
Reports
The Bay Study Group intends to periodically monitor seagrass coverage, seagrass speciecs composition, and C. prolifera coverage within Hillsborough Bay and adjacent waters. Potential relationships between various environmental parameters and seagrass coverage will be investigated. Results should provide valuable information concerning natural seagrass renewal and rates of seagrass growth. Such information is much needed in order to make sound decisions concerning seagrass restoration and viable mitigation options.

The State Of The Bay - 1987, Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council (Tbrpc), Agency On Bay Management
Reports
Council's Agency on Bay Management has continued to lead and support major Bay related activities through legislation, development review, intergovernmental coordination, impact assessment and public education in 1987. Management and research efforts expand for the Bay as awareness grows of its significance. The State of the Bay - 1987 document represents the compilation of regional activities and these expanding effort to promote the Tampa Bay estuary.
Water Quality 1986 - 1987 Hillsborough County, Florida, Hillsborough County Environmental Protection Commission
Water Quality 1986 - 1987 Hillsborough County, Florida, Hillsborough County Environmental Protection Commission
Reports
The Hillsborough County Environmental Protection Act charges the Environmental Protection commission with the function of establishing, operating and maintaining a continuous program for monitoring water pollution. A county-wide water quality surveillance network has been designed to enable the staff to determine compliance with the Act and to determine whether the level of water pollution is increasing or decreasing throughout the county.
These data, obtained during 1972-1987 may provide useful background for eventual development, revision _ and enforcement of regulations, standard effluent limitation plans, or programs established under the Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1972.
Population Status Of Five Potentially Threatened Vascular Plants From Coastal Plain Tidal Rivers In Virginia, Carl Hershner, James Perry
Population Status Of Five Potentially Threatened Vascular Plants From Coastal Plain Tidal Rivers In Virginia, Carl Hershner, James Perry
Reports
Work is underway to clarify the population status of Virginia's biota that have been considered rare, endangered, or of an unknown population status by earlier scientists (Porter, 1979). The purpose of the current study was to investigate the population status and areal distribution of five of these plant species found on the tidal rivers of the Coasta1 Plain in Virginia. Although only a small portion of a much larger effort, it is hoped that this work will help fill some of the gaps that exist in our data base on these species. Furthermore, it is hoped that the following information …
Recalibration Of Pagan River Water Quality Model, Albert Kuo, Gamble M. Sisson, Bruce J. Neilson
Recalibration Of Pagan River Water Quality Model, Albert Kuo, Gamble M. Sisson, Bruce J. Neilson
Reports
Two water quality models of the Pagan River were developed in the 1970s by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. The first model was developed under the CSA (cooperative state agencies) program (Kuo, Lewis and Fang, 1976). It simulated the oxidation of organic matter and the effect that, and reaeration, had on the dissolved oxygen regime of the river. The model included four water quality parameters: salinity, dissolved oxygen, carbonaceous oxygen demand and nitrogenous oxygen demand. A later model, developed as part of the Hampton Roads 208 studies, was an expansion of the first one. It included the nitrogen and …
Analysis Of Effluents And Associated Sediments And Tissue For Toxic Organic Compounds, 1987-1988 : Final Report To Virginia State Water Control Board, Robert Hale, Craig L. Smith
Analysis Of Effluents And Associated Sediments And Tissue For Toxic Organic Compounds, 1987-1988 : Final Report To Virginia State Water Control Board, Robert Hale, Craig L. Smith
Reports
Effluent and sediment samples were collected from 30 point source discharge sites within tributaries to the Chesapeake Bay, and analyzed for the presence of toxic organic compounds. The facilities selected included: municipal treatment plants, oil refining and storage operations, shipyards, military bases, paper companies, electrical power generators and various other manufacturing enterprises. In addition to sediment, shellfish were collected from the receiving streams. Unfortunately, environmental conditions in the vicinity of many of the facilities were unsatisfactory for the long-term survival of shellfish. As a consequence their availability was limited. ....

During the months of June and September 1988, gear experiments were conducted aboard the F/V Carolina Dawn and Carolina Capes. The primary objective of the experiments was to assess the technical efficiency and size selectivity of 3.5-inch ring dredges relative to the current commercially-used 3.0-inch ring dredges. Secondary objectives were to analyze the economic and regulatory ramifications of using 3.5-inch ring dredges to control the age-at-capture and enhance the yield-per- recruit.
