To investigate the mechanisms for the initiation and early-stage evolution of the nonvolcanic southernmost segments of the East African Rift System (EARS), we installed and operated 35 broadband seismic stations across the Malawi and Luangwa rift zones over a 2 year period from mid-2012 to mid-2014. Stacking of over 1900 high-quality receiver functions provides the first regional-scale image of the 410 and 660 km seismic discontinuities bounding the mantle transition zone (MTZ) within the vicinity of the rift zones. When a 1-D standard Earth model is used for time-depth conversion, a normal MTZ thickness of 250 km is found beneath …

Numerous investigations of the mature segments of the East African rift system (EARS) have significantly improved our understanding of the structure and processes associated with well-developed continental rifts. In contrast, knowledge of rifting processes at their early stage is still significantly limited. Here we present results from a teleseismic P-wave tomography investigation of the incipient Okavango rift zone (ORZ), which is located at the southwestern terminus of the EARS. P-wave relative travel-time residuals recorded by 17 recently deployed portable seismic stations were manually picked and inverted for three-dimensional upper-mantle and mantle transition-zone tomographic images beneath the ORZ and its adjacent …

The Tian Shan is a tectonically complex intracontinental orogenic belt situated between the Tarim Basin and the Kazakh Shield. The vast majority of the previous shear wave splitting (SWS) measurements were presented as station averages, which are only valid when the anisotropy structure can be approximated by a single layer of anisotropy with a horizontal axis of symmetry, i.e., a model of simple anisotropy. A variety of anisotropy-forming hypotheses have been proposed based on the station-averaged measurements. In this study, we measure the splitting parameters at 25 stations that recorded high-quality data from a wide back azimuthal range for the …

The Afar Depression and its adjacent areas are underlain by an upper mantle marked by some of the world's largest negative velocity anomalies, which are frequently attributed to the thermal influences of a lower-mantle plume. In spite of numerous studies, however, the existence of a plume beneath the area remains enigmatic, partially due to inadequate quantities of broad-band seismic data and the limited vertical resolution at the mantle transition zone (MTZ) depth of the techniques employed by previous investigations. In this study, we use an unprecedented quantity (over 14 500) of P-to-S receiver functions (RFs) recorded by 139 stations from …

We present a new version of a shear-wave splitting (SWS) database for the western and central United States (WCUS) using broadband seismic data recorded up to the end of 2014 to update a previous version that used data recorded prior to the end of 2012, when the USArray Transportable Array stations were still recording in the easternmost region of theWCUS. A total of 7452 pairs of additional measurements recorded by 1202 digital broadband seismic stations are obtained, and all the measurements in the previous database are rechecked. The resulting uniform SWS database contains a total of 23,448 pairs of well-defined …

Rifting incorporates the fundamental processes concerning the breakup of continental lithosphere and plays a significant role in the formation and evolution of sedimentary basins. In order to decipher the characteristics of rifting at its earliest stage, we conduct the first teleseismic crustal study of one of the world's youngest continental rifts, the Okavango Rift Zone (ORZ), where the magma has not yet breached the surface. Results from receiver function stacking and gravity modeling indicate that the crust/mantle boundary beneath the ORZ is uplifted by 4-5 km, and the initiation of the ORZ is closely related to lithospheric stretching. Possible decompression …

Clustering Data Of Mixed Categorical And Numerical Type With Unsupervised Feature Learning, Dao Lam, Mingzhen Wei, Donald C. Wunsch

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Mixed-type categorical and numerical data are a challenge in many applications. This general area of mixed-type data is among the frontier areas, where computational intelligence approaches are often brittle compared with the capabilities of living creatures. In this paper, unsupervised feature learning (UFL) is applied to the mixed-type data to achieve a sparse representation, which makes it easier for clustering algorithms to separate the data. Unlike other UFL methods that work with homogeneous data, such as image and video data, the presented UFL works with the mixed-type data using fuzzy adaptive resonance theory (ART). UFL with fuzzy ART (UFLA) obtains …

Mechanisms leading to the initiation and early-stage development of continental rifts remain enigmatic, in spite of numerous studies. Among the various rifting models, which were developed mostly based on studies of mature rifts, far-field stresses originating from plate interactions (passive rifting) and nearby active mantle upwelling (active rifting) are commonly used to explain rift dynamics. Situated atop of the hypothesized African Superplume, the incipient Okavango Rift Zone (ORZ) of northern Botswana is ideal to investigate the role of mantle plumes in rift initiation and development, as well as the interaction between the upper and lower mantle. The ORZ developed within …

Pore Pressure Evolution And Fluid Flow During Visco-Elastic Single-Layer Buckle Folding, Andreas Eckert, X. Liu, P. Connolly May 2015

Pore Pressure Evolution And Fluid Flow During Visco-Elastic Single-Layer Buckle Folding, Andreas Eckert, X. Liu, P. Connolly

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Pore pressure and fluid flow during the deformational history of geologic structures are directly influenced by tectonic deformation events. In this contribution, 2D plane strain finite element analysis is used to study the influence of different permeability distributions on the pore pressure field and associated flow regimes during the evolution of visco-elastic single-layer buckle folds. The buckling-induced fluid flow regimes indicate that flow directions and, to a lesser degree, their magnitudes vary significantly throughout the deformation and as a function of the stratigraphic permeability distribution. The modelling results suggest that the volumetric strain and the permeability distribution significantly affect the …

The receiver function (RF) technique has been widely applied to investigate crustal and mantle layered structures using P-to-S converted (Ps) phases from velocity discontinuities. However, the presence of low-velocity (relative to that of the bedrock) sediments can give rise to strong reverberations in the resulting RFs, frequently masking the Ps phases from crustal and mantle boundaries. Such reverberations are caused by P-to-S conversions and their multiples associated with the strong impedance contrast across the bottom of the low-velocity sedimentary layer. Here we propose and test an approach to effectively remove the near-surface reverberations and decipher the Ps phases associated with …

This study represents the first multistation investigation of azimuthal anisotropy beneath the interior of north central Africa, including Libya and adjacent regions, using shear wave splitting (SWS) analysis. Data used in the study include recently available broadband seismic data obtained from 15 stations managed by the Libyan Center for Remote Sensing and Space Science, and those from five other stations at which data are publicly accessible. A total of 583 pairs of high-quality SWS measurements utilizing the PKS, SKKS, and SKS phases demonstrate primarily N-S fast orientations with an average splitting delay time of approximately 1.2 s. An absence of …

A Systematic Comparison Of The Transverse Energy Minimization And Splitting Intensity Techniques For Measuring Shear-Wave Splitting Parameters, Fansheng Kong, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu Feb 2015

A Systematic Comparison Of The Transverse Energy Minimization And Splitting Intensity Techniques For Measuring Shear-Wave Splitting Parameters, Fansheng Kong, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Over the past several decades, shear-wave splitting (SWS) analyses have been increasingly utilized to delineate mantle structure and probe mantle dynamics. However, the reported splitting parameters (fast polarization orientations and splitting times) are frequently inconsistent among different studies, partially due to the different techniques used to estimate the splitting parameters. Here, we report results from a systematic comparison of the transverse minimization (TM) and the splitting intensity (SI) techniques. The study was motivated by the fact that recent comparative studies led to conflicting conclusions, which include the suggestion that TM, which is arguably the most widely used SWS-measuring technique, performs …

Large-Scale Mechanical Buckle Fold Development And The Initiation Of Tensile Fractures, Andreas Eckert, Peter Connolly, Xiaolong Liu Nov 2014

Large-Scale Mechanical Buckle Fold Development And The Initiation Of Tensile Fractures, Andreas Eckert, Peter Connolly, Xiaolong Liu

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Tensile failure associated with buckle folding is commonly associated to the distribution of outer arc extension but has also been observed on fold limbs. This study investigates whether tensile stresses and associated failure can be explained by the process of buckling under realistic in situ stress conditions. A 2-D plane strain finite element modeling approach is used to study single-layer buckle folds with a Maxwell viscoelastic rheology. A variety of material parameters are considered and their influence on the initiation of tensile stresses during the various stages of deformation is analyzed. It is concluded that the buckling process determines the …

Mantle Transition Zone Discontinuities Beneath The Contiguous United States, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu Aug 2014

Mantle Transition Zone Discontinuities Beneath The Contiguous United States, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Using over 310,000 high-quality radial receiver functions recorded by the USArray and other seismic stations in the contiguous United States, the depths of the 410 km and 660 km discontinuities (d410 and d660) are mapped in over 1,000 consecutive overlapping circles with a radius of 1⁰. The average mantle transition zone (MTZ) thickness for both the western and central/eastern U.S. is within 3 km from the global average of 250 km, suggesting an overall normal MTZ temperature beneath both areas. The Pacific Coast Ranges and the southern Basin and Range Province are underlain by a depressed d410, indicating higher-than-normal temperature …

Seismic Imaging Of Mantle Transition Zone Discontinuities Beneath The Northern Red Sea And Adjacent Areas, A. A. Mohamed, Stephen S. Gao, A. A. Elsheikh, Kelly H. Liu, Youqiang Yu, R. E. Fat-Helbary

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The dramatic asymmetry in terms of surface elevation, Cenozoic volcanisms and earthquake activity across the Red Sea is an enigmatic issue in global tectonics, partially due to the unavailability of broad-band seismic data on the African Plate adjacent to the Red Sea. Here, we report the first comprehensive image of the mantle transition zone (MTZ) discontinuities using data from the Egyptian National Seismic Network, and compare the resulting depths of the 410 and 660-km discontinuities with those observed on the Arabian side. Our results show that when a standard earth model is used for time-to-depth conversion, the resulting depth of …

We present a shear wave splitting (SWS) database for the western and central United States as part of a lasting effort to build a uniform SWS database for the entire North America. The SWS measurements were obtained by minimizing the energy on the transverse component of the PKS, SKKS, and SKS phases. Each of the individual measurements was visually checked to ensure quality. This version of the database contains 16,105 pairs of splitting parameters. The data used to generate the parameters were recorded by 1774 digital broadband seismic stations over the period of 1989-2012, and represented all the available data …

Seismic Anisotropy And Subduction-Induced Mantle Fabrics Beneath The Arabian And Nubian Plates Adjacent To The Red Sea, Ahmed A. Elsheikh, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu, Abdelnasser A. Mohamed, Youqiang Yu, Raafat E. Fat-Helbary Apr 2014

Seismic Anisotropy And Subduction-Induced Mantle Fabrics Beneath The Arabian And Nubian Plates Adjacent To The Red Sea, Ahmed A. Elsheikh, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu, Abdelnasser A. Mohamed, Youqiang Yu, Raafat E. Fat-Helbary

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

For most continental areas, the mechanisms leading to mantle fabrics responsible for the observed anisotropy remain ambiguous, partially due to the lack of sufficient spatial coverage of reliable seismological observations. Here we report the first joint analysis of shear-wave splitting measurements obtained at stations on the Arabian and Nubian Plates adjacent to the Red Sea. More than 1100 pairs of high-quality splitting parameters show dominantly N-S fast orientations at all 47 stations and larger-than-normal splitting times beneath the Afro-Arabian Dome (AAD). The uniformly N-S fast orientations and large splitting times up to 1.5 s are inconsistent with significant contributions from …

Seismic Anisotropy And Mantle Flow Beneath The Northern Great Plains Of North America, Bin B. Yang, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu, Ahmed A. Elsheikh, Awad A. Lemnifi, Hesham A. Refayee, Youqiang Yu

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A diverse set of tectonic features and the recent availability of high-quality broadband seismic data from the USArray and other stations on the northern Great Plains of North America provide a distinct opportunity to test different anisotropy-forming mechanisms. A total of 4138 pairs of well-defined splitting parameters observed at 445 stations show systematic spatial variations of anisotropic characteristics. Azimuthally invariant fast orientations subparallel to the absolute plate motion (APM) direction are observed at most of the stations on the Superior Craton and the southern Yavapai province, indicating that a single layer of anisotropy with a horizontal axis of symmetry is …

Receiver Function Constraints On Crustal Seismic Velocities And Partial Melting Beneath The Red Sea Rift And Adjacent Regions, Afar Depression, Cory A. Reed, Sattam Almadani, Stephen S. Gao, Ahmed A. Elsheikh, Solomon Cherie, Mohamed G. Abdel Salam, Allison K. Thurmond, Kelly H. Liu

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Afar Depression is an ideal locale for the investigation of crustal processes involved in the transition from continental rifting to oceanic spreading. To provide relatively high resolution images of the crust beneath the Red Sea rift (RSR) represented by the Tendaho graben in the Afar Depression, we deployed an array of 18 broadband seismic stations in 2010 and 2011. Stacking of about 2300 receiver functions from the 18 and several nearby stations along the ~200 km long array reveals an average crustal thickness of 22 ± 4 km, ranging from ~17 km near the RSR axis to 30 km …
