Hubble’s Law relates the distance and velocity of receding galaxies using a constant known as the Hubble Constant. This lab activity calculated the Hubble Constant and approximated the age of the universe using publicly available data, using Edwin Hubble’s original principles.

In this experiment, we will study the properties of entropy, multiplicity and probability using dice. We will roll 4 & 8 sided dice together and 4, 6, and 8 sided dice together for many trials and we will record the sum of the dice for each roll. We will then calculate each possible outcome’s expected multiplicity and probability of occurring. We can also predict each outcome’s expected entropy and compare these expected values of multiplicity and entropy to their actual values we found in this experiment. In this experiment, we analyzed the images and spectra of multiple galaxies and found the velocity and distance from Earth of each galaxy. Plotting the velocity against distance, we found a value for the Hubble constant using the slope of the trendline. This value was used to compute the age of the universe. Both the Hubble constant and the age of the universe were compared to the currently accepted values for consistency.

In both forensic and environmental applications, it is often important to identify ignitable liquid (IL) residues, to find a suspect or to clean up an oil spill. The ASTM method is commonly used; the extraction methods vary, but the data collection is the same. The instrument used in the ASTM method is gas chromatography mass spectroscopy (GC-MS), which allows a visual identification of the IL contaminating the sample. Analysis Of Phenolic Compounds In Moroccan Olive Oils By Hplc, Hannah Meyls, Sarah Porter

Five extra virgin olive oils collected from farms in Morocco were analyzed for phenolic compounds. To complement these data, the chemical composition of the olive oils were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Several phenolic compounds were identified and quantified in the olive oils. Specifically, levels of oleuropein and luteolin were quantified in the low mg/kg range, and qualitative comparisons were made between the oil samples for tyrosol, vanillic acid, and apigenin. To compare extraction efficiency of different extraction solvents, methanol and DMF were used.
