Most statistical methods require assumptions about the populations from which samples are taken. Usually these methods measure the parameters, such as variance, standard deviations, means, etc., of the respective populations. One example is the assumption that a given population can be approximated closely with a normal curve. Since these assumptions are not always valid, statisticians have developed several alternate techniques known as nonparametric tests. The models of such tests do not specify conditions about population parameters.

A Bayesian estimate of reliability for each component in the system of n-components, each exponentially distributed, is developed which utilizes the basic notion of loss in estimation theory. Here we assume that each component is independently dis­tributed. In reliability estimation, the loss associated with over­estimation is usually greater than the loss associated with under­estimation; and hence loss function can be a very useful tool. The effect of Mg⁺⁺ ion on the solubility of calcium carbonate was determined using P. K. Weyls "carbonate saturometer."

The amount of calcium carbonate precipitated or dissolved was measured for five series of waters when equilibrated with solid carbonate.

It was found that the effect of Mg⁺⁺ ion on solubility depend upon the nature of the solid phase: surface area, coprecipitated Mg⁺⁺, minerology, etc.

Pure low area calcite showed an increase in solubility which could be explained by ion-pair formation, while its other carbonates departed from this behavior.

This paper presents the results of the analysis of 10 years of information 1957-1966 on three phases-- begin, peak and end bloom-- of the purple common lilac (Syringa vulgaris L.) using data recorded at approximately 1,000 locations throughout the Western Region of the United States.

The pattern of geographical advance of the various bloom phases is determined by both a manual mapping procedure developed by the author and by standard statistical methods. The objective of this investigation was to study the effect of chemical competition on thermodynamics of bacterial adsorption. This was done using an experimental system consisting of Mendon silt loam soil as the adsorbent, Staphylococcus aureus as a common adsorbate and sodium chloride (NaCl), sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), and peptone as competitive adsorbates.

The bacterial adsorption on soil both with and without chemical competition followed Langmuir type isotherms. From the equilibrium data, thermodynamic functions such as free energy, ΔF°, enthalpy, ΔH°, and entropy, ΔS°, were calculated. Growth chamber studies showed that a relationship exists between transpiration and dry matter production of spring wheat (Tritiaum Aestivum L. var . Thatcher). A temperature of 27 C for a 16-hour day,and 21 C at night were used throughout the experiment. The mapped area represents the eastern three-fourths of the Smithfield quadrangle, Utah. This quadrangle is located in the central part of northern Utah about 8.6 miles south of the Utah-Idaho State Line. The Bear River Range, along the eastern margin of the quadrangle, consists of stratigraphic units ranging in age from Precambrian to Devonian. The Salt Lake Formation of Tertiary age rests unconformably on Precambrian quartzite and Paleozoic units along the western side of the range. The Lake Bonneville Group overlaps Cambrian rocks in the southern part of the area and overlaps the Salt Lake Formation in the northern part. …

The Bear Lake Plateau extends north-south across the north central corner of Utah and the southeastern corner of Idaho. North Eden Creek drains westward through part of the plateau and is crossaxial across both strikes of beds and other structures in the area. The formations in the area mapped are of Triassic, Jurassic, and Tertiary age, although only Jurassic and Tertiary rocks contribute sediments to North Eden Creek. The formations consist of sandstones (Nugget), limestones (Twin Creek), and conglomerates (Wasatch). A local extrusion of basalt occurs in the southwestern part of the drainage area.

A variety of new mean value theorems are presented along with interesting proofs and generalizations of the standard theorems.

Three proofs are given for the ordinary Mean Value Theorem for derivatives, the third of which is interesting in that it is independent of of Rolle's Theorem. The Second Mean Value Theorem for derivatives is generalized, with the use of determinants, to three functions and also generalized in terms of n-th order derivatives.

A series of Basic Assembler Language subroutines were developed and made available to the FORTRAN IV language processor which makes list processing possible in a flexible and easily understood way.

The subroutine will create and maintain list structures in the computer's core storage. The subroutines are sufficiently general to permit FORTRAN programmers to tailor list processing routines to their own individual requirements. List structure sizes are limited only by the amount of core storage available.

The photochemical reactions occurring in aqueous solutions of octacyanomolybdate(V) ion, Mo(CN)₈^3-, during irradiation with light of 365 and 436 nm wavelengths were studied. The quantum yields and reaction products were determined for neutral, unbuffered solutions as well as solutions buffered at pH 4.0, 7.0, and 9.0.

The results of these studies showed that the Mo(CN)₈^3- ion is rapidly reduced by light to a Mo(IV) complex. In neutral or acidic media, the initial photoreduction product was found to be the red heptacyanoaquomolybdate(IV) ion, Mo(CN)₇(H₂O)^3-. Photolysis in basic solution gave the …

Environmental factors at Neponset and Woodruff Narrows reservoirs were evaluated to determine their effects on molting Canada geese. More geese utilized Woodruff Narrows. Geese apparently favored the larger expanse of open water and adequate food supply.

Most of the molting geese were from the Bear River drainage. Some geese came from scattered areas in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. After molting, the geese flew to migration staging areas in southeastern Idaho before migrating to wintering areas in southern California and Arizona.

Females outnumbered males by 6 percent. The mean annual mortality rate for adult geese was 42 percent. Recovery rates …

A new model developed for the entire bathtub-shaped hazard rate curve has been evaluated as to its usefulness as a method of reliability estimation. The model is of the form:

F(t) = 1 - exp - (ϴ₁t^L + ϴ₂t + ϴ₃t^M)

where "L" and "M" were assumed known.

The estimate of reliability obtained from the new model was compared with the traditional restricted sample estimate for four different time intervals and was found to have less bias and variance for all time points.

The social behavior of juvenile Uinta ground squirrels (Spermophilus armatus) was studied for 2 1/2 years in northeastern Utah. The purpose of the study was to describe the developing social behavior of unconfined, marked squirrels. Their behavior was recorded with motion pictures and written descriptions from the time they emerged from the natal burrow until they entered hibernation.

Three phases of behavioral development were apparent. The first phase began when the juveniles appeared above ground and ended 5 weeks later. This was a period of socialization and consisted of behavioral patterns best described as play. The second phase …

A mathematical model was developed to predict the exchange of one cation by another in a soil column undergoing one dimensional cation solution displacement under steady state flow conditions. The model allowed prediction of both the solution and exchanger phase concentration of the cation in question.

The model consists of a material balance equation which is a parabolic type partial differential equation. The assumption was made that equilibrium was reached instantaneously between the cations in the solution phase and the exchanger phase.
