A large shift of the onset of flux-flow resistivity and the irreversibility line Hirr (T) to higher temperatures is observed in Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 films containing linear defects created by Ag+21 ion irradiation. The Hirr(T), which has a characteristic ssL shape in highly anisotropic Tl and Bi based cuprates, becomes more like that of YBa2Cu3O7 in the presence of these defects. The Jc at 77 K also shows a large increase as a result of flux localization at the …

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
The purpose of this project was to conduct a systematic inventory of rare plant species on the Pine Ridge District of the Nebraska National Forest. The objective of the inventory was to locate rare plant occurrences and compile information on their location, status and any possible threats. Four areas within the Pine Ridge District were identified as priority areas for the inventory fieldwork. The four tracts included the Soldier Creek Wilderness Area, a tract encompassing the East and West Ash Creek drainages, a middle unit tract, and a tract which straddles U.S. Highway 385 and encompasses a number of timber …

Characterization Of Boron Carbide Thin Films Fabricated By Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition From Boranes, Sunwoo Lee, John Mazurowski, G. Ramseyer, Peter A. Dowben
Peter Dowben Publications
We have fabricated boron carbide thin films on Si(111) and other substrates by plasma-enhanced chemical-vapor deposition (PECVD). The PECVD of boron carbides from nido-cage boranes, specially nido-pentaborane(9) (B5H9), and methane ( CH4) is demonstrated. The band gap is closely correlated with the boron to carbon ratio and can range from 0.77 to 1.80 eV and is consistent with the thermal activation barrier of 1.25 eV for conductivity. We have made boron carbide by PECVD from pentaborane and methane that is sufficiently isotropic to obtain resistivities as large as 1010 Ω cm …

Variationally Stable Treatment Of Two- And Three-Photon Detachment Of H- Including Electron-Correlation Effects, Chih-Ray Liu, Bo Gao, Anthony F. Starace
Anthony F. Starace Publications
A variationally stable, adiabatic hyperspherical treatment of two- and three-photon detachment of H- is presented. Results are compared with analytic predictions of a zero-range potential model of H-. Detailed comparisions are made also with other theoretical results which include the effects of electron correlations. We predict analytically (and demonstrate numerically) an extreme sensitivity of the theoretical predictions to any errors in the value of the electron affinity employed. In an Appendix we show that the low-intensity limit of the Keldysh treatment [Sov. Phys. JETP 20, 1307 (1965)] of detachment of an electron bound in a zero-range …

Nio(100) Valence-Band Density Of States During Hydrogen Reduction , K.W. Wulser, B.P. Hearty, Marjorie Langell

Photoelectron spectroscopy with incident photons of 40–120 eV has been used to determine the valence-band structure of NiO(100) as the surface undergoes slow hydrogen reduction. Low pressure and moderate temperature conditions (1.3×10-2 Pa and 625 K) allow oxygen to be removed from the near-surface region with a minimal disruption in the NiO(100) substrate. Both NiO(100) ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) and low-energy electron-diffraction features persist at NiO(100) reduced surfaces throughout the reduction process. In addition, reduced nickel features slowly grow into the UP spectra, with the most intense peak found in the NiO band gap. Chemisorbed hydrogen, hydroxyls, and oxygen …

We have measured coincidences between neutral H atoms and Lyman-α photons for collisions between 50-keV protons and noble gases as a function of the projectile scattering angle. The coincidences are dominated by capture to the 2p state of the projectile. While the total cross sections depend strongly on the target, the shape of the angular distribution of the differential cross sections was found to depend only weakly on that parameter. The data indicate that electrons are captured predominantly from the outermost shell of the target atom for the collision systems studied here.

Stars Classified As Constant In The General Catalog Of Variable Stars, Edward G. Schmidt, John R. Chab, Darwin E. Reiswig
Edward Schmidt Publications
Photometric observations have been made of 16 stars classified as constant, CST or CST:, in the General Catalog of Variable Stars. One star, U Tauri, was found to be a rapid irregular variable and three others may vary at a low level. In two cases, FV Delphini and FP Geminorum, the star identified as the variable on published finding charts is not variable but a nearby star did vary. It is suggested that the wrong stars were marked on the charts but the possibility remains that the variables may have exhibited constancy during earlier observations.
Competition Between Ponderomotive And Thermal Forces In Short-Scale-Length Laser Plasmas, X. Liu, Donald P. Umstadter
Competition Between Ponderomotive And Thermal Forces In Short-Scale-Length Laser Plasmas, X. Liu, Donald P. Umstadter
Donald Umstadter Publications
Interactions of intense 400-fs laser pulses with a solid target are studied with time-integrated and time-resolved measurements. The latter are accomplished by means of a pump and probe experiment, in which the motion of the critical surface is measured with 250-fs resolution. It is found that when the average electron quiver energy (mvos2/2) becomes comparable to the electron thermal energy (kTe), the ponderomotive force of the high-intensity laser significantly reduces the thermal expansion of a laser plasma. This study is performed in an interesting regime not easily accessible with longer pulse lasers, in …

Gas Phase Interstitial Modification Of Rare-Earth Intermetallics, J.M.D. Coey, Ralph Skomski, S. Wirth
Ralph Skomski Publications
The gar phase interstitial modification of rare-earth intermetallics is studied. Net reaction energies for nitrogen in Sm2Fe17 and Nd(Fe11T1) are U0 = - 57 kJ/mole and U0 = - 51 kJ/mole, respectively. The equilibrium nitrogen concentration is calculated as function of temperature and gas pressure using a simple lattice gas model. For nitrogen in Sm2Fe17, refined diffusion parameters D0 (N) = 1.02 mm2/r and Ea(N) = 133 kJ/mole, determined by thermopiezic analysis of the initial stage of nitrogen absorption, are used to calculate nitrogen profiles and …

Morphometric analysis revealed three distinctive groups among the genera of emballonurids. Taphozous-Saccolaimus is a group distinctive in size and shape, particularly cranially. Diclidurids are distinctive in appendicular characters only, especially those in the wing. The third group include all other emballonurids. Phylogenetic studies also separated Taphozous-Saccolaimus as distinctive but included diclidurids among other New World species. Compared with molossids, emballonurids are morphometrically quite homogeneous.

Modification Of The Stilling Basin At Arthur R. Bowman Dam, Oregon To Reduce Dissolved Gas Supersaturation, Perry Johnson
United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications
A physical model study was conducted in the Hydraulics Laboratory of the us Bureau of Reclamation to develop a modification for the stilling basin at Arthur R. Bowman Dam, Oregon. Flow through the existing stilling basin generates supersaturated dissolved gas levels that exceed state standards. Alternatives stilling basin designs were considered. Resulting dissolved gas levels, modified energy dissipation, and potential structure and river bottom and bank erosion were evaluated.

Study Of Groins On The Middle Rio Grande, Drew Baird, Cassie Klump
United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications
The Albuquerque Projects Office of the Bureau of Reclamation installed groins on the Middle Rio Grande to provide bank protection at a severe bend located near Santa Clara Indian Pueblo, approximately 75 miles (121 kIn) upstream of Albuquerque, New Mexico. During the first season of operation of the groins, a discharge near the 2 year design flood of 7,600 ft.3 /s (215 m3 /s) was experienced at the site. Many of the groins showed damage following the recession of the runoff, but performed well at the site. Replacement of riprap will be accomplished before the next runoff season.

User Interface For Pipe Network Program, Istvan Lippai
United States National Park Service: Publications
The importance of providing proper user interfaces for computer solutions to engineering problems is not always recognized. Without a proper user interface, even the best engineering program is of lesser value to the practicing professional. Training courses are regularly offered for some of the better known programs where a significant amount of time is spent learning the data input functions of the program. This paper discusses a programming technique using doubly linked lists (DLL) and data transfer that can result in the development of effective user interfaces.
Steady And Unsteady Flow Profiles In Reclamation, Curtis Orvis
Steady And Unsteady Flow Profiles In Reclamation, Curtis Orvis
United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications
The Bureau of Reclamation owns and operates over 300 dams throughout the 17 western states. For most of these structures, tailwater measurements and steady-state water surface profile computations have been made using the PSEUDO program. Accuracy in water surface profile computations especially downstream from powerplants has been important. Small changes in differential head can mean large changes in power production and associated revenues generated. Peaking operations and flow fluctuations downstream from some dams has made flow conditions unsteady. The DWOPER program has been used to evaluate tailwater conditions under fluctuating flows at a number of sites. The STARS model was …

Channel Restoration Above Elephant Butte Reservoir, Christopher A. Gorbach
United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications
The Bureau of Reclamation is responsible for maintenance of channel facilities above Elephant Butte Reservoir in New Mexico. These facilities are designed to maximize the efficiency of water delivery into the reservoir pool. The major facilities operated and maintained by Reclamation include a rectified floodway channel and the Low Flow Conveyance Channel. When constructed in the 1950's, a period of prolonged drought and low reservoir levels, these channels extended some 20 (32 Ion) miles through then dry areas of the reservoir.
Between 1979 and 1987 flows in the Rio Grande were significantly above normal. Elephant Butte Reservoir filled for the …
