Local moisture recycling plays an essential role in maintaining an active hydrological cycle of the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Previous studies were largely limited to the seasonal time scale due to short and sparse observations, especially for the northwestern TP. In this study, we used a two‐component mixing model to estimate local moisture recycling over the past decades from the deuterium excess records of two ice cores (i.e., Chongce and Zangser Kangri) from the northwestern TP. The results show that on average almost half of the precipitation on the northwestern TP is provided by local moisture recycling. In addition, the local …

Increasing interest in the thermodynamics of small and/or isolated systems, in combination with recent observations of negative temperatures of atoms in ultracold optical lattices, has stimulated the need for estimating the conventional, canonical temperature Tconvc of systems in equilibrium with heat baths using eigenstate-specific temperatures (ESTs). Four distinct ESTs—continuous canonical, discrete canonical, continuous microcanonical, and discrete microcanonical—are accordingly derived for two-level paramagnetic spin lattices (PSLs) in external magnetic fields. At large N, the four ESTs are intensive, equal to Tconvc, and obey all four laws of thermodynamics. In contrast, for N < 1000, the ESTs of most PSL eigenstates are non-intensive, differ from Tconvc, and violate each of the thermodynamic laws. Hence, in spite of their similarities to Tconvc at large N, the ESTs …
Speckle Effects In Target-In-The-Loop Laser Beam Projection Systems, Mikhail Vorontsov
Speckle Effects In Target-In-The-Loop Laser Beam Projection Systems, Mikhail Vorontsov
Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications
In target-in-the-loop laser beam projection scenarios typical of remote sensing, directed energy, and adaptive optics applications, a transmitted laser beam propagates through an optically inhomogeneous medium toward a target, scatters off the target’s rough surface, and returns back to the transceiver plane. Coherent beam scattering off the randomly rough surface results in strong speckle modulation in the transceiver plane. This speckle modulation has been a long-standing challenge that limits performance of remote sensing, active imaging, and adaptive optics techniques. Using physics-based models of laser beam scattering off a randomly rough surface, we show that received speckle-field spatial and temporal characteristics …
Recursive Non-Local Means Filter For Video Denoising, Redha A. Ali, Russell C. Hardie
Recursive Non-Local Means Filter For Video Denoising, Redha A. Ali, Russell C. Hardie
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
In this paper, we propose a computationally efficient algorithm for video denoising that exploits temporal and spatial redundancy. The proposed method is based on non-local means (NLM). NLM methods have been applied successfully in various image denoising applications. In the single-frame NLM method, each output pixel is formed as a weighted sum of the center pixels of neighboring patches, within a given search window.
The weights are based on the patch intensity vector distances. The process requires computing vector distances for all of the patches in the search window. Direct extension of this method from 2D to 3D, for video …

Beclin-1 (BECN1) is an essential component of macroautophagy. This process is a highly conserved survival mechanism that recycles damaged cellular components or pathogens by encasing them in a bilayer vesicle that fuses with a lysosome to allow degradation of the vesicular contents. Mutations or altered expression profiles of BECN1 have been linked to various cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. Viruses, including HIV and herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), are also known to specifically target BECN1 as a means of evading host defense mechanisms. Autophagy is regulated by the interaction between BECN1 and Bcl-2, a pro-survival protein in the apoptotic pathway that …

This study uses a set of 37 firn core records over the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) to test the performance of the twentieth century from the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ERA‐20C) reanalysis for snow accumulation and quantify temporal variability in snow accumulation since 1900. The firn cores are allocated to four geographical areas demarcated by drainage divides (i.e., Antarctic Peninsula (AP), western WAIS, central WAIS, and eastern WAIS) to calculate stacked records of regional snow accumulation. Our results show that the interannual variability in ERA‐20C precipitation minus evaporation (P − E) agrees well with the corresponding ice …
Analysis Of The Joint Impact Of Atmospheric Turbulence And Refractivity On Laser Beam Propagation, Victor A. Kulikov, Mikhail Vorontsov
Analysis Of The Joint Impact Of Atmospheric Turbulence And Refractivity On Laser Beam Propagation, Victor A. Kulikov, Mikhail Vorontsov
Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications
A laser beam propagation model that accounts for the joint effect of atmospheric turbulence and refractivity is introduced and evaluated through numerical simulations. In the numerical analysis of laser beam propagation, refractive index inhomogeneities along the atmospheric propagation path were represented by a combination of the turbulence-induced random fluctuations described in the framework of classical Kolmogorov turbulence theory and large-scale refractive index variations caused by the presence of an inverse temperature layer. The results demonstrate that an inverse temperature layer located in the vicinity of a laser beam’s propagation path may strongly impact the laser beam statistical characteristics including the …
Development, Energy, And Climate Change Policy: Enabling Sustainable Development Through Access To Energy, Robert J. Brecha
Development, Energy, And Climate Change Policy: Enabling Sustainable Development Through Access To Energy, Robert J. Brecha
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
Human rights, human development, and climate change clearly overlap in many ways. Development, as quantified by the Human Development Index (HDI), for example, has historically been strongly correlated with energy consumption. This fact is recognized in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7, to “ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.” Currently the world is in the midst of a large wave of human migration, much of it involuntary and due to stymied development opportunities as well as political upheaval. Climate change will become, or already is, an exacerbating factor in migration dynamics.
A pertinent question is how …
Democratic Civic Engagement: Transformative Local, Inclusive Decision-Making To Achieve Global Peace And Climate Solutions, Leah Ceperley
Democratic Civic Engagement: Transformative Local, Inclusive Decision-Making To Achieve Global Peace And Climate Solutions, Leah Ceperley
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
The UN Sustainable Development Goals call for action on Climate (No. 13) and Strengthening Governance (No. 16) as imperative to transform our world toward one that is resilient, just, and peaceful. Climate change is a global problem, marked frequently in the U.S. by indifference, with far-reaching impacts disproportionately burdening the poor and vulnerable worldwide. Global in scope, its sources, impacts, and fields of action are local. Combating indifference at the local level can strengthen local governance structures, build trust across ideological divides, and shift the conversation from indifference to action.
Using an example from a University of Dayton-sponsored National Issues …

Encounters With Climate Change: How Sdg 13 Can Move From Awareness To Action, Rebecca C. Potter
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
In a well-known passage from his book I and Thou, Martin Buber relates his encounter with a tree: “I contemplate a tree,” he writes, and then lists the various ways he could perceive the tree, as an artist or biologist, as someone interested in the trees parts and construction or interested in its function as a living system. But in all cases, Buber observes, “the tree remains my object and has its place and its time span, its kind and condition.”
Yet sometimes, “if will and grace are conjoined,” Buber describes being drawn into a relation with the tree wherein …

Climate Change, Development, And The Global Commons, Robert J. Brecha
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
An important link between energy, climate change, human development, and human rights comes in the form of a question that has yet to be answered satisfactorily: The earth’s atmosphere and other physical systems are the ultimate example of the global commons. Do future generations have a human right to an unchanged earth system? Sustainable Development Goals 13, 14, and 15 imply an affirmative answer. Given that climate scientists have a good estimate of the amount of carbon dioxide that can be emitted before the safe uptake capacity of the atmosphere is breached, how do we allocate that remaining atmospheric capacity …
Building Academic/Practitioner Teams For Human Rights Projects: Examples, Lessons Learned, And Pitfalls To Avoid, Theresa Harris
Building Academic/Practitioner Teams For Human Rights Projects: Examples, Lessons Learned, And Pitfalls To Avoid, Theresa Harris
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
Academics are increasingly interested in getting out of their classrooms and labs to contribute their knowledge, expertise, and resources to help communities develop evidence-based policies. In addition to post-election initiatives such as the March for Science and 314 Action, many academics are joining “without borders”-type programs and organizations that connect academics with opportunities to volunteer their time and talents for “social good.”
One of the longest-running of these is On-call Scientists, an initiative of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) that connects human rights organizations with pro bono scientists across all fields — life, physical, behavioral, and …

In a recent report on the patterns of tree species richness in eastern and western North America, Marks et al. (2016) claimed to have identified an operational indicator of environmental harshness (maximum tree height) and concluded that environmental stressors that limit tree height also act as ecological filters on species richness. Marks et al. (2017) attributed the positive association between species richness and maximum tree height to both the direct effects of environmental harshness on species richness and the indirect effects of environmental harshness on species richness as mediated by maximum tree height.
This finding overlooked the fact that many …

A Reliable And Efficient Wireless Sensor Network System For Water Quality Monitoring, Dung Nguyen, Phu Huu Phung
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are strongly useful to monitor physical and environmental conditions to provide realtime information for improving environment quality. However, deploying a WSN in a physical environment faces several critical challenges such as high energy consumption, and data loss.In this work, we have proposed a reliable and efficient environmental monitoring system in ponds using wireless sensor network and cellular communication technologies. We have designed a hardware and software ecosystem that can limit the data loss yet save the energy consumption of nodes. A lightweight protocol acknowledges data transmission among the nodes. Data are transmitted to the cloud using …

On-Chip Training Of Memristor Crossbar Based Multi-Layer Neural Networks, Raqibul Hasan, Tarek M. Taha, Christopher Yakopcic
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Memristor crossbar arrays carry out multiply-add operations in parallel in the analog domain, and so can enable neuromorphic systems with high throughput at low energy and area consumption. On-chip training of these systems have the significant advantage of being able to get around device variability and faults. This paper presents on-chip training circuits for multi-layer neural networks implemented using a single crossbar per layer and two memristors per synapse. Using two memristors per synapse provides double the synaptic weight precision when compared to a design that uses only one memristor per synapse. Proposed on-chip training system utilizes the back propagation …

Geology Faculty Publications
Centennial‐scale, high‐resolution records of atmospheric dust conditions are rare in the arid and semiarid regions of central Asia, limiting our understanding of the regional climate and environmental changes and their potential driving forces. In this paper, we present an annually resolved atmospheric dust record covering the period of 1810–2004 A.D., reconstructed from an ice core retrieved at 4512 m above sea level from the Miaoergou Glacier in the eastern Tien Shan. The time series of dust flux for the past 195 years shows three periods of relatively low values (i.e., 1810–1829 A.D., 1863–1940 A.D., and 1979–2004 A.D.) and two periods …

Review Of Optical Detection Of Single Molecules Beyond The Diffraction And Diffusion Limit Using Plasmonic Nanostructures, Farzia Karim, Todd B. Smith, Chenglong Zhao
Physics Faculty Publications
Single-molecule detection has become a unique and indispensable tool for the study of molecular motions and interactions at the single-molecule level. Unlike ensemble measurement where the information is averaged, single-molecule analysis yields invaluable information on both the individual molecular properties and their microenvironment. Among the various technologies for the detection of single molecules, the detection with optical methods has many advantages in terms of its high sensitivity, electrical passiveness, and robustness. The recent advances in the engineering of either the excitation light or the solution of the molecules have paved the way for enhanced single-molecule detection. We present recent developments …

Cohen Reals And The Sequential Order Of Groups, Alexander Shibakov
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
We show that adding uncountably many Cohen reals to a model of diamond results in a model with no countable sequential group with an intermediate sequential order. The same model has an uncountable group of sequential order 2. We also discuss related questions.
On A Construction Of Some Class Of Metric Spaces, Dariusz Bugajewski
On A Construction Of Some Class Of Metric Spaces, Dariusz Bugajewski
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
In this talk we are going to describe Sz´az’s construction of some class of metric spaces. Most of all we will analyze topological properties of metric spaces obtained by using Sz´az’s construction. In particular, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for completeness of metric spaces obtained in this way. Moreover, we will discuss the relation between Sz´az’s construction and the “linking construction”. A particular attention will be drawn to the “floor” metric, the analysis of which provides some interesting observations.

On Di-Injective T0-Quasi-Metric Spaces, Collins Amburo Agyingi
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
We prove that every q-hyperconvex T0-quasi-metric space (X, d) is di-injective without appealing to Zorn’s lemma. We also demonstrate that QX as constructed by Kemajou et al. and Q(X) (the space of all Katˇetov function pairs on X) are di-injective. Moreover we prove that di-injective T0-quasi-metric spaces do not contain proper essential extensions. Among other results, we state a number of ways in which the the di-injective envelope of a T0-quasi-metric space can be characterized.
Disjoint Infinity Borel Functions, Daniel Hathaway
Disjoint Infinity Borel Functions, Daniel Hathaway
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
Consider the statement that every uncountable set of reals can be surjected onto R by a Borel function. This is implied by the statement that every uncountable set of reals has a perfect subset. It is also implied by a new statement D which we will discuss: for each real a there is a Borel function fa : RtoR and for each function g : RtoR there is a countable set G(g) of reals such that the following is true: for each a in R and for each function g : R to R, if fa is disjoint …
Revelation Of Nano Topology In Cech Rough Closure Spaces, V. Antonysamy, Llellis Thivagar, Arockia Dasan
Revelation Of Nano Topology In Cech Rough Closure Spaces, V. Antonysamy, Llellis Thivagar, Arockia Dasan
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
The concept of Cech closure space was initiated and developed by E. Cech in 1966. Henceforth many more research scholars set their minds in this theory and developed it to a new height. Pawlak.Z derived and gave shape to Rough set theory in terms of approximation using equivalence relation known as indiscernibility relation. Further Lellis Thivagar enhanced rough set theory into a topology, called Nano Topology, which has at most five elements in it and he also extended this into multi granular nano topology. The purpose of this paper is to derive Nano topology in terms of Cech rough closure …

This talk is based on a joint work by T. A. Edwards, J. E. Joseph, M. H. Kwack and B. M. P. Nayar that apperared in the Journal of Advanced studies in Topology, Vol. 5 (4), 2014), 8 - 15. B
An adherence dominator on a topological space X is a function π from the collection of filterbases on X to the family of closed subsets of X satisfying A(Ω) ⊆ π(Ω) where A(Ω) is the adherence of Ω. The notations π(Ω) and A(Ω) are used for the values of the functions π and A and π(Ω) =⋂_Ω π F= …
Totally Geodesic Surfaces In Arithmetic Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds, Benjamin Linowitz, Jeffrey S. Meyer
Totally Geodesic Surfaces In Arithmetic Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds, Benjamin Linowitz, Jeffrey S. Meyer
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
In this talk we will discuss some recent work on the problem of determining the extent to which the geometry of an arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifold M is determined by the geometric genus spectrum of M (i.e., the set of isometry classes of finite area, properly immersed, totally geodesic surfaces of M, considered up to free homotopy). In particular, we will give bounds on the totally geodesic 2-systole, construct infinitely many incommensurable manifolds with the same initial geometric genus spectrum and analyze the growth of the genera of minimal surfaces across commensurability classes. These results have applications to the study of …
Sequential Order Of Compact Scattered Spaces, Alan Dow
Sequential Order Of Compact Scattered Spaces, Alan Dow
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
A space is sequential if the closure of set can be obtained by iteratively adding limits of converging sequences. The sequential order of a space is a measure of how many iterations are required. A space is scattered if every non-empty set has a relative isolated point. It is not known if it is consistent that there is a countable (or finite) upper bound on the sequential order of a compact sequential space. We consider the properties of compact scattered spaces with infinite sequential order.
On The Chogoshvili Homology Theory Of Continuous Maps Of Compact Spaces, Anzor Beridze, Vladimer Baladze
On The Chogoshvili Homology Theory Of Continuous Maps Of Compact Spaces, Anzor Beridze, Vladimer Baladze
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
In this paper an exact homology functor from the category MorC of continuous maps of compact Hausdorff spaces to the category LES of long exact sequences of abelian groups is defined (cf. [2], [3], [5]). This functor is an extension of the Hu homology theory, which is uniquely defined on the category of continuous maps of finite CW complexes and is constructed without the relative homology groups [9]. To define the given homology functor we use the Chogoshvili construction of projective homology theory [7], [8]. For each continuous map f:X → Y of compact spaces, using the notion of …

Some New Completeness Properties In Topological Spaces, Cetin Vural, Süleyman Önal
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
One of the most widely known completeness property is the completeness of metric spaces and the other one being of a topological space in the sense of Cech. It is well known that a metrizable space X is completely metrizable if and only if X is Cech-complete. One of the generalisations of completeness of metric spaces is subcompactness. It has been established that, for metrizable spaces, subcompactness is equivalent to Cech-completeness. Also the concept of domain representability can be considered as a completeness property. In [1], Bennett and Lutzer proved that Cech-complete spaces are domain representable. They also proved, in …
Hausdorff Dimension Of Kuperberg Minimal Sets, Daniel Ingbretson
Hausdorff Dimension Of Kuperberg Minimal Sets, Daniel Ingbretson
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
The Seifert conjecture was answered negatively in 1994 by Kuperberg who constructed a smooth aperiodic flow on a three-manifold. This construction was later found to contain a minimal set with a complicated topology. The minimal set is embedded as a lamination by surfaces with a Cantor transversal of Lebesgue measure zero. In this talk we will discuss the pseudogroup dynamics on the transversal, the induced symbolic dynamics, and the Hausdorff dimension of the Cantor set.
