The acetone extract of the aerial parts of Sideritis caesarea Duman, Aytaç & Başer (Lamiaceae) afforded the flavonoids penduletin (1) and apigenin (2) and 6 glycosylated flavonoids, 4'-O-methyl-isoscutellarein-7-O-[6'''-O-acetyl-\beta-D-allopyranosyl- (1 \to 2)]-6\"-O-acetyl-\beta -D-glucopyranoside (3), 4'-O-methylhypolaetin- 7-O-[6'''-O-acetyl-\beta -D-allopyranosyl-(1 \to 2)]-6\"-O-acetyl-\beta- D-glucopyranoside (4), isoscutellarein-7-O-[6'''-O-acetyl-\beta- D-allopyranosyl-(1 \to 2)]-6\"-O-acetyl-\beta -D-glucopyranoside (5), isoscutellarein-7-O-[6'''-O-acetyl-\beta -D-allopyranosyl-(1 \to 2)]- \beta-D-glucopyranoside (6), 4'-O-methylhypolaetin-7-O- [6'''-O-acetyl-\beta -D-allopyranosyl-(1 \to 2)]-\beta-D- glucopyranoside (7), and hypolaetin-7-O-[6'''-O-acetyl-\beta- D-allopyranosyl-(1 \to 2)]-\beta -D-glucopyranoside (8). The hexane and dichloromethane extracts, obtained by re-extraction of the methanol extract of Salvia fruticosa Mill., afforded 7 diterpenoids (carnosol, carnosic acid, carnosic acid 12-methyl ether, rosmadial, isorosmanol, ferruginol, and manool), 4 triterpenoids (\alpha -amyryltetracosanoate, oleanolic acid, ursolic acid, and erythrodiol), a steroid (3-acetylsitosterol), and a flavone (salvigenin). The galls (apples) of the collected plant were separately extracted with hexane to afford fatty acids composed mainly of oleic acid (29\%), palmitoleic acid (29\%), and stearic acid (23.20\%), which exhibited high anticholinesterase activity, particularly against BChE. Two iridoid glycosides, ixoroside (1) and nepetanudoside B (2); 1 phenylpropanoid glycoside, coniferine (3); 2 flavone glycosides, apigenin 7-O-glucuronide (4) and apigenin 7-O-glucopyranoside (5); 2 triterpenes, oleanolic acid (6) and ursolic acid (7); and 1 sterol, \beta-sitosterol (8), were isolated from the aerial parts of Nepeta heliotropifolia Lam. (Lamiaceae). Their structures were identified by means of spectroscopic methods (1D- and 2D-NMR, UV, and EIMS).

An HPLC-ESI/MS method that enables fast detection and identification of iridoid glycosides is described. Eleven iridoid glycosides known to occur in the genus Lamium-lamalbide, sesamoside, 6-\beta-OH ipolamiide, shanzhiside methyl ester, dehydropenstemoside, barlerin (= 8-O-acetylshanzhiside methyl ester), 6-O-syringyl-8-O- acetylshanzhiside methyl ester, lamerioside, lamiide, eriobioside, and ipolamiide, were identified by means of their retention time and ESI/MS data. This method was successfully applied to the identification of the iridoid composition of the n-butanol extracts of Lamium eriocephalum Bentham subsp. eriocephalum, L. garganicum L. subsp. pulchrum R. A long chain ketone (crassifone), a pentacyclic triterpenoid coupled with fatty acid moiety (crassifoate), and an acyclic diterpenoid (crassifol) have been isolated from the ethanol soluble part of Nepeta crassifolia (Lamiaceae) collected from Kangavar, Iran. Structures of all the metabolites were elucidated with the aid of spectroscopic techniques, including 2D NMR experiments.

Phytochemical investigations on the above-ground parts of Lamium garganicum subsp. laevigatum resulted in the isolation of 7 iridoid glucosides: shanzhiside methyl ester (1), barlerin (8-O-acetylshanzhiside methyl ester) (2), 6-O-syringyl-8-O-acetylshanzhiside methyl ester (3), 6\beta-hydroxyipolamiide (4), lamalbide (5), dehydropenstemoside (6), and sesamoside (7). The structure of the iridoids was elucidated by spectroscopic (UV, IR, 1D- and 2D-NMR, and ESI-MS) evidence.

Three new diterpenoids, piliferol (2\alpha, 20-dihydroxy-12-oxo- abieta-9(11),13-dien-8,20-ether) (1), salvipiliferol (2\alpha, 10\beta -dihydroxy-12-oxo-norabieta-9(11),13-dien) (2), and piliferalactone (2\alpha ,8-dihydroxy-12-oxo-abieta-9(11),13-dien-20-oic acid-8,20-lactone) (3), together with 7 known compounds, ursolic acid, oleanolic acid, betulinic acid, \alpha -amyrin, lupeol, \beta -sitosterol, and pectolinarigenin, have been isolated from the aerial parts of an endemic Salvia species, S. pilifera. Their structures were elucidated by spectral (UV, IR, 1D-, and 2D-NMR, and HRMS) methods.

The composition of the essential oil of Satureja cuneifolia Ten. cultivated in Konya, Turkey, was investigated by capillary GC-MS. The compounds were characterized by comparison with library searches. Six main compounds were identified. Carvacrol was the dominant component, comprising 59.28% of the essential oil. The oil also contained 15.72% thymol, 9.69% p-cymene, 4.16% \gamma -terpinene, 1.70% linalool and 1.25% borneol. The antibacterial activity of the essential oil of S. cuneifolia and its components was determined by a semiquantative disc-diffusion method, and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined based on a micro-well dilution method against strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus …

An iridoid glucoside, lamiide (1); 4 phenylethanoid glycosides, acteoside (2), \beta-OH acteoside (3), leucosceptoside A (4) and samioside (5); a caffeic acid ester, chlorogenic acid (6); 2 flavone glucosides, luteolin-7-O-glucopyranoside (7) and chrysoeriol-7-O-glucopyranoside (8); and a flavanone aglycone, naringenin (9), were isolated from the aerial parts of Phlomis syriaca. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by means of spectroscopic (UV, IR, 1D- and 2D-NMR, and FAB-MS) methods. Free radical scavenging activity of the isolated compounds was determined using the radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), spectroscopically.

Five iridoid glycosides, lamiide, ipolamiide, ipolamiidoside, 6\beta-hydroxyipolamiide, and 5-hydroxy-8-epi-loganin; 5 flavonoid glycosides, apigenin 7-O-\beta-glucopyranoside, luteolin 5-O-\beta- glucopyranoside, isorhamnetin 3-O-rutinoside, quercetin 3-O-rutinoside, and apigenin 7-O-(6''-O-trans-p-coumaroyl) \beta-glucopyranoside; and a phenylethanoid glycoside, acteoside (= verbascoside), were isolated from the aerial parts of Wiedemannia orientalis (Lamiaceae). From the roots of Salvia blepharochlaena Hedge and Hub. Mor. 4 triterpenoids, 4 steroids, 6 diterpenoids, and an aromatic ester were isolated. The structures of these compounds were established by spectroscopic methods. Formosanolide was isolated for the first time from the genus Salvia.

Some kaurane diterpenoids were isolated from 3 species of the genus Sideritis (Lamiaceae) growing in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Sideritis libanotica subsp. libanotica contained siderol 2 and sideridiol 3. Sideritis erythrantha var. erythrantha yielded sideridiol 3. Sideritis perfoliata gave siderol 2, sideridiol 3 and sideritriol 4. The products are known as they occur in another species of Sideritis growing in Italy and in other species growing also in Turkey. The products are isolated for the first time from these 3 species. The taxonomic significance of these results is discussed.

From the overground parts of Phlomis angustissima, a new phenylethanoid triglycoside, \beta-(3-hydroxy,4-methoxyphenyl)ethyl- O-[\beta -xylopyranosyl(1 \to 2)-\alpha -rhamnopyranosyl-(1 \to 3)] -O-4-O-feruloyl-\beta -glucopyranoside, named phlinoside F, was isolated along with the known compounds alyssonoside, samioside, lamiide, auroside, naringenin, and syringaresinol-4-O-\beta -D-glucopyranoside. The structure of the new glycoside was elucidated by spectroscopic methods.

A lignan glycoside, syringaresinol-4',4''-O-di-\beta -D-glucopyranoside (1) (=liriodendrin), 4 phenylethanoid glycosides, acteoside (2), isoacteoside (3), forsythoside B (4) and leucosceptoside B (5), a caffeic acid ester, chlorogenic acid (6) and 2 iridoid glucosides, lamiide (7) and auroside (8), were isolated from the methanolic extracts of the aerial parts of Phlomis kotschyana along with an acetophenone glycoside, 4-hydroxyacetophenone 4-O-[6'-O-\beta -D-apiofuranosyl]-\beta -D-glucopyranoside (9). The structures of the isolated compounds were identified on the basis of spectroscopic (UV, IR, 1D- and 2D-NMR, and FAB-MS) methods.

From the aerial parts of Phlomis samia an iridoid glucoside, shanzhiside methylester (1), and three phenylethanoid glycosides, martynoside (2), 4''-O-acetylmartynoside (3) and samioside (4), were isolated. From the overground parts of P. monocephala two iridoid glucosides, lamiide (5) and ipolamiide (6), as well as three phenylethanoid glycosides, verbascoside (= acteoside) (7), forsythoside B (8), alyssonoside (9), and one lignan glucoside, syringaresinol 4'-O-\beta -D-glucopyranoside (10), were isolated. Phytochemical investigations on the aerial parts of Phlomis samia resulted in the isolation of a simple phenolic glucoside, 2,6-dimethoxy-4-hydroxyphenol-1-O-\beta -D-glucopyranoside (1); a megastigmane glucoside, phlomuroside (=3-hydroxy-5,6-epoxy-\beta -ionol-9-O-\beta -D-glucopyranoside) (2); and a nucleotide glycoside, uridine (3). From the aerial parts of P. carica, the same phenolic glucoside, 2,6-dimethoxy-4-hydroxyphenol-1-O-\beta -D-glucopyranoside (1); as well as an acetophenon glucoside, picein (4); and 2 monoterpenoid glucosides, - betulalbuside A (5) and 1-hydroxylinaloyl-6-O-\beta -D-glucopyranoside (6) - were isolated and identified. From the aerial parts of Phlomis integrifolia Hub.-Mor. (Lamiaceae) were isolated a neolignan glucoside, dehyrodiconiferyl alcohol-4-O-\beta -D-glucopyranoside (1), an ester flavone glycoside, chrysoeriol 7-O-(3''-O-trans-p-coumaroyl)-\beta -D-glucopyranoside (2), four phenylethanoid glycosides, forsythoside B (3), verbascoside (=acteoside) (4), leucosceptoside A (5) and martynoside (6) along with an iridoid glucoside, lamiide (7). The structure elucidation of the isolated compounds was carried out by spectroscopic (UV, IR, 1D- and 2D-NMR) methods. The isolation of neolignan glucoside dehyrodiconiferyl alcohol-4-O-\beta -D-glucopyranoside (1) is reported for the first time from a Phlomis species as well as for the family Lamiaceae.

From the aerial parts of Scutellaria galericulata L., four phenylethanoid glycosides, 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-ethyl-(6-O-caffeoyl)-\beta -D-glucopyranoside (1), calceolarioside B (2), osmanthuside E (3) and martynoside (4), were isolated. The structure elucidations of the isolated compounds were performed by spectroscopic (UV, IR, ESI-MS, 1D- and 2D-NMR) methods. Compounds 1-4 demonstrated scavenging properties toward the 1,1-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical in TLC autographic assays.

From the aerial parts of Phlomis grandiflora var. fimbrilligera, two iridoid glucosides, 8-epi-loganin (1) and auroside (2), together with five phenylethanoid glycosides, forsythoside B (3), alyssonoside (4), verbascoside (5), hattushoside (6) and phlomisethanoside (7), were isolated. Iridoid glucosides auroside (2) and lamiide (8) and phenylethanoid glycosides, forsythoside B (3), alyssonoside (4), and verbascoside (5) as well as a lignan glucoside, syringaresinol-4 ' -O-\beta -D-glucoside (9), were characterized from the overground parts of P. fruticosa. The structures of the isolates were elucidated by means of one and two dimensional (COSY, HSQC and HMBC) NMR techniques and ESI MS.

From the aerial parts of {\it Teucrium alyssifolium} in addition to previously obtained {\it neo-}clerodane diterpenoids, a new flavanone alysifolinone and three flavones cirsiliol, cirsilineol and luteolin-6,7,3', 4'-tetramethyl ether, were isolated. The structure of the compounds was established by spectral data, and by TLC comparison for the known compounds. Keywords: Teucrium alyssifolium, Lamiaceae, flavanone, alysifolinone, flovones.
