Impact Of The Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Plant In Warsaw On Air Quality, Robert Oleniacz
Impact Of The Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Plant In Warsaw On Air Quality, Robert Oleniacz
Robert Oleniacz
The only Polish municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerator has been operating within the Municipal Solid Waste Disposal Plant in Warsaw since 2000. In the paper selected results of the air quality impact assessment for this incinerator during an operating period of one year (2008) are presented. With respect to the incinerated waste amounts and emission levels, the analysed period can be considered typical for this facility. Assessment of the air quality impact was carried out by assessing air pollutant emissions in reference to the applicable emission limit values and by modeling atmospheric dispersion of these pollutants. It has been found …

RQM information system takes into account various non-conservative pollution parameters like Total Dissolved solids (TDS), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and obtains the concentration of such parameters along the river stretch. The system incorporates various mathematical models for computation of velocity variation along the river stretch, flow rate computation, and crosssectional area computation and finally uses a water quality dispersion model to compute the concentration of vivid pollutants at various points in the river stretch to predict the quality of river.

Quantifying The Basal Conditions Of A Mountain Glacier Using A Targeted Full-Waveform Inversion: Bench Glacier, Alaska, Usa, E. Babcock, J. Bradford
John H. Bradford
Glacier dynamics are inextricably linked to the basal conditions of glaciers. Seismic reflection methods can image the glacier bed under certain conditions. However, where a seismically thin layer of material is present at the bed, traditional analyses may fail to fully characterize bed properties. We use a targeted full-waveform inversion algorithm to quantify the basal-layer parameters of a mountain glacier: thickness (d), P-wave velocity (α) and density (ρ). We simultaneously invert for the seismic quality factor (Q) of the bulk glacier ice. The inversion seeks to minimize the difference between the data and a one-dimensional reflectivity algorithm using a gradient-based …

In cyberspace attackers enjoy an advantage over defenders, which has popularized the concept of “active cyber defense”— offensive actions intended to punish or deter the adversary. This article argues active cyber defense is not a practical course of action to obtain tactical and strategic objectives. Instead, “aggressive cyber defense,” a proactive security solution, is a more appropriate option.
Measuring Privacy Disclosures In Url Query Strings, Andrew G. West, Adam J. Aviv
Measuring Privacy Disclosures In Url Query Strings, Andrew G. West, Adam J. Aviv
Andrew G. West
Publicly posted URLs may contain a wealth of information about the identities and activities of the users who share them. URLs often utilize query strings (i.e., key-value pairs appended to the URL path) as a means to pass session parameters and form data. While often benign and necessary to render the web page, query strings sometimes contain tracking mechanisms, user names, email addresses, and other information that users may not wish to publicly reveal. In isolation this is not particularly problematic, but the growth of Web 2.0 platforms such as social networks and micro-blogging means URLs (often copy-pasted from web …
Intelligent Firefly Algorithm For Global Optimization, Seif-Eddeen K. Fateen, Adrián Bonilla-Petriciolet
Intelligent Firefly Algorithm For Global Optimization, Seif-Eddeen K. Fateen, Adrián Bonilla-Petriciolet
Seif-Eddeen K Fateen
Intelligent firefly algorithm (IFA) is a novel global optimization algorithm that aims to improve the performance of the firefly algorithm (FA), whichwas inspired by the flashing communication signals among firefly swarms. This chapter introduces the IFA modification and evaluates its performance in comparison with the original algorithm in twenty multi-dimensional benchmark problems. The results of those numerical experiments show that IFA outperformed FA in terms of reliability and effectiveness in all tested benchmark problems. In some cases, the global minimum could not have been successfully identified via the firefly algorithm, except with the proposed modification for FA.

Zoran Kilibarda
A study of aerial photographs from the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore (adjacent to Michigan City, Indiana, United States of America) revealed that from 1938 to 2008 the Lakeshore’s Mount Baldy dune advanced inland 135 m, at an average rate of 1.9 m/year, while the beach north of the dune receded 98 m, at an average rate of 1.4 m/year. The highest rates of Mount Baldy dune movement (3.3 m/year) occurred concurrently (1965–1973) with highest rates of beach erosion (7.2 m/year). The lowest rates of Mount Baldy dune movement (0.3 m/year) occurred in 1958–1965 period. The highest rates of beach accretion …

Chatter: Classifying Malware Families Using System Event Ordering, Aziz Mohaisen, Andrew G. West, Allison Mankin, Omar Alrawi
Andrew G. West
Using runtime execution artifacts to identify malware and its associated "family" is an established technique in the security domain. Many papers in the literature rely on explicit features derived from network, file system, or registry interaction. While effective, use of these fine-granularity data points makes these techniques computationally expensive. Moreover, the signatures and heuristics this analysis produces are often circumvented by subsequent malware authors.
To this end we propose CHATTER, a system that is concerned only with the order in which high-level system events take place. Individual events are mapped onto an alphabet and execution traces are captured via terse …

This chapter presents the model calculation results of the level of concentration of air pollutants emitted during works related to the preparation of the drilling pad for the shale gas exploration. The most significant emission sources located in the drilling pad, including rig access roads, paved and unpaved, were analyzed. The emission field was defined by the parameterization of various sources/processes, taking into account the technical, technological, organizational and environmental conditions. The calculations of the pollutants dispersion in the air were carried out using the Gaussian reference model. The results of numerical calculations showed that the only substance likely to …

In this study are presented the results of the assessment of the impact of grid resolution on the results of computational modeling of the dispersion of air pollutants. Calculations were performed using Gaussian, non-stationary puff model CALPUFF. Four different grids resolution were analyzed. Networks were established on the basis of SRTM3 terrain and land cover classes of CLC, 2006. Analysis of results of spatial distribution of concentrations of air pollutants obtained in a regular computing grid was performed using statistical indicators recommended by the U.S. EPA. The study shows the applicability of particular computational grids in the system modeling transport …

Meteorologiczne Determinanty Jakości Powietrza W Krakowie, Robert Oleniacz, Marek Bogacki, Mateusz Rzeszutek, Agata Kot
Robert Oleniacz
Air quality in the Agglomeration of Krakow is determined by many factors, which include, among others, unfavorable location and the resulting meteorological conditions unfavorable for self-cleaning of ambient air. The paper presents a few examples illustrating the impact of selected meteorological factors on some pollutant concentrations in the air in Krakow. Among these, special attention was paid to the ambient air temperature (indirectly influencing the level of air emissions from the municipal sector in the winter season) as well as the wind speed and the mixing layer height. On the basis performed analyzes were to draw conclusions on meteorological restrictions …

This work provides mathematical formulas and algorithm in order to calculate the derivatives that being necessary to perform Steepest Descent models to make T1 and T2 FLSs much more accessible to FLS modelers. It provides derivative computations that are applied on different kind of MFs, and some computations which are then clarified for specific MFs. We have learned how to model T1 FLSs when a set of training data is available and provided an application to derive the Steepest Descent models that depend on trigonometric function (SDTFM). This work, also focused on an interval type-2 non-singleton type-2 FLS (IT2 NS-T2 …

Fuzzy Mathematical Models For The Analysis Of Fuzzy Systems With Application To Liver Disorders, R.W. W. Hndoosh
R. W. Hndoosh
The main objective of this model is to focus on how to use the model of fuzzy system to solve fuzzy mathematics problems. Some mathematical models based on fuzzy set theory, fuzzy systems and neural network techniques seem very well suited for typical technical problems. We have proposed an extension model of a fuzzy system to N-dimension, using Mamdani's minimum implication, the minimum inference system, and the singleton fuzzifier with the center average defuzzifier. Here construct two different models namely a fuzzy inference system and an adaptive fuzzy system using neural network. We have extended the theorem for accuracy of …

One of the measures allowing to reduce the emissions of pollutants into the air from the housing sector is decrease in the energy demand, which can be most easily achieved by thermal renovations. This paper analyses some possible variants of thermomodernization of a residential building typical for single-family housing construction of the 1970s and 1980s in Poland (replacement of window frames, insulation of external walls, flat roof insulation and all of the above-mentioned measures together with heating system replacement). Each of the considered variants was assessed in respect to the heat demand and emission of basic pollutants into the air. …

The article assesses to what extent reduced the impact on air quality of a complex of detached coal-fired houses as a result of some thermal renovation works which lowered the fuel consumption and reduced emissions of pollutants into the air. The assessment was done on the basis of results of dispersion modelling for selected substances (SO2, NO2, CO, PM10, B(a)P and PCDD/F) in the ambient air with the use of CALMET/CALPUFF models. The calculation process encompassed preparation of the data on spatial features of the area, making a three-dimensional grid of meteorological data, definition of geometrical parameters of substitute emitters …

and detection of lung cancer data. This model depends on a generic model of a fuzzy perceptron, which can be used to derive a neural fuzzy system for specific domains. The multi neuron-fuzzy classification (Multi-NFClass) model proposed that uses input, hidden layers, output, and subclasses that have a multitude in each class. This model derives fuzzy rules to classify patterns into a number of crisp classes. Firstly, an attempt is made to describe fuzzy if–then rules, and construction of the fuzzy if–then rule, that are determined by the simple steps when its antecedent fuzzy sets are specified by genetic operations, …
Parameter Identification For Ordinary And Delay Differential Equations By Using Flat Inputs, René Schenkendorf, Michael Mangold
Parameter Identification For Ordinary And Delay Differential Equations By Using Flat Inputs, René Schenkendorf, Michael Mangold
René Schenkendorf
The concept of differential flatness has been widely used for nonlinear controller design. In this contribution, it is shown that flatness may also be a very useful property for parameter identification. An identification method based on flat inputs is introduced. The treatment of noisy measurements and the extension of the method to delay differential equations are discussed. The method is illustrated by two case studies: the well-known FitzHugh-Nagumo equations and a virus replication model with delays.

Simulating Burr Type Vii Distributions Through The Method Of L-Moments And L-Correlations, Mohan D. Pant, Todd C. Headrick
Mohan Dev Pant
Burr Type VII, a one-parameter non-normal distribution, is among the less studied distributions, especially, in the contexts of statistical modeling and simulation studies. The main purpose of this study is to introduce a methodology for simulating univariate and multivariate Burr Type VII distributions through the method of L-moments and L-correlations. The methodology can be applied in statistical modeling of events in a variety of applied mathematical contexts and Monte Carlo simulation studies. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate that L-moment-based Burr Type VII distributions are superior to their conventional moment-based analogs in terms of distribution fitting and estimation. Simulation results …

DePaul University Library will share its lessons learned and recommendations for hosted CONTENTdm 6 administrators wishing to customize CONTENTdm in a way that strikes the right balance between default CONTENTdm sites and sites that stand out and better serve our unique audiences. The DePaul University Library has learned many lessons from customizing its hosted instance of CONTENTdm 6, including the use of jQuery to add interface enhancements and remove some native CONTENTdm features. Unfortunately, this did not prove a long-term solution due to some limitations of CONTENTdm’s built-in customization tools, leading to content management issues and bugs that were hard …

Malicious webpages are a prevalent and severe threat in the Internet security landscape. This fact has motivated numerous static and dynamic techniques to alleviate such threats. Building on this existing literature, this work introduces the design and evaluation of ADAM, a system that uses machine-learning over network metadata derived from the sandboxed execution of webpage content. ADAM aims to detect malicious webpages and identify the nature of those vulnerabilities using a simple set of features. Machine-trained models are not novel in this problem space. Instead, it is the dynamic network artifacts (and their subsequent feature representations) collected during rendering that …

Mathematical Structure Of Fuzzy Modeling Of Medical Diagnoses By Using Clustering Models, R.W. W. Hndoosh
R. W. Hndoosh
An Adaptive-Network-based Fuzzy Inference System ANFIS with different techniques of clustering is successfully developed to solve one of the problems of medical diagnoses, because it has the advantage of powerful modeling ability. In this paper, we propose the generation of an adaptive neuro-Fuzzy Inference System model using different clustering models such as a subtractive fuzzy clustering (SFC) model and a fuzzy c-mean clustering (FCM) model in the Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy model for selecting the hidden node centers. An experimental result on datasets of medical diagnoses shows the proposed model with two models of clustering (ANFIS-SFC & ANFIS-FCM) while comparing the …

We examine solutions to semilinear wave equations on black hole backgrounds and give a proof of an analog of the Strauss conjecture on the Schwarzschild and Kerr, with small angular momentum, black hole backgrounds. The key estimates are a class of weighted Strichartz estimates, which are used near infinity where the metrics can be viewed as small perturbations of the Minkowski metric, and a localized energy estimate on the black hole background, which handles the behavior in the remaining compact set.
