Direct Patterning Of Silanized-Biomolecules On Semiconductor Surfaces, Dorjderem Nyamjav, Richard C. Holz

A novel approach to pattern silanized-biomolecules directly onto glass (SiOx) substrates via Dip-Pen nanolithography (DPN) and microcontact printing (μCP) is presented. Subsequent hybridization reactions of DPN patterned silanized-DNA with its complementary strands provide “proof-of-concept” that the patterned oligonucleotides maintain their biological activities. The fabrication strategy does not require premodification of substrates and offers a cheap and robust way to immobilize molecules on electronically important semiconductor surfaces.

The flame retardancy and thermal stability of ammonium polyphosphate/tripentaerythritol (APP/TPE) intumescent flame retarded polystyrene composites (PS/IFR) combined with organically-modified layered inorganic materials (montmorillonite clay and zirconium phosphate), nanofiber (multiwall carbon nanotubs), nanoparticle (Fe2O3) and nickel catalyst were evaluated by cone calorimetry, microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Cone calorimetry revealed that a small substitution of IFR by most of these fillers (≤2%) imparted substantial improvement in flammability performance. The montmorillonite clay exhibited the highest efficiency in reducing the peak heat release rate of PS/IFR composite, while zirconium phosphate modified with C21H26 …

Oxidation of the heme-thiolate enzyme chloroperoxidase (CPO) from Caldariomyces fumago with peroxynitrite (PN) gave the Compound II intermediate, which was photo-oxidized with 365 nm light to give a reactive oxidizing species. Cryo-solvents at pH ≈ 6 were employed, and reactions were conducted at temperatures as low as − 50 °C. The activity of CPO as evaluated by the chlorodimedone assay was unaltered by treatment with PN or by production of the oxidizing transient and subsequent reaction with styrene. EPR spectra at 77 K gave the amount of ferric protein at each stage in the reaction sequence. The PN oxidation step …

The question of which semigroups have lower semimodular lattice of subsemigroups has been open since the early 1960s, when the corresponding question was answered for modularity and for upper semimodularity. We provide a characterization of such semigroups in the language of principal factors. Since it is easily seen (and has long been known) that semigroups for which Green's relation J is trivial have this property, a description in such terms is natural. In the case of periodic semigroups—a case that turns out to include all eventually regular semigroups—the characterization becomes quite explicit and yields interesting consequences. Energy efficiency is a major concern in modern high-performance computing system design. In the past few years, there has been mounting evidence that power usage limits system scale and computing density, and thus, ultimately system performance. The cationic ruthenium hydride complex [(η6-C6H6)(PCy3)(CO)RuH]+BF4 was found to be a highly regioselective catalyst for the oxidative C−H coupling reaction of aryl-substituted amides and unactivated alkenes to give o-alkenylamide products. The kinetic and spectroscopic analyses support a mechanism involving a rapid vinyl C−H activation followed by a rate-limiting C−C bond formation step.

Background: Screening tests for Trisomy 21 (T21), also known as Down syndrome, are routinely performed for the majority of pregnant women. However, current tests rely on either evaluating non-specific markers, which lead to false negative and false positive results, or on invasive tests, which while highly accurate, are expensive and carry a risk of fetal loss. We outline a novel, rapid, highly sensitive, and targeted approach to non-invasively detect fetal T21 using maternal plasma DNA.

Controlled motion of 180o and 360o domain walls along planar nanowires is presented. Standard Landau – Lifshitz micromagnetic modeling has been used to simulate the response of the domain walls to the application of an external magnetic field. A 180o wall is quickly and easily moved with the application of an applied. field along the axis of the wire but a 360odomain wall is stationary in the same case. Arabidopsis thaliana glyoxalase 2-1 (GLX2-1) exhibits extensive sequence similarity with GLX2 enzymes but is catalytically inactive with SLG, the GLX2 substrate. In an effort to identify residues essential for GLX2 activity, amino acid residues were altered at positions 219, 246, 248, 325, and 328 in GLX2-1 to be the same as those in catalytically active human GLX2. The resulting enzymes were overexpressed, purified, and characterized using metal analyses, fluorescence spectroscopy, and steady-state kinetics to evaluate how these residues affect metal binding, structure, and catalysis. Arterial spin labeling techniques can yield quantitative measures of perfusion by fitting a kinetic model to difference images (tagged-control). Because of the noisy nature of the difference images investigators typically average a large number of tagged versus control difference measurements over long periods of time. This averaging requires that the perfusion signal be at a steady state and not at the transitions between active and baseline states in order to quantitatively estimate activation induced perfusion. Today’s web applications are more collaborative and utilize standard and ubiquitous Internet protocols. We have earlier developed System on Mobile Devices (SyD) middleware to rapidly develop and deploy collaborative applications over heterogeneous and possibly mobile devices hosting web objects. We consider the class of multivariate distributions that gives the distribution of the sum of uncorrelated random variables by the product of their marginal distributions. This class is defined by a representation of the assumption of sub-independence, formulated previously in terms of the characteristic function and convolution, as a weaker assumption than independence for derivation of the distribution of the sum of random variables. The new representation is in terms of stochastic equivalence and the class of distributions is referred to as the summable uncorrelated marginals (SUM) distributions. Nanocomposites have been shown to significantly reduce the peak heat release rate, as measured by cone calorimetry, for many polymers but they typically have no effect on the oxygen index or the UL-94 classification. In this review, we will cover what is known about the processes by which nanocomposite formation may bring this about. Montmorillonite will be the focus in this paper but attention will also be devoted to other materials, including carbon nanotubes and layered double hydroxides. A boron-containing layered hydroxy salt (LHS), ZHTMDBB, was prepared and compounded with a highly flammable synthetic polymer, poly (methyl methacrylate) {PMMA}, via melt blending: the composite structure was intercalated with poor dispersion. The effect of this LHS on the flammability, thermal stability and degradation kinetics of PMMA was investigated via cone calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The addition of 3-10% by mass of ZHTMDBB to PMMA resulted in significant reduction of peak heat release rate (22-48%) of the polymer and improvements in thermal stability were observed in both air and nitrogen. The cationic ruthenium hydride complex [(η6-C6H6)(PCy3)(CO)RuH]+BF4 was found to be a highly regioselective catalyst for the ethylene dimerization reaction to give 2-butene products (TOF = 1910 h−1, >95% selectivity for 2-butenes). The dimerization of styrene exclusively produced the head-to-tail dimer (E)-PhCH(CH3)CH═CHPh at an initial turnover rate of 2300 h−1. A rapid and extensive H/D exchange between the vinyl hydrogens of styrene-d8 and 4-methoxystyrene was observed within 10 min without forming the dimer products at room temperature. The inverse …

In fMRI, brain images are not measured instantaneously and a volume of images can take two seconds to acquire at a low 64x64 resolution. Significant effort has been put forth on many fronts to decrease image acquisition time including parallel imaging. In parallel imaging, sub-sampled spatial frequency points are measured in parallel and combined to form a single image. Measurement time is decreased at the expense of increased image reconstruction difficulty and time. Domain walls in ferromagnetic nanowires are important for proposed devices in recording, logic, and sensing. The realization of such devices depends in part on the ability to quickly and accurately control the domain wall from creation until placement. Using micromagnetic computer simulation we demonstrate how a combination of externally applied magnetic fields is used to quickly inject, move, and accurately place multiple domain walls within a single wire for potential recording and logical operations. The use of a magnetic field component applied perpendicular to the principle domain wall driving field is found to be critical for increased speed and reliability. …

Treatment of [Mo(CO)3(NCMe)3] with bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm) and triphenylphosphine (PPh3) at 50 °C afforded mer-[Mo(CO)3(PPh3)(κ2-dppm)] (1) in 55% yield which has been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies and spectroscopic measurements. Compound 1 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P−1 with a = 10.3449(6), b = 11.1570(6), c = 17.8961(10) Å, β = 80.8400(10)°, Z = 2 and V = 1959.8(2) Å3.

Motivation: In order to construct gene regulatory networks of higher organisms from gene expression and promoter sequence data efficiently, we developed FastMEDUSA. In this parallelized version of the regulatory network-modeling tool MEDUSA, expression and sequence data are shared among a user-defined number of processors on a single multi-core machine or cluster. Our results show that FastMEDUSA allows a more efficient utilization of computational resources. While the determination of a regulatory network of brain tumor in Homo sapiens takes 12 days with MEDUSA, FastMEDUSA obtained the same results in 6 h by utilizing 100 processors. The syntheses of 12 stereochemically diverse polyhydroxyl aminocyclohexane (“aminocyclitols”) derivatives are described. These short syntheses require 2–5 steps from N-(2,4-cyclohexadien-1-yl)phthalimide, which is prepared in two steps from tricarbonyl(cyclohexadienyl)iron(1+). The relative stereochemistries of the aminocyclitols were assigned by 1H NMR spectroscopy as well as X-ray diffraction analysis.

Artificial defects such as notches and antinotches are often attached to magnetic nanowires to serve as trapping (pinning) sites for domain walls. The magnetic field necessary to release (depin) the trapped domain wall from the notch depends on the type, geometric shape, and dimensions of the defect but is typically quite large. Conversely we show here that for some notches and antinotches there exists a much smaller driving field for which a moving domain wall will travel past the defect without becoming trapped. The interaction of domain walls in a single ferromagnetic nanowire has been observed with micromagnetic simulation. Domain walls separating domains of opposite magnetization move towards each other when an external field is applied along the long axis of the wire resulting in a collision. The final magnetic state of the wire after the collision will contain either zero (domain wall annihilation) or two (domain wall conservation) domain walls. The interaction between a magnetic force microscope (MFM) tip and ferromagnetic films of Ni, Co90Fe10 and Py with in-plane magnetization has been investigated. The measured interaction, due to the magnetizing of the films by the MFM tip field, was determined by the phase shift of the cantilever response. The tip-film separation or lift height dependent phase shift was found to be independent of the saturation magnetization of the ferromagnetic film. This paper discusses the approaches to teaching linear equation solving that are embedded in a Standards-based mathematics curriculum (Connected Mathematics Program or CMP) and in a traditional mathematics curriculum (Glencoe Mathematics) in the United States. Overall, the CMP curriculum takes a functional approach to teaching equation solving, while Glencoe Mathematics takes a structural approach. The functional approach emphasizes the important ideas of change and variation in situations and contexts. It also emphasizes the representation of relationships between variables. The structural approach, on the other hand, requires students to work abstractly with symbols and follow procedures in a systematic way. …

Regioselective Formation Of Α-Vinylpyrroles From The Ruthenium-Catalyzed Coupling Reaction Of Pyrroles And Terminal Alkynes Involving C–H Bond Activation, Ruili Gao, Chae S. Yi

The cationic ruthenium catalyst Ru3(CO)12/NH4PF6 was found to be highly effective for the intermolecular coupling reaction of pyrroles and terminal alkynes to give gem-selective α-vinylpyrroles. The carbon isotope effect on the α-pyrrole carbon and the Hammett correlation from a series of para-substituted N-arylpyrroles (ρ = −0.90) indicate a rate-limiting C−C bond formation step of the coupling reaction.
