The purpose of this thesis was to create a non-traditional Advanced Mathematics course paired with Math XL® for School (MXL) for senior-level students with low ACT Math scores. The Advanced Math course was created with the purpose of helping students increase their ACT Math scores and preparing them for first-year college math, College Algebra. The course was taught at a private high school in Louisiana for the 2014-2015 school year and is attached to this thesis as an appendix. This thesis discusses the importance and benefits of subject acceleration for mathematically gifted students. The objective was to create an accelerated mathematics curriculum for mathematically gifted students by combining the Math 6 and Math 7 EngageNY curricula and adapting these curricula to meet the needs of my gifted students. This curriculum is to be implemented in a gifted classroom, which allows students to be on an accelerated path in mathematics. Literature clearly supports the use of data to support and drive school policy. Data can be immensely informative; however test scores are not the sole indicator of school effectiveness. To successfully implement a plan for data use, it is imperative to a provide climate of teacher buy-in and collaboration. Multiple sources of data should be considered collectively prior to making any judgment(s) about students, teachers, curriculum, or schools. Data use for effective decision-making is an on-going process that requires strategic planning and a long-term commitment.
