One of the goals of the 2011 International Year of Chemistry is to celebrate the contributions of women to science. A question that has been frequently asked in this regard is... Why is it necessary to highlight women in the "age of equality"? The reasons are varied but the facts are that many women scientists worked in obscurity throughout the 19th and even well into the 20th century, sometimes publishing anonymously to be heard. Bertram Strieb was born in 1938 and spent the first five years of his life in North Philadelphia, near 22nd and Venango. He then moved to West Oak Lane, where he lived from the time he was about 5 until he entered college at age 17. Among the elementary and high schools he attended were Rowen, Logan, Wagner Junior High, and Central High School. Strieb studied physics at the University of Pennsylvania on a Mayor's Scholarship and continued in graduate work at Penn, where he studied under world-renowned physicist Herbert Callen. The Golden Ratio has generally been revered as the most aesthetically pleasing relationship that exists between two numbers. The Fibonacci Sequence is a famous collection of integers occurring unusually often in nature, with many amazing properties, and is intimately related to the Golden Ratio. An intriguing puzzle (“The Vanishing Square”) will set the stage. Then we will examine the origins of both the Golden Ratio and the Fibonacci Sequence and discover how their histories are intertwined. But….does the Golden Ratio really live up to its reputation?
