Most of the soils are grey and brown solonized soils. The subsoils, to about 2 m, are calcareous sandy clays with limestone rubble, but there are three main surface variations: sandy surfaced, 5-30 cm deep, passing abruptly to the sandy clay subsoil with lime nodules. The Circle Valley sand and Scaddan sand are major types. Scaddan sand has a domed subsoil clay. Powdery calcareous sandy loam; and clay loam and clay with some lime in the subsoil, but less than in 1 and 2.

The Carlton Plains covers approximately 11,750 ha midway between Wyndham and Kununurra on the northern bank of the Ord River in the Shire of East Kimberley. The survey area is divided into two geomorphic units, the clay plains and the levee areas. Soils of the former generally belong to the Cununurra family of cracking clays while those of the levees are generally more variable and of medium texture.Samples of the major soils were collected for mechanical analysis and basic chemical analysis.Sodium chloride percentages and exchangeable sodium percentages are both high on the clay soils of the western plain. Location: East Chapman Research Station

Inoculated and lime pelleted seed was hand sown into 3m rows at 0.25 g/m. All the medics were inoculated with WSM 540 which may have been less effective with some of the M. littoralis and M. tornata varieties. The 1988 season was very good in terms of frequency and amount of rainfall which is reflected in the high seed yields compared to 1987.

The plots were hand sown at 2 g/m2 of inoculated and lime pelleted seed. The medics were inoculated with WSM540 which may have been ineffective on some of the M. littoralis and M. tornata varieties. The time taken to form ripe pods was monitored to gain some extra measure of maturity besides flowering time for comparing wide ranges of species. The ripening time involved was very similar over all the varieties, averaging out to 44 days after the flower opens. What appears to be a more important factor when considering maturity is the …

Half the trial site was cultivated to 30cm at the break of the season and the whole site was normally cultivated. Weeds were then sprayed with Roundup at 1 1/ha prior to seeding with an eight run cone seeder. The plots were kept weed free during the year by hand weeding. The root distribution was calculated from soil cores taken in 20 cm increments on 20 August. Aphid cortrol consisted of spraying every two weeks with Pirimor at 140 g/ha between July and October. Laser levelling demonstration areas at Vasse Research Station have improved surface drainage and reduced waterlogging, flooding and salt accumulation. Reseeding these laser treated areas has resulted in greater pasture productivity and stock carrying capacity. The overall cost of this exercise has to be met by increased animal productivity.

Permeability, conductivity, conductance and resistance are important parameters in the description of water movement in soils and plants. These terms are related, but not synonymous. Permeability is only a function of the flow pathgeometry of the medium, while conductivity also depends on the fluid involved. Conductance, in addition, takes the size of the medium into account. Resistance is simply the inverse ofconductance. By applying the definition of resistance, it isshown that Darcy's law and Ohm's law are equivalent. This site received a basal treatment of 1.5 L of simazine/ha prior to seeding. Due to a heavy stubble load lupin seed was dropped onto the surface and lightly incorporated.

High rates of Simazine were better tolerated by Gungurru 75A/260 and CE2/435. The highest rate of Brodal reduced yields in all varieties except Gungurru.

Trial 88EB27

This site was severely infested with aphids and bean mosaic virus such that the varieties Illyarrie and Danja had up to 60% plant death by anthesis. Other varieties were affected but to a lesser extent.
