Spatial Differentiation Of Heritage Trees In The Rapidly-Urbanizing City Of Shenzhen, China, Po Ying Lai, Cy Jim, Guang Da Tang, Wen Jun Hong, Hao Zhang

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

In China, heritage trees are actively surveyed and reported. Over 300 relevant published articles were reviewed to assess the contents, trends and geographical distributions of the investigations. The majority of the heritage trees studies in China were found in the eastern provinces and published within 2010–2014. Most studies reported surveys on all old trees. For studies focused on single species, Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) and Chinese Yew (Taxus chinensis) was most frequently reported. Unlike the champion tree registry in the US and other countries, the tree registry in China emphasized more on the tree age than the size. We then have …

Molecular Dynamics Simulation On Licl-H2o Interfacial Phenomenon For Liquid Desiccant Dehumidification, Xiaohui She, Yi Chen, Yuanhao Wang, Shifeng Wang, Yimo Luo

Faculty of Science & Technology (THEi)

In this paper, molecular dynamics simulation was conducted to analyze the air-solution interface phenomenon of LiCl-H2O for liquid desiccant air dehumidification. Density profiles of ions in liquid desiccant aqueous solutions were plotted along the z axis, and distribution preferences of ions on the air-solution interface were studied. Besides, vapor pressure profiles above the solution surface were plotted, and the saturated vapor pressure was predicted and compared with the empirical data. It was found that water density remained stable in the bulk, and there was a sharp decrease on the air-solution interface. For the ions (Li+ and Cl-), a density peak …

Reduction Of Ruviºn To Ruiii-Nh3 By Cysteine In Aqueous Solution, Qian Wang, Wai-Lun Man, William W. Y. Lam, Shek-Man Yiu, Man-Kit Tse, Tai‐Chu Lau

The reduction of metal nitride to ammonia is a key step in biological and chemical nitrogen fixation. We report herein the facile reduction of a ruthenium(VI) nitrido complex [(L)RuVI(N)(OH2)]+ (1, L = N,N′-bis(salicylidene)-o-cyclohexyldiamine dianion) to [(L)RuIII(NH3)(OH2)]+ by l-cysteine (Cys), an ubiquitous biological reductant, in aqueous solution. At pH 1.0–5.3, the reaction has the following stoichiometry: [(L)RuVI(N)(OH2)]+ + 3HSCH2CH(NH3)CO2 → [(L)RuIII(NH3)(OH2)]+ + 1.5(SCH2CH(NH3)CO2)2. Kinetic studies show that at pH 1 the reaction consists of two phases, while at pH 5 there are three distinct phases. For all phases the rate law is rate = k2[1][Cys]. Studies on the effects of acidity …

Mechanism Of Water Oxidation By Ferrate(Vi) At Ph 7 – 9., Gui Chen, William W. Y. Lam, Po‐Kam Lo, Wai‐Lun Man, Lingjing Chen, Kai‐Chung Lau, Tai‐Chu Lau Jan 2018

Mechanism Of Water Oxidation By Ferrate(Vi) At Ph 7 – 9., Gui Chen, William W. Y. Lam, Po‐Kam Lo, Wai‐Lun Man, Lingjing Chen, Kai‐Chung Lau, Tai‐Chu Lau

Faculty of Science & Technology (THEi)

The kinetics of water oxidation by K2FeO4 has been reinvestigated by UV/Vis spectrophotometry from pH 7–9 in 0.2 m phosphate buffer. The rate of reaction was found to be second‐order in both [FeO42−] and [H+]. These results are consistent with a proposed mechanism in which the first step involves the initial equilibrium protonation of FeO42− to give FeO3(OH)−, which then undergoes rate‐limiting O−O bond formation. Analysis of the O2 isotopic composition for the reaction in H218O suggests that the predominant pathway for water oxidation by ferrate is intramolecular O−O coupling. DFT calculations have also been performed, which support the proposed …

Quality Of Life In A “High-Rise Lawless Slum”: A Study Of The Kowloon Walled City, Prudencea Leung Kwok Lau, Lawrenceb Wai Chung Lai, Daniel Chi Wing Ho Jan 2018

Quality Of Life In A “High-Rise Lawless Slum”: A Study Of The Kowloon Walled City, Prudencea Leung Kwok Lau, Lawrenceb Wai Chung Lai, Daniel Chi Wing Ho

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

Informed by the ‘quality of life’ model with specific reference to Chinese culture, this article uses reliable and publicly available information seldom used in historical or heritage study to identify the designs of flats and builders of the “Kowloon Walled City” (hereafter the City) and reliable oral testimonies to refute some myths about the quality of life within it. This settlement has been notoriously misrepresented by some as a city of darkness that was razed from the face of the Earth before 1997 to fulfill a pre-war dream of the colonial government. This article confirms the view that this extremely …

Given the aging population in Hong Kong and the ever rising demand for emergency ambulance services, this study aimed to examine the effects of seasonality and weather on the demand for emergency ambulance services in Hong Kong. The feasibility of using time series models and selected weather factors to forecast average daily ambulance demand over a month was also assessed.

Evaluation Of Property Management Agent Performance : A Novel Empirical Model, Yung Yau, Daniel Chi Wing Ho Jan 2017

Evaluation Of Property Management Agent Performance : A Novel Empirical Model, Yung Yau, Daniel Chi Wing Ho

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

For many different reasons, property management agents (PMAs) are appointed for managing housing developments in both public and private housing sectors in many different cities. While third-party housing management eases the burdens of property owners and tenants in taking care of their properties, it may lead to agency problems. In fact, cases of mismanagement of multi-owned properties are common in Hong Kong and other Asian cities, leading to accelerated urban decay and augmented confrontations between property owners, users and PMAs. To promote better property management services, the performance of PMAs should be evaluated so market players can benchmark the performance …

Analysis Of The Construction Waste Management Performance In Hongkong: The Public And Private Sectors Compared Using Big Data, Weisheng Lu, Xi Chen, Daniel Chi Wing Ho, Hongdi Wang

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

There is an ongoing debate concerning the disparity between the public and private sectors in relation to construction waste management (CWM) performance: some argue that CWM performance between the two sectors should have no difference since they are under the governance of the same set of CWM related regulations, while others argue that public sector clients should perform better as they are subject to greater social scrutiny. Previous studies comparing CWM performance have suffered from insufficient quality data, leaving the debate on the CWM performance disparity largely inconclusive. Informed by the Coase Invariant Theorem, this research empirically compares CWM performance …

Handbag is an iconic fashion accessory in our material culture. Following the tradition of representational thinking, this article introduces the handbag as an epistemic consumption object through which to investigate consumer experiences, practices and identity construction in relation to everyday lived discourses. The handbag research involves an examination of participants’ personal belongings inside their bags together with phenomenological interviews concerning the associated subjective experiences along with these material objects. We demonstrate how these material possessions become the subject of the research that facilitates multiple conversations between researchers and participants as to introspect, evaluate and interpret the significance of symbolic consumption …
