Modelling And Simulation Of An Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (Anfis) For Mobile Learning, Ahmed Al-Hmouz, Jun Shen, Rami Al-Hmouz, Jun Yan

Dr Jun Yan

With recent advances in mobile learning (m-learning), it is becoming possible for learning activities to occur everywhere. The learner model presented in our earlier work was partitioned into smaller elements in the form of learner profiles, which collectively represent the entire learning process. This paper presents an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) for delivering adapted learning content to mobile learners. The ANFIS model was designed using trial and error based on various experiments. This study was conducted to illustrate that ANFIS is effective with hybrid learning, for the adaptation of learning content according to learners' needs. Study results show that …

Mathematical Modelling For A C60 Carbon Nanotube Oscillator, Barry Cox, Ngamta Thamwattana, James Hill Dec 2012

Mathematical Modelling For A C60 Carbon Nanotube Oscillator, Barry Cox, Ngamta Thamwattana, James Hill

Dr Ngamta Thamwattana

The discovery of fullerenes C60 and carbon nanotubes has created an enormous impact on nanotechnology. Because of their unique mechanical and electronic properties, such as low weight, high strength, flexibility and thermal stability, fullerenes C60 and carbon nanotubes are of considerable interest to researchers from many scientific areas. One problem that has attracted much attention is the creation of gigahertz oscillators. While there are difficulties for micromechanical oscillators, or resonators, to reach a frequency in the gigahertz range, it is possible for nanomechanical systems to achieve this. A number of studies have found that the sliding of the inner-shell inside …

Continuum Modelling Of Gigahertz Nano-Oscillators, James Hill, Ngamta Thamwattana, Duangkamon Baowan, Tamsyn Hilder, Barry Cox

Dr Ngamta Thamwattana

Fullerenes and carbon nanotubes are of considerable interest throughout many scientific areas due to their unique and exceptional properties, such as low weight, high strength, flexibility, high thermal conductivity and chemical stability. These nanostructures have many potential applications in nano-devices. One concept that has attracted much attention is the creation of nano-oscillators, which can produce frequencies in the gigahertz range, for applications such as ultra-fast optical filters and nano-antennae. In this paper, we provide the underlying mechanisms of the gigahertz nano-oscillators and we review some recent results derived by the authors using the Lennard-Jones potential together with the continuum approach …

Modelling Adsorption Of A Water Molecule Into Various Pore Structures Of Silica Gel, Duangkamon Baowan, Ngamta Thamwattana Dec 2012

Modelling Adsorption Of A Water Molecule Into Various Pore Structures Of Silica Gel, Duangkamon Baowan, Ngamta Thamwattana

Dr Ngamta Thamwattana

Silica gel is widely used in commercial applications as a water adsorbent due to its properties including hydrothermally stable, high water sorption capacity, low regeneration temperature, low cost and wide range of pore diameters. Since the water sorption capacity of silica gel strongly depends on the pore size and structure, which can be controlled during synthesis, this paper study the effect of pore shapes and dimensions of silica gel upon the adsorption of a water molecule aiming at maximising the water sorption capacity. In particular, we consider three types of pore structures, namely cylindrical, square prismatic and conical pores. On …

Modelling Peptide Nanotubes For Artificial Ion Channels, Ngamta Thamwattana, Barry Cox, Fainida Rahmat Dec 2012

Modelling Peptide Nanotubes For Artificial Ion Channels, Ngamta Thamwattana, Barry Cox, Fainida Rahmat

Dr Ngamta Thamwattana

We investigate the van der Waals interaction of D,L-Ala cyclopeptide nanotubes and various ions, ion&¿water clusters and C60 fullerenes, using the Lennard-Jones potential and a continuum approach which assumes that the atoms are smeared over the peptide nanotube providing an average atomic density. Our results predict that Li + , Na + , Rb + and Cl &¿ ions and ion&¿water clusters are accepted into peptide nanotubes of 8.5 Å internal diameter whereas the C60 molecule is rejected. The model indicates that the C60 molecule is accepted into peptide nanotubes of 13 Å internal diameter, suggesting that the interaction energy …

Taking Participatory In Participatory Modelling Seriously, Y Maru, K Alexandridis, Pascal Perez Nov 2012

Taking Participatory In Participatory Modelling Seriously, Y Maru, K Alexandridis, Pascal Perez

Professor Pascal Perez

Over the last three decades participatory research processes have informed much international development and conservation work in developing countries. Public participation is also a growing legislative requirement in natural resource and environmental management in developed countries. So far, multiple participatory approaches have been formulated and applied in different contexts, including so-called participatory modelling methods. The latter have developed alongside a growing unease and fundamental critique of the participatory approaches and their theoretical underpinnings. One of the central themes running through the critique is the naivete with which complexities of power relations are assumed to be understood and addressed in participatory …

Dynamic Modelling Of Hydroelectric Turbine-Generator Unit Connected To A Hvdc System For Small Signal Stability Analysis, Yin Chin Choo, Ashish Agalgaonkar, Kashem Muttaqi, Sarath Perera, Michael Negnevitsky Nov 2012

Dynamic Modelling Of Hydroelectric Turbine-Generator Unit Connected To A Hvdc System For Small Signal Stability Analysis, Yin Chin Choo, Ashish Agalgaonkar, Kashem Muttaqi, Sarath Perera, Michael Negnevitsky

Associate Professor Kashem Muttaqi

This paper presents the linearised small-signal dynamic modelling of hydroelectric turbine-generator (TG) unit with CIGRE first high-voltage direct current (HVDC) benchmark system in the synchronously rotating D-Q reference frame for small-signal stability analysis. The interaction behaviour between the hydroelectric unit and the dynamics and control of HVDC system is investigated utilising eigen-analysis,participation factor analysis and by conducting sensitivity studies. The computation of eigenvalues and eigenvectors for small signal stability analysis provides an invaluable insight onto the power system dynamic behaviour by characterising the damping and frequency of the system oscillatory modes. Theconsequences of different operating conditions, such as active and …

Application Of Fuzzy Narx To Human Gait Modelling And Identification, Seyed Hesami, Fazel Naghdy, David Stirling, Harold Hill Oct 2011

Application Of Fuzzy Narx To Human Gait Modelling And Identification, Seyed Hesami, Fazel Naghdy, David Stirling, Harold Hill

Professor Fazel Naghdy

A new modelling and classification approach for human gait is proposed. Body movements are obtained using a sensor suit recording inertial signals that are subsequently modelled on a humanoid frame with 23 degrees of freedom (DOF). Measured signals include position, velocity, acceleration, orientation, angular velocity and angular acceleration. The identification and modelling method segments the stream of non–linear movement data on the basis of the features extracted from the sensor signals. A model is then created for the movement of every individual. This model is used as a dynamic finger print for that specific individual. In the future stages of …

Geometric & Haptic Modelling Of Textile Artifacts, Fazel Naghdy, Diana Wood Conroy, Hugh Armitage Oct 2011

Geometric & Haptic Modelling Of Textile Artifacts, Fazel Naghdy, Diana Wood Conroy, Hugh Armitage

Professor Fazel Naghdy

Geometric modelling and haptic rendering of textiles is an area of research in which interest has significantly increased over the last decade. A haptic representation is created by adding the physical properties of an object to its geometric configuration. While research has been conducted into geometric modelling of fabrics, current systems require textile data to be manually entered into the computer simulation by a technician. This study explores the possibility of automatic generation of geometric and haptic models of real world textile samples. The development of a scalable and generic methodology for geometric and haptic modelling of plain weave textiles …
