A New Autonomous Underwater Vehicle For Imaging Research, C. Roman, O. Pizarro, R. Eustice, H. Singh

Christopher N. Roman

Currently, unmanned underwater vehicles either tend to be cumbersome and complex to run, or operationally simple, but not quite suitable platforms for deep water imaging. This paper presents an alternative design in the form of a new low cost and easier to use autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) for imaging research. The objective of the vehicle is to serve as a readily available and operationally simple tool that allows rapid testing of imaging algorithms in areas such as photomosaicking, 3D image reconstruction from a single camera, image based navigation, and multi-sensor fusion of bathymetry and optical data. These are all current …

Advances In Fusion Of High Resolution Underwater Optical And Acoustic Data, H. Singh, C. Roman, L. Whitcomb, D. Yoerger

Christopher N. Roman

We report efforts to merge data from the complementary modalities of optical and acoustic sensing for obtaining more accurate representations of the seafloor. We show that the principal obstacles to merging the acoustic and optical imaging modalities are the distortions inherent to each modality. The construction of geometrically accurate photomosaics is dominated by incremental errors arising as individual images are scaled and warped to form the photomosaic. For microbathymetric mapping, principal errors arise from sensor position and orientation calibration parameters that affect our ability to construct maps from sonar data that are commensurate with sensor and navigation resolution. We show …

Techniques For Effectively Exploiting A Zero Overhead Loop Buffer, Gang-Ryung Uh, Yuhong Wang, David Whalley, Sanjay Jinturkar, Chris Burns, Vincent Cao

Gang-Ryung Uh

A Zero Overhead Loop Buffer (ZOLB) is an architectural feature that is commonly found in DSP processors. This buffer can be viewed as a compiler managed cache that contains a sequence of instructions that will be executed a specified number of times. Unlike loop unrolling, a loop buffer can be used to minimize loop overhead without the penalty of increasing code size. In addition, a ZOLB requires relatively little space and power, which are both important considerations for most DSP applications. This paper describes strategies for generating code to effectively use a ZOLB. The authors have found that many common …

Boundary Quadrature Formulas And Their Applications, Tian-Xiao He

Tian-Xiao He

This chapter surveys the analytical approach for constructing multivariate numerical integration formulas that use only boundary points as evaluation points. The applications of boundary quadrature formulas to boundary value problems of partial differential equations are also discussed.

Evaluating The Effective Action, Br Holstein Dec 1999

Evaluating The Effective Action, Br Holstein

Barry R Holstein

The use of effective field theory, in situations wherein the energy-momentum of light particles is much lower than the rest mass of heavy degrees of freedom, has become an important one in contemporary physics. Herein we examine various means by which this effective action can be evaluated, using the effective photon–photon interaction—the Euler–Heisenberg Lagrangian—as a pedagogical example.

C1 Quadratic Macroelements And C1 Orthogonal Multiresolution Analyses In 2d, Tian-Xiao He

Tian-Xiao He

Each triangle of an arbitrary regular triangulation Δ of a polygonal region in R2 is subdivided into twelve subtriangles by using three connecting lines joining three arbitrarily chosen points on its edges, three connecting lines from an arbitrarily chosen interior point in the triangle to its three vertices, and three connecting lines joining the points on the edges and the interior point. In this refinement, C1 quadratic finite elements can be constructed. In this paper, we will give explicit Bezier coefficients of elements in terms of the parameters that describe function and first partial derivative values at vertices …
