Reactions Of Small Carbon-Bearing Radicals With Unsaturated Hydrocarbons: Product Detection And Low Temperature Kinetics, Adam Trevitt, Fabien Goulay, Stephen Leone

Adam Trevitt

We report on results from two experimental techniques concerned with the reactions of small carbon based radicals (CN and CH) with unsaturated hydrocarbons. First, low temperature (100-300K) kinetic studies using a pulse Laval nozzle technique probe the reactions of the CN radical with benzene and toluene. The CN + benzene is found to be a fast, barrierless reaction. But in the case of toluene, two reaction pathways are in competition, one of which back dissociates to the reactants. The implications for the atmosphere of Titan are discussed. Product detection studies undertaken at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) using synchrotron coupled …

Homo floresiensis was recovered from Late Pleistocene deposits on the island of Flores in eastern Indonesia, but has the stature, limb proportions and endocranial volume of African Pliocene Australopithecus 1. The holotype of the species (LB1), excavated in 2003 from Liang Bua, consisted of a partial skeleton minus the arms. Here we describe additional H. floresiensis remains excavated from the cave in 2004. These include arm bones belonging to the holotype skeleton, a second adult mandible, and postcranial material from other individuals. We can now reconstruct the body proportions of H. floresiensis with some certainty. The finds further demonstrate …

Finding Creativity In A Small City:How Qualitative Mapping Methods Can Reveal New Geographies Of Creativity, Chris Brennan-Horley

Christopher R Brennan-Horley

This chapter outlines a qualitative mapping approach suitable for uncovering key geographical themes associated with small city creative industries. Until recently, the spatial dynamics underpinning creative economies in small cities and other places that constitute an imagined creative 'periphery' (Gibson 2010), have been absent from debates about the geography of creative industries. Instead, the focus has settled on case studies from large cities of Europe and North America, and selected ones at that, where stories of creative industry agglomeration and transformation are most obvious. Oft-cited examples include London, New York, Los Angeles, Manchester and Berlin, fuelling generalisations about the spatiality …
