Parametric Art, Shaun Pollard, Daanial Ahmad, Satyanand Singh Dec 2020

Parametric Art, Shaun Pollard, Daanial Ahmad, Satyanand Singh

Publications and Research

Lissajous curves, named after Jules Antoine Lissajous (1822-1880) are generated by the parametric equations =() and =() in its simplistic form. Others have studied these curves and their applications like Nathaniel Bowditch in 1815, and they are often referred to as Bowditch curves as well. Lissajous curves are found in engineering, mathematics, graphic design, physics, and many other backgrounds. In this project entitled “Parametric Art” this project will focus on analyzing these types of equations and manipulating them to create art. We will be investigating these curves by answering a series of questions that elucidate their purpose. Using Maple, which …

Understanding Of Aerosol Transmission Of Covid 19 In Indoor Environments, Adama Barro, Cathal O'Toole, Jacob S. Lopez, Matthew Quinones, Sherene Moore

Publications and Research

Our reason for discussing severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) or 2019 novel corona virus (Covid-19), is to understand its aerosol transmission characteristics in indoor spaces and to mitigate further spread of this disease by designing a new HVAC system. The problem that we are tackling is the spread of covid-19 droplets through aerosol transmission by looking at potential engineering solutions to the existing HVAC systems. The purpose is to eradicate the spread of the COVID-19 by testing indoor spaces in an effort to understand the effectiveness of ventilation controls. We believe that scientists and engineers have not …

Geometry Aided Sonification, Michael Tecce Jul 2020

Geometry Aided Sonification, Michael Tecce

Mathematics and Computer Science Presentations

Sonification is the process of deriving an audio representation of a time series which conveys important information about that time series. Otology and vision science have established that humans process audio information more quickly than visual information, and sonification can convey data to the visually impaired. In our work, we implement pipelines using Python/Numpy, and we handle both ordinary 1D time series and multivariate time series. For 1D time series, we find that using data to modulate the pitch or timing of preselected sounds (such as sine waves) simply and effectively captures repeating patterns and anomalies/outliers within the data. To …

Hoop Dreams: An Empirical Analysis Of The Gender Wage Gap In Professional Basketball, Hailey Dicicco Jul 2020

Hoop Dreams: An Empirical Analysis Of The Gender Wage Gap In Professional Basketball, Hailey Dicicco

Business and Economics Presentations

The gender wage gap is a very prominent point of discussion in the professional world, but in the sports world, it has taken the spotlight in recent years. One sport that has seen discussion and debate over salary differences is the National Basketball Association and Women’s National Basketball Association. In 2018, the average salary in the NBA was 6.4 million dollars, while the average salary in the WNBA was 71,635 dollars. A reason why these salaries are so differently is due to the amount of revenue that each league brings in. The NBA brings in roughly 7.4 billion dollars a …

Presence Of Electron Donor/Acceptor Radiographic Contrast Media In Unusual Photosynthesis Environment Of Fresh Plant Cells: Near-Infrared And X-Ray Characterization, Tetiana Soloviova, Subhendra Sarkar, Amina Shahbaz, Aldona Gjoni

Publications and Research

Photosynthesis is a chemical process through which light energy is used to convert inorganic material (water and carbon dioxide) into organic molecules. Anaerobic photosynthesis, also known as anoxygenic photosynthesis, is the process by which certain bacteria use light energy to create organic compounds but do not adequately involve oxygen. In this experiment we are trying to influence photosynthesis (light and dark reactions: PS-I and PS-II by electron rich gadolinium/iodine complexes like Eovist and Isovue. We also performed X-ray and NIR reflection spectroscopy (NIRS) to measure Gd difusivity and PS-I/II infrared response. The results for X-ray (45kvp and 5 Mas ) …

Uptake Of Co(Ii) Ions From Aqueous Solutions By Low-Cost Biopolymers And Their Hybrid, Mohamdia Nassar, Abel E. Navarro

Publications and Research

Alginate hydrogel beads (AB), spent peppermint leaf (PM), and a hybrid adsorbent of these two materials (ABPM), were studied as potential adsorbents of Cobalt (II) ions from aqueous solutions in batch system at room temperature. Equilibrium parameters such as solution pH, mass of adsorbent and the presence of a crowding agent on the adsorption of Co(II) ions were investigated. The results indicate that Co(II) uptake is maximized at pH values higher than 5, with adsorbent doses in the range 120-200 mg. Co(II) adsorption followed the trend AB > ABPM > PM with adsorption percentages of 77%, 71% and 64%, respectively.

Year-long Analysis of the Water Quality of White Horn Brook

Sponsor: Thomas Boving (Geological Sciences)

Water is the foundation for all life on earth and is the most vital resource on this planet. Despite this, oceans and waterways all over the world are being polluted and exploited in ways detrimental to their fundamental hydrologic functions. For instance, excess nitrate levels can lead to eutrophication which gives rise to harmful algae blooms. Low pH can cause the breakdown of CaCO3 exoskeletons of organisms, such mollusks. High temperature variations are major stressors to living things and can cause …
