Arsenic contamination in food and beverages is a problem due to the harm it can cause consumers. Currently in the United States there is no regulation limit. Red, white, and pink wines will be analyzed for their concentration of inorganic arsenic. Analysis of the wines will be analyzed by x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF). From this experiment we hope to develop a new method for measuring low concentrations of arsenic in wine.

Since the mid-1980’s, there have been focused federal, state and local efforts to restore the Puget Sound ecosystem. Beginning in 2008 the Puget Sound Partnership (PSP) has produced Action Agendas that describe comprehensive recovery programs and, since 2011, have identified a set of Vital Signs and indicators. As of 2018, PSP identified 25 Vital Signs (VS) with 52 affiliated indicators. The PSP is now undertaking a collaborative effort to revise the VS and indicators to address known concerns and to situate them in a framework of other types of progress measures. The objective of this work is to analyze a data set, Auto, from the R package ISLR: Introduction to Statistical Learning in R. The data set includes information for 392 observations on 9 variables including gas mileage, horsepower, weight in pounds, and engine displacement in cubic inches. The data set was taken from the StatLib library maintained at Carnegie Mellon University. The primary response variable will be gas mileage in miles per gallon, with all other variables serving as predictors, but other relationships with other response variables such as acceleration will be explored. State learning standards with increased rigor have required higher levels of achievement from students on standardized tests, high-school grades, and national percentile ranks which are used for collegiate acceptance and course placement. As a result, preparation of students for standardized tests such as the ACT and SAT have become increasingly more challenging. The current quantitative, quasi-experimental study examined the relationship between the tangible math curricula used for instruction and students’ readiness for collegiate coursework. From sample sizes of 128 and 169 high-school students in two consecutive school years, there were several statistically significant relationship differences. Analysis of test results indicated …

Douglas Armstrong, lead ONU faculty researcher, and his two research students, Zachary Emptage and Anderson Verhoeven, expanded their previous research (centered around acetylcholine and cholinergic activity), to include other types of pharmacological receptors, but again, aiming at the same type of compounds (cyclopropyl) to confer conformational (stereochemical) rigidity. The focus now is on compounds which, like acetylcholine, also contain an oxygen atom and a nitrogen atom separated by two carbon atoms, but which have pharmacological activity other than cholinergic. Several pharmacological categories have this pattern as known medicinal agents (“drugs”), including certain antidepressants, antihistamines, anti-anxiety drugs, etc. For some, there …

Autophagy is a process that generates the necessary building components for cells by cytoplasmic breakdown of unnecessary materials (Martin, Celano, Solitro, Gunaydin, Scott, et. al., 2018). This is a survival technique for cells in times of stress, especially during periods of nutrient starvation. Cancer cells, unfortunately, benefit from this process due to their ability to flourish in nutrient-starved environments, becoming resistant to therapy. The primary protein in mammals responsible for this process is a serine/threonine kinase called ULK 1 (unc-51 like autophagy initiating kinase 1). Entomophagy, or the eating of insects, has been practiced in the eastern world for centuries, however it is currently overlooked in the western nations. Studies have shown that insects, such as crickets, contain high levels of protein and minerals, however vitamin content is rarely studied. This study aims to quantify the vitamin B12 content in two cricket species, the common house cricket (Acheta domesticus) and the banded cricket (Gryllodes sigillatus). To secure data and communications in applications, developers often rely on cryptographic algorithms and APIs which provide confidentiality, integrity, and authentication based on solid mathematical foundations. While many advanced crypto algorithms are available to developers, the correct usage of these APIs is challenging. The mannose-6-phosphate/insulin-like growth factor 2 (M6P/IGF2) receptor is a transmembrane protein with the ability to sequester growth factors from the extracellular matrix. This behavior links the receptor to tumor suppression. On a structural level, the extracellular portion of the protein is segmented into 15 homologous repeats, which can be divided further into 5 triplet domains, labelled 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, and 13-15. Each triplet receptor displays its own unique ligand binding affinity, including the ability to form dimers with triplets on a second M6P/IGF2 receptor. A low-cost spectrometer was designed for the purpose of teaching spectroscopy. The spectrometer can be built by the student and contains interchangeable pieces such as slit width, grating, and lenses. This will allow the student to understand how changing these variables effects resolution. The spectrometer was constructed from PVC pipe, a plastic electrical box, and a USB webcam. The actual resolution of the spectrometer is close to the theoretical value, depending on which lens and grating is used. One solution to water security is the implementation of desalination, specifically with reverse osmosis systems. This presentation walks through the history, capabilities, future work, and explanations on how reverse osmosis systems work. Humanity will soon overshoot a safe level of atmospheric CO2, if it hasn't done so already. Countries, industries, and the global economy need to dramatically and quickly alter their behavior and technology to avoid this dangerous overshoot, yet this appears unlikely. Direct Air Capture of CO2 represents an insurance policy for society - a way of removing excess atmospheric CO2. I will present an approach to this problem based on thermal physics that cools cubic kilometers of air to extract CO2 as it sublimates. The site includes two transfer equivalency tools which can be used to search for course equivalencies by academic institution or by a given Arcadia course.
