Modeling Park Visitation Using Transformations Of Distance-Type Predictor Variables With Lasso, Ashley Hall
Modeling Park Visitation Using Transformations Of Distance-Type Predictor Variables With Lasso, Ashley Hall
Scholars Week
We examine three common transformations (identity, fourth-root, and log) to determine the most suitable transformation for evaluating the importance of certain common features surrounding the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area (TCMA) city parks on park visitation. The distances between these features and city parks are approximately exponentially distributed by noting that their relative locations closely follow the spatial Poisson process. Because a fourth-root transformation improves the normality of exponential random variables, we verify that the fourth-root transformation is considered best by comparing correlation coefficients of the fourth-rooted data to the untransformed and log-transformed data via simulation. Using the TCMA city parks …

465— Modeling Vaccine Efficacy For Tuberculosis In A Prison Population, Kaitlyn Mundackal
465— Modeling Vaccine Efficacy For Tuberculosis In A Prison Population, Kaitlyn Mundackal
GREAT Day Posters
Tuberculosis is a highly contagious disease and is particularly problematic in confined communities such as prisons. I simulated how Tuberculosis moves through a prison population and tested how much vaccination effort is needed to control its spread. To explore this, I tested adding ever increasing numbers of randomly placed edges in a network and determined the size of the largest component. Afterwards, I removed edges in the model using two different methods, one illustrating if the edges were removed randomly and the other starting with prisoners that had the most connections, to simulate the effect of vaccination. My results show …
483— Effectiveness Of Mmr Vaccination In Orthodox Jewish Neighborhoods, Meenu Mundackal
483— Effectiveness Of Mmr Vaccination In Orthodox Jewish Neighborhoods, Meenu Mundackal
GREAT Day Posters
Measles is a highly contagious disease, where large outbreaks arise by direct contact between susceptible (unvaccinated) and infectious individuals. Many Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods were affected by measles from 2018-2019. To quantify the vaccination effort on this susceptible population, a retrospective analysis was used to study the NYC and Rockland County populations using a differential equations model. A subsequent model, known as a realistically-structured network model, studied only the NYC population, in relation to typical household size. Vaccination strategies were applied to three cohorts: unvaccinated family members, members with 1 prior MMR dose, and members with 2 prior MMR doses. The …
484— Modeling Social Distancing Methods And Their Effectiveness In Combating The Spread Of Ebola, Rachel Fair
484— Modeling Social Distancing Methods And Their Effectiveness In Combating The Spread Of Ebola, Rachel Fair
GREAT Day Posters
Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is a rare but severe disease that is transmitted among humans through direct-contact with, and close proximity to, infected bodily fluids. From 2014-16, West Africa experienced the largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded, infecting over 28,000 people, and killing over 11,000. Although the symptoms of EVD are treatable, the disease can be extremely deadly, with an average of 50% EVD cases resulting in fatality. In areas where healthcare is scarce and vaccinations are not readily available, the practices of social distancing and self-quarantining have been shown to be highly effective in combating the spread of EVD. To …

Analysis Of Gas Mileage Of A Car, Joshua Ballard-Myer
Georgia College Student Research Events
The objective of this work is to analyze a data set, Auto, from the R package ISLR: Introduction to Statistical Learning in R. The data set includes information for 392 observations on 9 variables including gas mileage, horsepower, weight in pounds, and engine displacement in cubic inches. The data set was taken from the StatLib library maintained at Carnegie Mellon University. The primary response variable will be gas mileage in miles per gallon, with all other variables serving as predictors, but other relationships with other response variables such as acceleration will be explored. Results were similar to expected; traits desirable …

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)
Block designs are a type of combinatorial structures that can be used to model many different types of problems ranging from experimental design to computer software testing. They can be used to construct schemes that ensure complete optimization and efficiency of the given experiment. We focus mainly on Steiner and Kirkman triple systems, as well as, on different ways for constructing block designs. Well known results in combinatorics such as Fisher’s inequality and Kirkman’s schoolgirl problem are also discussed.
Insights From The Influx Of Prescription Painkillers In Northeast Florida: A Retrospective Analysis, Joseph Free, Michelle Dedeo
Insights From The Influx Of Prescription Painkillers In Northeast Florida: A Retrospective Analysis, Joseph Free, Michelle Dedeo
Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)
The opioid epidemic has had, and will have, long-lasting ramifications in the United States. To better understand its impact in the Northeast Florida, this research seeks to identify relationships between hydro- and oxycodone pill concentration at the county and zip code levels and socio-economic factors such as average adjusted gross income and opioid related mortality. This project utilizes time series, regression, and GIS methods to examine local opioid saturation and has led to the development of an interactive Tableau dashboard which allows users to view opioid saturation at various levels of granularity. This analysis is made possible by longitudinal data …
Session 11 - Methods: Bootstrap Control Chart For Pareto Percentiles, Ruth Burkhalter
Session 11 - Methods: Bootstrap Control Chart For Pareto Percentiles, Ruth Burkhalter
SDSU Data Science Symposium
Lifetime percentile is an important indicator of product reliability. However, the sampling distribution of a percentile estimator for any lifetime distribution is not a bell shaped one. As a result, the well-known Shewhart-type control chart cannot be applied to monitor the product lifetime percentiles. In this presentation, Bootstrap control charts based on maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) are proposed for monitoring Pareto percentiles. An intensive simulation study is conducted to compare the performance among the proposed MLE Bootstrap control chart and Shewhart-type control chart.
Evaluation Of Text Mining Techniques Using Twitter Data For Hurricane Disaster Resilience, Joshua Eason, Sathish Kumar
Evaluation Of Text Mining Techniques Using Twitter Data For Hurricane Disaster Resilience, Joshua Eason, Sathish Kumar
SDSU Data Science Symposium
Data obtained from social media microblogging websites such as Twitter provide the unique ability to collect and analyze conversations of the public in order to gain perspective on the thoughts and feelings of the general public. Sentiment and volume analysis techniques were applied to the dataset in order to gain an understanding of the amount and level of sentiment associated with certain disaster-related tweets, including a topical analysis of specific terms. This study showed that disaster-type events such as a hurricane can cause some strong negative sentiment in the period of time directly preceding the event, but ultimately returns quickly …

Asymptotic Simultaneous Estimations For Contrasts Of Quantiles, Lawrence Sethor Segbehoe, Frank Schaarschmidt, Gemechis Dilba Djira
SDSU Data Science Symposium
Although the expected value is popular, many researches in the health and social sciences involve skewed distributions and inferences concerning quantiles. Most standard multiple comparison procedures require the normality assumption. For example, few methods exist for comparing the medians of independent samples or quantiles of several distributions in general. To our knowledge, there is no general-purpose method for constructing simultaneous confidence intervals for multiple contrasts of quantiles. In this paper, we develop an asymptotic method for constructing such intervals and extend the idea to that of time-to-event data in survival analysis. Small-sample performance of the proposed method is assessed in …
