Genome-Wide Analysis Of Alternative Rna Splicing In Children With Acute Myeloid Leukemia (Aml), Xichen Li
Genome-Wide Analysis Of Alternative Rna Splicing In Children With Acute Myeloid Leukemia (Aml), Xichen Li
Shared Knowledge Conference
The pediatric Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is a high-risk and hard-to-treat childhood cancer that originates in the bone marrow from immature white blood cells. Recently, more and more evidence indicates that aberrant splicing of genes is a common characteristic for AML. Gene expression profiles have proved extremely useful for identifying genes that are associated with clinical characteristics and survival outcome of cancer patients. However, conventional gene expression profiles do not account for the differences observed in expressed isoforms when alternative RNA splicing is analyzed. Alternative RNA splicing can generate dozens of distinct transcripts from individual genes and the expressions of …
Analysis Of Ranked Gene Tree Probability Distributions Under The Coalescent Process For Detecting Anomaly Zones, Anastasiia Kim
Analysis Of Ranked Gene Tree Probability Distributions Under The Coalescent Process For Detecting Anomaly Zones, Anastasiia Kim
Shared Knowledge Conference
In phylogenetic studies, gene trees are used to reconstruct species tree. Under the multispecies coalescent model, gene trees topologies may differ from that of species trees. The incorrect gene tree topology (one that does not match the species tree) that is more probable than the correct one is termed anomalous gene tree (AGT). Species trees that can generate such AGTs are said to be in the anomaly zone (AZ). In this region, the method of choosing the most common gene tree as the estimate of the species tree will be inconsistent and will converge to an incorrect species tree when …

Deep Machine Learning For Mechanical Performance And Failure Prediction, Elijah Reber, Nickolas D. Winovich, Guang Lin
Deep Machine Learning For Mechanical Performance And Failure Prediction, Elijah Reber, Nickolas D. Winovich, Guang Lin
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Deep learning has provided opportunities for advancement in many fields. One such opportunity is being able to accurately predict real world events. Ensuring proper motor function and being able to predict energy output is a valuable asset for owners of wind turbines. In this paper, we look at how effective a deep neural network is at predicting the failure or energy output of a wind turbine. A data set was obtained that contained sensor data from 17 wind turbines over 13 months, measuring numerous variables, such as spindle speed and blade position and whether or not the wind turbine experienced …
Efvs Effects On Pilot Performance, Michael Campbell, Nsikak Udo-Imeh, Steven J. Landry
Efvs Effects On Pilot Performance, Michael Campbell, Nsikak Udo-Imeh, Steven J. Landry
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Flight tests have been conducted at Purdue University using a computer-based flying simulator in an attempt to determine and measure the effects of Enhanced Flight Vision Systems (EFVS) on the performance of pilots during landing. Knowledge of these effects could help guide future design and implementation of EFVS in modern commercial aircraft, and further increase pilots’ ability to control the aircraft in low-visibility conditions. The problem that has faced researchers in the past has revolved around the difficulty in interpreting the data which is generated by these tests. The difficulty in making a generalized conclusion based on the large amount …

Pooling Of Variances: The Skeleton In The Mixed Model Closet?, Philip M. Dixon
Pooling Of Variances: The Skeleton In The Mixed Model Closet?, Philip M. Dixon
Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture and Natural Resources
I explore three related issues concerning pooling of error variances: when is it appropriate (or not) to pool, how best to evaluate equality of variances, and whether there is a cost to never pooling. I focus on pooling decisions in a combined analysis of a multi-site experiment. A-priori, sites should have different error variances. My primary question is whether an analysis that ignores unequal variances is wrong.
I find that ignoring heteroscedasticity between sites maintains, or provides slightly conservative, tests of average treatment effects and treatment-by-site interactions. Models with site-specific variances do provide more powerful tests when variances are different. …
An Optimized Route For Q100'S Bert And Kristin To Visit All Jersey Mike's Subs In Atlanta For Charity
Symposium of Student Scholars
The Bert Show is a popular morning show on Atlanta’s Q100 radio station. They host a non-profit organization that provides a “magical, all-expenses-paid, five-day journey to Walt Disney World for children with chronic and terminal illnesses and their families” called “Bert’s Big Adventure.” On March 28th, 2018, thirty-seven locations of Jersey Mike’s are participating in the their Jersey Mike’s Day of Giving to support Bert’s Big Adventure. The goal is to have two popular radio show hosts visit each of these locations for some photos and presence to draw in more customers! But how do we get two …
Improved Regional Sports Scheduling Using Sas Optgraph
Improved Regional Sports Scheduling Using Sas Optgraph
Symposium of Student Scholars
My project improves upon the tmanual cluster method of state interleague scheduling used by the Georgia State Soccer Association by use of an automated multi-round linear assignment algorithm based on SAS Optgraph.
Currently, interleague schedules are formed by manually grouping teams according to placement on a map. Typically, ten teams are assigned to a group and each team plays all of the others once per season (nine games). This approach has two flaws: 1) distance on a map does not always correlate with travel time, and 2) assigning teams to clusters precludes teams from playing teams from other groups. The …

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)
Imagine there are n>1 people seated around a table, and person S starts with a fair coin they will flip to decide whom to hand the coin next -- if "heads" they pass right, and if "tails" they pass left. This process continues until all people at the table have "touched" the coin. Curiously, it turns out that all people seated at the table other than S have the same probability 1/(n-1) of being last to touch the coin. In fact, Lovasz and Winkler ("A note on the last new vertex visited by a random walk," J. Graph Theory, …
A Comparison Of Unsupervised Methods For Dna Microarray Leukemia Data, Denise Harness
A Comparison Of Unsupervised Methods For Dna Microarray Leukemia Data, Denise Harness
Appalachian Student Research Forum
Advancements in DNA microarray data sequencing have created the need for sophisticated machine learning algorithms and feature selection methods. Probabilistic graphical models, in particular, have been used to identify whether microarrays or genes cluster together in groups of individuals having a similar diagnosis. These clusters of genes are informative, but can be misleading when every gene is used in the calculation. First feature reduction techniques are explored, however the size and nature of the data prevents traditional techniques from working efficiently. Our method is to use the partial correlations between the features to create a precision matrix and predict which …

Tinnitus And Dysfunctional Interactions Between Distributed Resting State Networks, Sivayini Kandeepan
Tinnitus And Dysfunctional Interactions Between Distributed Resting State Networks, Sivayini Kandeepan
Western Research Forum
It is known that peripheral lesions in the cochlea or the auditory nerve produce dysfunctional input to central auditory structures and induce changes in the auditory system causing tinnitus. Recently, it has been proposed that the unified percept of tinnitus could be considered as an emergent property of multiple overlapping dynamic brain networks, each encoding a specific tinnitus characteristic.
The aim of our study was to investigate the neuronal activation patterns associated with specific clinical tinnitus characteristics using fMRI. We hypothesize that tinnitus clinical characteristics could be associated with specific resting-state activity and connectivity patterns and that this could be …
Building A Better Risk Prevention Model, Steven Hornyak
Building A Better Risk Prevention Model, Steven Hornyak
National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference
This presentation chronicles the work of Houston County Schools in developing a risk prevention model built on more than ten years of longitudinal student data. In its second year of implementation, Houston At-Risk Profiles (HARP), has proven effective in identifying those students most in need of support and linking them to interventions and supports that lead to improved outcomes and significantly reduces the risk of failure.
