This document contains the text associated with a series of computer-based lab exercises to help students apply the concepts usually included in a first course in Statistics. A compressed file has been included that contains a separate folder for each lab. In each folder is an excel spreadsheet file and an editable word document providing the instructions for students to complete the exercise. Species In Vernal Pools: Anova, Lisa Manne

A one-way analysis of variance exercise using data on species diversities from vernal pools.Data are from vernal pools in Willowbrook Park (adjacent to College of Staten Island's campus) in spring.

The typical ANOVA gives a straightforward result (significant anova, easily-interpreted Tukey-Kramer analysis). This data set requires more nuanced interpretation, as the ANOVA is marginally significant, and Tukey-Kramer yields one significant pairwise comparison between groups. Relative lack of variation within groups explains this apparent enigma.

In order to promote students’ conceptual understanding and learning experience in introductory statistics, a technology task, which focuses on the probability distribution in which means are defined, was created using TinkerPlots, an exploratory dataanalysis and modeling software.
