Confucius: A Tool Supporting Collaborative Scientific Workflow Composition, Jia Zhang, Daniel Kuc, Shiyong Lu Dec 2013

Confucius: A Tool Supporting Collaborative Scientific Workflow Composition, Jia Zhang, Daniel Kuc, Shiyong Lu

Jia Zhang

Modern scientific data management and analysis usually rely on multiple scientists with diverse expertise. In recent years, such a collaborative effort is often structured and automated by a data flow-oriented process called scientific workflow. However, such workflows may have to be designed and revised among multiple scientists over a long time period. Existing workbenches are single user-oriented and do not support scientific workflow application development in a “collaborative fashion.” In this paper, we report our research on the enabling techniques in the aspects of collaboration provenance management and reproduciability. Based on a scientific collaboration ontology, we propose a service-oriented collaboration …

Architecture-Driven Variation Analysis For Designing Cloud Applications, Liang-Jie Zhang, Jia Zhang Aug 2009

Architecture-Driven Variation Analysis For Designing Cloud Applications, Liang-Jie Zhang, Jia Zhang

Jia Zhang

Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is one central technical foundation supporting the rapidly emerging Cloud Computing paradigm. To date, however, its application practice is not always successful. One major reason is the lack of a systematic engineering process and tool supported by reusable architectural artifacts. Toward this ultimate goal, this paper proposes a variationoriented analysis method of performing architectural building blocks (ABB)-based SOA solution design for enabling cloud application design. We present the modeling of solution-level architectural artifacts and their relationships, whose formalization enables eventbased variation notification and propagation analysis. We report a prototype tool and describe how we extend the …

A Context-Driven Content Adaptation Planner For Improving Mobile Internet Accessibility, Stephen Yang, Jia Zhang, Angus Huang, Jeffrey Tsai, Philip Yu

Jia Zhang

This paper presents our design and development of a context-driven content adaptation planner, which dynamically transforms requested Web content into a proper format conforming to receiving contexts (e.g., access condition, network connection, and receiving device). Aiming to establish a semantic foundation for content adaptation, we apply description logics (DLs) to formally define context profiles and requirements and automate content adaptation decision. In addition, the computational overhead caused by content adaptation can be moderately decreased through the reduction of the size of adapted content

Design And Development Of A University-Oriented Personalizable Web 2.0 Mashup Portal, Jia Zhang, Momtazul Karim, Karthik Akula, Raghu Ariga

Jia Zhang

This paper reports several key challenges and solutions when we apply Web 2.0 mashup technology to build a university-oriented services portal. A two-layer mashup service model is proposed as the underlying basis to support multiple granularities of services mashup. We explore a caching technique to facilitate personalizable services requests. We also report our preliminary practice of exploiting Facebook as a social relationship data source

A Method And Case Study Of Designing Presentation Module In An Soa-Based Solution Using Configurable Architectural Building Blocks (Abbs), Liang-Jie Zhang, Jia Zhang, Abdul Allam

Jia Zhang

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) projects typically pose challenging requirements on software developers such as flexibility, speed to market, and adaptability to ever changing business requirements. In this paper, we propose a novel method of rapidly designing presentation module for an SOA-based solution using fine-grained configurable architectural building blocks (ABBs). An ABB-based presentation pattern derived from industry best practices is presented, associated with a tailored ABB configuration framework. We also introduce a formal way of modeling ABBs and their interactions. Real-life experiences of applying our ABB-based model are condensed into sixteen architectural decision points, which are further applied into a variety of …

A Petri Net-Based Specification Model Towards Verifiable Services Computing, Jia Zhang, Carl K. Chang, Seong W. Kim

Jia Zhang

The emerging paradigm of Web services opens a new way of engineering enterprise Web applications via rapidly developing and deploying Web applications, by composing independently published Web service components to conduct new business transactions. However, how to formally validate and reason about the properties of an enterprise system composed of Web service components remains a challenge. This chapter introduces an advanced topic of enterprise service computing – formal verification and validation of enterprise Web services. The authors introduce a Web Services Net (WS-Net), which is an executable architectural description language incorporating the semantics of Colored Petri Nets with the style …

Privacy Issues Of Applying Rfid In Retail Industry, Haifei Li, Patrick C.K. Hung, Jia Zhang, David Ahn Dec 2005

Privacy Issues Of Applying Rfid In Retail Industry, Haifei Li, Patrick C.K. Hung, Jia Zhang, David Ahn

Jia Zhang

This case study describes the privacy issues of applying Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in the retail industry. With the dramatic price drop of RFID tags, it is possible that RFID be applied to individual items sold by a retailer. However, the RFID technology poses critical privacy challenges. In this study, we analyze the potential privacy issue of RFID utilization, and we propose a privacy authorization model aiming for precisely defining RFID privacy policies for the retail industry.

Auction-Based Pricing Model For Web Service Providers, Jia Zhang, Ning Zhang, Liang-Jie Zhang Dec 2005

Auction-Based Pricing Model For Web Service Providers, Jia Zhang, Ning Zhang, Liang-Jie Zhang

Jia Zhang

Applying auctions to Web services selection and invocation calls for examination due to the unique features of Web services, such as interoperable machine-to-machine interactions and reenterable bargaining services. In this paper we propose a formal model for Web services-based auctions. Examining one-sided sealed auction type, we prove mathematically that service requestors’ risk preferences could lead to different pricing strategies for service providers towards higher profit. We argue that Service Level Agreement (SLA) documents can be used to analyze service requestors’ preferences. On top of WS-Agreement, we propose a basic service requestor risk preference elicitation algorithm, as well as a historical …
