Estimations Of Flood Waste From Rural Dumpsites Located On Floodplains From Neamţ, County, Romania, Florin C. Mihai
Florin C MIHAI
Waste dumping is a serious environmental threat to major rivers from extra- Carpathian Region of Neamţ county in the proximity of villages because the lack of waste collection services. In this context, floodplains are frequently susceptible to such bad practices, these areas being also exposed to stronger floods. The paper aims to calculate the potential waste taken from these areas in order to assess a quantitative impact of these bad practices.

From a sociological viewpoints, Universe galaxy contraction is something …
Breaking The Theft-Chain-Cycle: Property Marking As A Defensive Tool, William J. Bailey, David J. Brooks
Breaking The Theft-Chain-Cycle: Property Marking As A Defensive Tool, William J. Bailey, David J. Brooks
Bill Bailey
The theft of property and its associated impact effects many parts of society. For example, a considerable amount of resources are expended in trying to reduce property theft, as such crime engenders both a financial and emotional impact (Grabosky, 1995, p. 1) on those involved. Factors such as fear of crime, increased insurance premiums and victimization are all outcomes of property crime. Much of the past research has focused on the mitigation of such crimes, collectively termed as ‘crime prevention’. Crime prevention are “any actions designed to reduce the actual level of crime and/or the perceived crime” (S.P. Lab, 2010, …

A Positive Trait Item Response Model, Joseph F. Lucke
A Positive Trait Item Response Model, Joseph F. Lucke
Joseph Lucke
All current models from item response theory (IRT) assume the latent trait follows a standard normal distribution. While this assumption is appropriate for traits such as ability or attitude, it creates both conceptual and technical problems traits such as addiction (alcohol, drugs, gambling). The distribution of an addiction trait is better assumed to be anchored at zero (no addiction) and positively skewed. A small change to the usual IRT model yields a class of positive-trait item response models (PTIRMs). I discuss PTIRMs and present one model in detail, including item characteristic curves and item information curves. I present an example …

The Value Of Government Mandated Location-Based Services In Emergencies In Australia, Anas Aloudat, Katina Michael, Roba Abbas, Mutaz M. Al-Debei
Dr. Mutaz M. Al-Debei
The adoption of mobile technologies for emergency management has the capacity to save lives. In Australia in February 2009, the Victorian Bushfires claimed 173 lives, the worst peace-time disaster in the nation’s history. The Australian government responded swiftly to the tragedy by going to tender for mobile applications that could be used during emergencies, such as mobile alerts and location services. These applications, which are becoming increasingly accurate with the evolution of positioning techniques, have the ability to deliver personalized information direct to the citizen during crises, complementing traditional broadcasting mediums like television and radio. Indeed governments have a responsibility …

Science Boot Camp for Librarians was envisioned as a casual but intensive immersion event into selected scientific subjects that employ networked computing capabilities for research and collaboration. The goal of the event is to provide librarians with networking opportunities, but more importantly, to give them some of the context and ocabulary of a discipline to enable them to better engage faculty and research scientists with regard to escience. A half-day is devoted to each of three topics chosen for that year’s camp. A local faculty member provides an overview of the research area, and a second describes a single project …

An Essay On The Nature And Significance Of Deception And Telling Lies, Sudhanshu K. Mishra
An Essay On The Nature And Significance Of Deception And Telling Lies, Sudhanshu K. Mishra
Sudhanshu K Mishra
A lie is an expression at deviance with the truth known or honestly believed by someone with an intention to deceive others for certain purpose, social or personal. An ability to lie might be evolutionary in nature possibly to help in survival, since it is found in the non-human world also. In the biological perspective, each individual is at war against all others. Thus viewed, lies are the cardinal virtues for survival and, by implication, the carriers of evolution. In the human world, lying is morally blameworthy in a relatively un-obscure way. There may be cases of lying to which …
Reducing The Impact Of Ethnic Tensions On Economic Growth – Economic Or Political Institutions?, Atin Basu Choudhary, Jim Bang, Michael Reksulak
Reducing The Impact Of Ethnic Tensions On Economic Growth – Economic Or Political Institutions?, Atin Basu Choudhary, Jim Bang, Michael Reksulak
Atin Basu Choudhary
We use a standard growth regression model and show that ethnic tensions reduce per capita growth rates. We also find evidence that “good” economic and political institutions improve per capita growth rates. More importantly, good economic institutions mitigate the effect of ethnic tensions on per capita growth while good political institutions do not. Consequently, it is foremost capitalist freedom that promotes peace and development.

Participation And Engagement In Sport: A Double Hurdle Approach For The United Kingdom, Babatunde Buraimo, Brad Humphreys, Rob Simmons
Dr Babatunde Buraimo
This paper uses pooled cross-section data from four waves of the United Kingdom’s Taking Part Survey, 2005 to 2009, in order to investigate determinants of probability of participation and levels of engagement in sports. The two rival modelling approaches considered here are the double-hurdle approach and the Heckman sample selection model. The Heckman model proves to be deficient in several key respects. The double-hurdle approach offers more reliable estimates than the Heckman sample selection model, at least for this particular survey. The distinction is more than just statistical nuance as there are substantive differences in qualitative results from the two …

E-Science @ Umass: Anticipating And Supporting E-Science Activities At The University Of Massachusetts, Maxine G. Schmidt, Rebecca Reznik-Zellen
Maxine G Schmidt
In March of 2008 an Ad Hoccommittee of Science Librarians from the University of Massachusetts Five Campus System convened to discuss the challenges of e-science and prepare the Libraries for their role in e-science initiatives. Three primary outcomes intended to support e-science activities emerged from the work of the Ad Hoc committee.

e-Science @ the University of Massachusetts Abstract: What is e-Science and how can libraries and librarians support it? The University of Massachusetts takes a proactive approach to support network-enabled research on its campuses and provides examples where e-Science is already at work. Statement: “e-Science” is a term commonly used to describe research in a networked environment, a growing trend not only in the sciences, but the arts and humanities as well. e-Science creates both opportunities and challenges for academic libraries. The opportunities lie in leveraging the basic skill set that libraries and librarians already possess: the knowledge of and practical …
A Critique Of The False-Positive Report Probability, Joseph Lucke
A Critique Of The False-Positive Report Probability, Joseph Lucke
Joseph Lucke
The false positive report probability (FPRP) was proposed as a Bayesian prophylactic against false reports of significant associations. Unfortunately, the derivation of the FPRP is unsound. A heuristic derivation fails to make its point, and a formal derivation reveals a probabilistic misrepresentation of an observation. As a result, the FPRP can yield serious inferential errors. In particular, the FPRP can use an observation that is many times more likely under the null hypothesis than under the alternative to infer that the null hypothesis is far less probable than the alternative. Contrary to its intended purpose, the FPRP can promote false …

Player Guild Dynamics And Evolution In Massively Multiplayer Online Games, Chien Hsun Chen, J. L. Hsieh, C. T. Sun
Chien Hsun Chen
In the latest versions of massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs), developers have purposefully made guilds part of game environments. Guilds represent a powerful method for giving players a sense of online community, but there is little quantitative data on guild dynamics. To address this topic, we took advantage of a feature found in one of today’s most popular MMOGs (World of Warcraft) to collect in-game data: user interfaces that players can modify and refine. In addition to collecting data on in-game player activities, we used this feature to observe and investigate how players join and leave guilds. Data were analyzed …
Gone In 60 Seconds: The Absorption Of News In A High-Frequency Betting Market, Babatunde Buraimo, David Peel, Rob Simmons
Gone In 60 Seconds: The Absorption Of News In A High-Frequency Betting Market, Babatunde Buraimo, David Peel, Rob Simmons
Dr Babatunde Buraimo
This paper tests for efficiency in a betting market that offers high-frequency data, the Betfair betting exchange for wagering on outcomes of English Premier League soccer matches. We find clear evidence of rapid adjustment of prices to large disturbances (news). Full adjustment takes place within a one minute interval after the news. This suggests that this particular wagering market is not just efficient at pre-match prices but is also efficient in the face of events within games.
Climate Change And Freshwater Resources, Noah D. Hall, Bret B. Stuntz, Robert H. Abrams
Climate Change And Freshwater Resources, Noah D. Hall, Bret B. Stuntz, Robert H. Abrams
Noah D Hall
The Earth’s climate is warming. This is the unequivocal conclusion of climate scientists. Despite the complexities of climatology, certain consistent trends emerge with implications for water availability: as the world gets warmer, it will experience increased regional variability in precipitation, with more frequent heavy precipitation events and more susceptibility to drought. These simple facts will have a profound impact on freshwater resources throughout the United States, as the warmer climate will reduce available water supplies and increase water demand. Unfortunately, current water law and policy are not up to the new challenges of climate change and resulting pressures on freshwater …

Perspectives On Social Cognition, Leslie Marsh, Christian Onof

No longer is sociality the preserve of the social sciences, or ‘‘culture’’ the preserve of the humanities or anthropology. By the same token, cognition is no longer the sole preserve of the cognitive sciences. Social cognition (SC) or, sociocognition if you like, is thus a kaleidoscope of research projects that has seen exponential growth over the past 30 or so years. That so many disciplines now invoke the term ‘‘social cognition,’’ shouldn’t tempt one into thinking that they are all denoting the same idea. On the contrary, with such methodologically and perspectivally diverse interests involved, there is every chance that …
