Identifying Factors To Develop And Validate A Heat Vulnerability Tool For Pakistan – A Review, Salman Muhammad Soomar, Sarmad Muhammad Soomar Jan 2023

Identifying Factors To Develop And Validate A Heat Vulnerability Tool For Pakistan – A Review, Salman Muhammad Soomar, Sarmad Muhammad Soomar

Department of Emergency Medicine

Objective: This review will provide better insight into developing and validating a heat vulnerability assessment tool for Pakistan.
Methods:
A literature search was done to identify studies onon heat vulnerability assessment published from January 2012 to January 2021 (10 years). Online databases PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of science were used for the literature search.
Results:
Heat vulnerability can be evaluated by some specific determinants that have heat-related health events, including social, economic, environmental, housing, and geographical factors.
Conclusion:
This tool will identify heat vulnerability risks and mitigate morbidity and mortality.

Changes Of Winter Severity In Arkansas During 1901-2100, Christian Garcia Aug 2022

Changes Of Winter Severity In Arkansas During 1901-2100, Christian Garcia

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to quantify the winter severity in a way that was reproduceable and easy to understand. The Accumulated Winter Severity Seasonal Index (AWSSI) was chosen for this reason and was used to quantify winter severity by season across the state of Arkansas. The variables that go into the AWSSI calculation are maximum daily temperature, minimum daily temperature, daily snowfall, and daily snow depth. When the snowfall and snow depth were missing, they can be estimated using daily temperature and precipitation. Then the estimated snowfall and snow depth can be subsequently used to quantify the winter …

An Improved Method For The Analysis Of Fiber Evidence Using Polarized Light Microscopy, Samuel F. Kaplan Jun 2018

An Improved Method For The Analysis Of Fiber Evidence Using Polarized Light Microscopy, Samuel F. Kaplan

Student Theses

Using the basic fundamentals of polarized light microscopy, a new and improved method for identifying synthetic fibers is presented in this thesis. Using the equation of an ellipse in spherical coordinates, an EXCEL™ (Microsoft Inc., Seattle, WA) spreadsheet was developed that generated tables of data that provide a foundation for a new and more efficient method in fiber analysis. Intermediate refractive index values for each subclass of textile fibers were calculated based on the fiber's principal refractive index values. The angles of refractive index matching to known refractive index fluids vary from 0 to 90 degrees upon rotation of the …

Ir-Tree: An Efficient Index For Geographic Document Search, Zhisheng Li, Ken C. K. Lee, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Dik Lun Lee, Xufa Wang Apr 2011

Ir-Tree: An Efficient Index For Geographic Document Search, Zhisheng Li, Ken C. K. Lee, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Dik Lun Lee, Xufa Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Given a geographic query that is composed of query keywords and a location, a geographic search engine retrieves documents that are the most textually and spatially relevant to the query keywords and the location, respectively, and ranks the retrieved documents according to their joint textual and spatial relevances to the query. The lack of an efficient index that can simultaneously handle both the textual and spatial aspects of the documents makes existing geographic search engines inefficient in answering geographic queries. In this paper, we propose an efficient index, called IR-tree, that together with a top-k document search algorithm facilitates four …

Measuring Openness, Gaetano Ferrieri May 2010

Measuring Openness, Gaetano Ferrieri

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A method for measuring international openness is elaborated. This synthetic indicator measures the capacity of countries for a given phenomenon adjusted for their weight in the same phenomenon. The method implemented and applied to international trade and illustrated here as a case study in merchandise exports, has a wide range of applications in the socio-economic field.

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

[Excerpt] "An unindexed journal is of little use over the long haul, and many libraries will not subscribe to it. [Of course, we plan to include at least an author and title index in the next issue, but that doesn't count.] Therefore, we were pleased to learn that Risk has been approved by the Indexing Periodical Literature Advisory Committee [One of the few which may not need nonexpert members!] of the American Association of Law Libraries. This means, for example, that Risk will be included in the Current Law Index, Legaltrac, and Legal Resources Index published by Information Access Company."
