In developed countries, electricity has been gaining popularity as a source of energy for meal preparation. Utilizing electricity produced from renewable resources along with efficient electrical cooking appliances could result in sustainable clean cooking. The first objective of this research was to study the efficiency of common electrical cooking appliances—namely induction, resistance plate, resistance coil, infrared, and electric pot— by the water boiling test and the simmering test. The induction and electric pot were observed as the most efficient devices for the water boiling test. Climate science finds that the trend towards higher global temperatures exacerbates the risks of droughts. We investigate whether the prices of food stocks efficiently discount these risks. Using data from thirty-one countries with publicly-traded food companies, we rank these countries each year based on their long-term trends toward droughts using the Palmer Drought Severity Index. A poor trend ranking for a country forecasts relatively poor profit growth for food companies in that country. It also forecasts relatively poor food stock returns in that country. This return predictability is consistent with food stock prices underreacting to climate change risks.

In this paper we have suggested an improved class of ratio type estimators in estimating the finite population mean when information on minimum and maximum values of the auxiliary variable is known. The properties of the suggested class of estimators in terms of bias and mean square error are obtained up to first order of approximation. Two data sets are used for efficiency comparisons.

State energy plans are created at the request of a sitting governor or State Legislature in order to provide guidance set goals for the state’s energy sector. These plans will be critical indicators of energy trends such as the future market share of coal, natural gas, and renewables. If the future of energy in the United States is to be remotely sustainable, low-carbon policies must headline state plans. An exponential-type estimator is developed for the population mean of the sensitive study variable based on various Randomized Response Techniques (RRT) using a non-sensitive auxiliary variable. The mean squared error (MSE) of the proposed estimator is derived for generalized RRT models. The proposed estimator is compared with competitors in a simulation study and an application. The proposed estimator is found to be more efficient using a non-sensitive auxiliary variable.

Estimation of population variance in two-phase (double) sampling is considered using information on multiple auxiliary variables. An unbiased estimator is proposed and its properties are studied under two different structures. The superiority of the suggested estimator over some contemporary estimators of population variance was established through empirical studies from a natural and an artificially generated dataset.

Environmental, regulatory and resource constraints affects the safety and efficiency of vessels navigating in and out of the ports. Movement of vessels under such constraints must be coordinated for improving safety and efficiency. Thus, we frame the vessel coordination problem as a multi-agent path-finding (MAPF) problem. We solve this MAPF problem using a Coordinated Path-Finding (CPF) algorithm. Based on the local search paradigm, the CPF algorithm improves on the aggregated path quality of the vessels iteratively. Outputs of the CPF algorithm are the coordinated trajectories. The Vessel Coordination Module (VCM) described here is the module encapsulating our MAPF-based approach for …

In this paper, an unbiased regression-ratio type estimator has been developed for estimating the population mean using two auxiliary variables in double sampling. Its properties are studied under two different cases. Empirical studies and graphical simulation have been done to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed estimator over other estimators.

This paper provides a new exponential type estimator in simple random sampling for population mean. It is shown that proposed exponential type estimator is always more efficient than estimators considered by Bahl and Tuteja (1991) and Singh, Chauhan, Sawan, and Smarandache (2009). From numerical examples it is also observed that proposed modified ratio estimator performs better than existing estimators.

The performances of the seven different parameter estimation methods for the Gumbel distribution are compared with numerical simulations. Estimation methods used in this study are the method of moments (ME), the method of maximum likelihood (ML), the method of modified maximum likelihood (MML), the method of least squares (LS), the method of weighted least squares (WLS), the method of percentile (PE) and the method of probability weighted moments (PWM). The problem of estimating the population variance is presented using auxiliary information in the presence of measurement errors. The estimators in this article use auxiliary information to improve efficiency and assume that measurement error is present both in study and auxiliary variable. A numerical study is carried out to compare the performance of the proposed estimator with other estimators and the variance per unit estimator in the presence of measurement errors.

The future of the planet may depend upon our ability to increase energy supplies even as we reduce carbon emissions. This conference will address how a low-carbon energy program might evolve with a particular focus on the American West. It will focus on the future of energy in the West--on a “managed transition” to a different energy mix, on the need to nest this effort in a framework that acknowledges interconnections, and on identifying the most salient opportunities to consider the legal, political, financial, and technical challenges.

This thesis uses an efficiency analysis of agricultural systems to assert that, in lieu of rising prices of fossil fuel, people need to come into more direct contact with their food systems. With a switch to smaller, more efficient farms that rely less on fossil fuel and are connected with the communities they supply for, we can avoid an energy crisis turning into a famine. These smaller-scale systems can help create self-contained, carbon-neutral communities.

Sustainability practices produce programs and services that meet current needs while preserving the environment and natural resources for the future. City parks and recreation departments are facing budget shortfalls and increasing expectations from customers. Governments are now embracing sustainability practices to create financial savings while also fostering relations with customers.
The purpose of this single case study was twofold: (1) to examine the effectiveness of one city department’s strategies in outsourcing its environmental sustainability program through a performance contract with Ameresco; and (2) to examine the perceptions of key department employees about the effectiveness of the sustainability initiative. Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The nonlinear trigonometric transformation and augmented nonlinear trigonometric transformation with a polynomial of order two was examined. The two models were tested and compared using daily mean temperatures for 6 major towns in Nigeria with different rates of missing values. The results were used to determine the consistency and efficiency of the models formulated.

As a fundamental part of our daily lives, visual word processing has received much attention in the psychological literature. Despite the well established perceptual advantages of word and pseudoword context using accuracy, a comparable effect using response times has been elusive. Some researchers continue to question whether the advantage due to word context is perceptual. We use the capacity coefficient, a well established, response time based measure of efficiency to provide evidence of word processing as a particularly efficient perceptual process to complement those results from the accuracy domain.

Water and sediment flux interactions are examined in Magela Creek, an alluvial (anabranching) sand bed river in the northern Australian tropics. Dense riparian vegetation stabilizes the channels and floodplains thereby preventing erosional instability at flow depths up to 6.2 times bankfull and discharges up to 15 times bankfull. Narrow anabranching channels characterize > 92% of the alluvial reach and transport bed load more efficiently than short reaches of wide single-channels, yet overall 29 +/- 12% of the bed load is sequestered and the average vertical accretion rate is 0.41 +/- 0.17 mm yr (1) along the 12 km study reach.
