Media plays an important role in creating an impact in society. Several studies show that news media and entertainment channels, at times may create overwhelming images of the mental illness that emphasize criminality and dangerousness. The consequences of such negative impact may impact the audience with stigma and on the other hand, they impair the self-esteem and help-seeking behavior of the people with mental disorders. This is the first study to examine the Singapore media’s portrayal of persons with mental disorders (MDs) using text analytics and natural language processing. To date, most studies on media portrayal of people with MDs …

Capitalising Product Associations In A Supermarket Retail Environment, Michelle L. F. Cheong, Yong Qing Chia Nov 2020

Capitalising Product Associations In A Supermarket Retail Environment, Michelle L. F. Cheong, Yong Qing Chia

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper explores methods to capitalise on retail companies’ transactional databases, to mine meaningful product associations, and to design product placement strategies as a means to drive sales. We implemented three in-store initiatives based on our hypotheses – placing products with high associations together will induce an increase in sales of consequent; introducing an antecedent that is new to store will bring about a similar impact on sales of consequent based on established product association rules uncovered from other stores. Sales tracking over twelve weeks revealed that there were improvements in sales of consequents across all three initiatives performed in-store.

Using Data Analytics To Predict Students Score, Nang Laik Ma, Gim Hong Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Education is very important to Singapore, and the government has continued to invest heavily in our education system to become one of the world-class systems today. A strong foundation of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) was what underpinned Singapore's development over the past 50 years. PISA is a triennial international survey that evaluates education systems worldwide by testing the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students who are nearing the end of compulsory education. In this paper, the authors used the PISA data from 2012 and 2015 and developed machine learning techniques to predictive the students' scores and understand the …

Objective Sleep Quality As A Predictor Of Mild Cognitive Impairment In Seniors Living Alone, Brian Chen, Hwee-Pink Tan, Irus Rawtaer, Hwee Xian Tan Dec 2019

Objective Sleep Quality As A Predictor Of Mild Cognitive Impairment In Seniors Living Alone, Brian Chen, Hwee-Pink Tan, Irus Rawtaer, Hwee Xian Tan

Singapore has the fastest ageing population in the Asia Pacific region, with an estimated 82,000 seniors living with dementia. These figures are projected to increase to more than 130,000 by 2030. The challenge is to identify more community dwelling seniors with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), a prodromal state, as it provides an opportunity for evidence-based early intervention to delay the onset of dementia. In this paper, we explore the use of Internet of Things (IoT) systems in detecting MCI symptoms in seniors who are living alone, and accurately grouping them into MCI positive and negative subjects. We present feature extraction …

Purpose: Freight forwarders faces a challenging environment of high market volatility and margin compression risks. Hence, strategic consideration is given to undertaking capacity management and transport asset ownership to achieve longer term cost leadership. Doing so will also help to address management issues, such as better control of potential transport disruptions, improve scheduling flexibility and efficiency, and provide service level enhancement.Design/methodology/approach: The case company currently hastruck resource which is unprofitable, and the firm’s schedulers are having difficulty optimizing the loading capacity. We apply Genetic Algorithm (GA) to undertake volumetric optimization of truckcapacity and to build an easy-to-use platform to help …

Exploring And Visualizing Household Electricity Consumption Patterns In Singapore: A Geospatial Analytics Approach, Yong Ying Tan, Tin Seong Kam Apr 2019

Exploring And Visualizing Household Electricity Consumption Patterns In Singapore: A Geospatial Analytics Approach, Yong Ying Tan, Tin Seong Kam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Despite being a small country-state, electricity consumption in Singa-pore is said to be non-homogeneous, as exploratory data analysis showed that the distributions of electricity consumption differ across and within administrative boundaries and dwelling types. Local indicators of spatial association (LISA) were calculated for public housing postal codes using June 2016 data to discover local clusters of households based on electricity consumption patterns. A detailed walkthrough of the analytical process is outlined to describe the R packages and framework used in the R environment. The LISA results are visualized on three levels: country level, regional level and planning subzone level. At …

The datasets released for VAST 2018 Mini Challenge 2 pertain to sensor readings capturing chemical concentrations and physical properties from water bodies in the Boonsong Lekagul wildlife preserve. This challenge is in continuation to the VAST 2017 Challenge, where the company Kasios was identified as the culprit in dumping the chemical - Methylosmoline. In the absence of actual chemical measurements in the soil, challenge participants need to visualize chemical contamination based on the proximal water bodies to identify trends of interest. A horizon plot developed helps to narrow down the complete list of 106 chemicals provided to only 7, …

Real-World Large-Scale Iot Systems For Community Eldercare: A Comparative Study On System Dependability, Hwee-Pink Tan, Austin Zhang Jan 2018

Real-World Large-Scale Iot Systems For Community Eldercare: A Comparative Study On System Dependability, Hwee-Pink Tan, Austin Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The paradigm of aging-in-place — where the elderly live and age in their own homes, independently and safely, with care provided by the community — is compelling, especially in societies that face both shortages in institutionalized eldercare resources, and rapidly-aging populations. Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies, particularly in-home monitoring solutions, are commercially available, and can be a fundamental enabler of smart community eldercare, if they are dependable. In this paper, we present our findings on system performance of solutions from two vendors, which we have deployed at scale for technology-enabled community care. In particular, we highlight the importance of quantifying actual system …

Spatiotemporal Identification Of Anomalies In A Wildlife Preserve, Bharadwaj Kishan, Jason Guan Jie Ong, Yanrong Zhang, Tin Seong Kam Oct 2017

Spatiotemporal Identification Of Anomalies In A Wildlife Preserve, Bharadwaj Kishan, Jason Guan Jie Ong, Yanrong Zhang, Tin Seong Kam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The datasets released for the VAST Challenge 2017 comprise vehicle movement data captured with RFID sensors, chemical emission data from factories captured by gas sensors, and image attributes of the wildlife plant health obtained from satellites, all pertaining to a fictional wildlife preserve. Using visual analytics, a compelling hypothesis is established to link the spatiotemporal datasets to the phenomenon, where the count of a bird specimen is found to decline over a given year. Anomalies in vehicle traffic patterns are linked to proximal factory emissions, and further associated with satellite imagery that show proof of degradation in plant quality in …

Background & Hypothesis: The first law of geography states that “everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant things”. This study aims to demonstrate how local indicator of spatial association (LISA) statistics are used to group patients with similar chronic diseases into natural clusters of hotspots found within northern Singapore by incorporating the proximity of their home locations explicitly. Methods: Anonymised chronic patient data collected from Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in 2013 were used for analyses. The data was mapped based on patients' residential addresses. A layer of hexagonal grid objects, each with a …
