Testing For The Effects Of Sediment Sorting On Detrital-Zircon Age Spectra By Sampling Multiple Bedforms In Single Fluvial Channels: Case Studies From The Wood Canyon Formation (Terreneuvian) And Stirling Quartzite (Ediacaran), Southeastern Ca, Jason Gerhard Muhlbauer Dec 2015

Testing For The Effects Of Sediment Sorting On Detrital-Zircon Age Spectra By Sampling Multiple Bedforms In Single Fluvial Channels: Case Studies From The Wood Canyon Formation (Terreneuvian) And Stirling Quartzite (Ediacaran), Southeastern Ca, Jason Gerhard Muhlbauer

Masters Theses

Multiple bedforms were sampled from single fluvial channels in the Neoproterozoic (Ediacaran) upper member of the Stirling Quartzite and the Cambrian (Terreneuvian) middle member of the Wood Canyon Formation, southeastern California. Sampling strategy was designed to determine if sorting of detrital zircon populations by their textural properties can affect detrital-zircon age spectra in fluvial sandstones. Four samples derive from the middle member Wood Canyon Formation and two samples come from the upper member Stirling Quartzite. Sandstone samples vary in textural characteristics: grain sizes sampled range from fine to coarse sand, sorting ranges from moderately well to poorly sorted, and sampled …

Depositional Facies And Sequence Stratigraphy Of Niagaran-Lower Salina Reef Complex Reservoirs Of The Guelph Formation, Michigan Basin, Matthew J. Rine Dec 2015

Depositional Facies And Sequence Stratigraphy Of Niagaran-Lower Salina Reef Complex Reservoirs Of The Guelph Formation, Michigan Basin, Matthew J. Rine

Masters Theses

Hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Niagara-Lower Salina Reef Complex in the Michigan Basin have been extensively studied since the early 1960’s. These reservoirs host an immense hydrocarbon resource, existing as closely-spaced, highly-compartmentalized reservoirs that have produced >500 million barrels of oil and 2.9 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Previous studies depict these “pinnacle reefs” as tall, symmetrical towers with a random distribution of facies. This study utilizes abundant core data (32 cores, 20-acre spacing), thin-section petrography, and petrophysical wire-line logs to reconstruct the geometry, facies distributions, depositional history, and sequence stratigraphy of the Columbus III Reef Complex within the Southern …

A High-Resolution Paleoenvironmental And Paleoclimatic History Of Extreme Events On The Laminated Sediment Record From Basin Pond, Fayette, Maine, U.S.A., Daniel R. Miller Nov 2015

A High-Resolution Paleoenvironmental And Paleoclimatic History Of Extreme Events On The Laminated Sediment Record From Basin Pond, Fayette, Maine, U.S.A., Daniel R. Miller

Masters Theses

Future impacts from climate change can be better understood by placing modern climate trends into perspective through extension of the short instrumental records of climate variability. This is especially true for extreme climatic events, such as extreme precipitation and wildfires, as the period of instrumental records provides only a few examples and these have likely have been influenced by anthropogenic warming. Multi-parameter records showing the past range of climate variability can be obtained from lakes. Lakes are particularly good recorders of climate variability because sediment from the surrounding environment accumulates in lakes, making them sensitive recorders of climate variability and …

Sedimentological Records And Numerical Simulations Of The C.E. 1707 Hōei Tsunami In Southwestern Japan, Hannah Baranes Nov 2015

Sedimentological Records And Numerical Simulations Of The C.E. 1707 Hōei Tsunami In Southwestern Japan, Hannah Baranes

Masters Theses

A tsunami generated by the C.E. 1707 Hōei earthquake is largely thought to be the flood event of record for southwestern Japan, yet historical documentation of the event is scarce. This is particularly true in northwestern Shikoku within the Bungo Channel, where significant inconsistencies exist between historical records and model-derived tsunami heights. To independently assess flooding from the C.E. 1707 Hōei tsunami in the context of the region’s long-term flooding history, we present complementary reconstructions of extreme coastal inundation from three back-barrier lakes in the northern Bungo Channel: Lake Ryuuoo, Lake Amida, and Lake Kamega. At all sites, the most …

Geological Controls On Stratigraphy And Sedimentation Of The Mississippian Marshall Formation, Michigan Basin, U.S.A., Joseph G. Adducci Aug 2015

Geological Controls On Stratigraphy And Sedimentation Of The Mississippian Marshall Formation, Michigan Basin, U.S.A., Joseph G. Adducci

Masters Theses

An understanding of regional orogenic, climatic, and eustatic processes is critical to the interbasinal correlation of Paleozoic strata in eastern North America. Tectonic activity associated with the culmination of Appalachian Orogenic events has been shown to have regional influence on paleostructure and sediment dispersal in the Appalachian foreland basin and adjacent intracratonic Illinois and Michigan basins. The culmination of the Acadian Orogeny at the end of the Devonian represents the beginning of a period of general tectonic quiescence extending throughout the early and middle Mississippian in eastern North America. Early Mississippian strata in the Michigan basin is distinctive and marks …

Naturally-Occurring Metals Concentrations In Michigan Soils: A 2015 Survey, Zachary Lowell Spotts May 2015

Naturally-Occurring Metals Concentrations In Michigan Soils: A 2015 Survey, Zachary Lowell Spotts

Masters Theses

Closure of hazardous waste sites can be aided through the use of a soil background survey for metals. Data for these studies come from either field sampling or publicly available environmental files. Previous studies were conducted in Michigan, known as the Michigan Background Soil Survey (MBSS). The current update is a refinement and improvement of the 2005 update. New data was collected from publicly available environmental files and other sources. Both the current update and the 2005 update differentiated data by soil type and glacial lobe. GIS analysis was used to observe spatial distribution of the data and to determine …
