Massive Australian wildfires lofted smoke directly into the stratosphere in the austral summer of 2019/20. The smoke led to increases in optical extinction throughout the midlatitudes of the southern hemisphere that rivalled substantial volcanic perturbations. Previous studies have assumed that the smoke became coated with sulfuric acid and water and would deplete the ozone layer through heterogeneous chemistry on those surfaces, as is routinely observed following volcanic enhancements of the stratospheric sulfate layer. Here, observations of extinction and reactive nitrogen species from multiple independent satellites that sampled the smoke region are compared to one another and to model calculations. The …

Analytical Methods For Energy And Climate Policy, Dwayne Breger Jan 2019

Analytical Methods For Energy And Climate Policy, Dwayne Breger

Sustainability Education Resources

Course Description

The course will introduce students to analytical methods applicable to the evaluation of energy and climate problems and policy solutions. The methods include ethical analysis, spreadsheet analysis, lifecycle analysis, optimization and systems analysis. While applicable across many fields, the methods will be applied through class and assignments to current issues in clean energy and climate policy.

Learning Objectives

The course will provide students with the understanding and skills to analytically address issues of policy pertaining to clean energy and climate policy. Students will understand the theory and practice associated with conducting economic cost benefit analysis, optimization under constraints …

Presidential Job Approval Rating Analysis Through Social Media, Subramanian Venkataraman, Subramanian Venkataraman Oct 2017

Presidential Job Approval Rating Analysis Through Social Media, Subramanian Venkataraman, Subramanian Venkataraman

Dissertations and Theses

The aim of this study is to identify patterns in President Trump’s approval in the

Twitter universe through Social Media and Sentiment Analysis, and compare

against scientific polling to get meaningful insights on the limitations of Social

Media Analytics. For the purposes for this exercise, results from scientific polling

will be considered the true measure of approval, and will be used as control. In

order to perform sentiment analysis, we have used supervisory learning using

Naive Bayes Classifier algorithm which produced 0.862667 accuracy levels.

Location And Tracking Of Mobile Devices: Überveillance Stalks The Streets, Katina Michael, Roger Clarke Dec 2012

Location And Tracking Of Mobile Devices: Überveillance Stalks The Streets, Katina Michael, Roger Clarke

Professor Katina Michael

During the last decade, location-tracking and monitoring applications have proliferated, in mobile cellular and wireless data networks, and through self-reporting by applications running in smartphones that are equipped with onboard global positioning system (GPS) chipsets. It is now possible to locate a smartphone-user's location not merely to a cell, but to a small area within it. Innovators have been quick to capitalise on these location-based technologies for commercial purposes, and have gained access to a great deal of sensitive personal data in the process. In addition, law enforcement utilise these technologies, can do so inexpensively and hence can track many …

Professional Intelligence Judgement Artistry: Some Early Observations, Jeff Corkill Jan 2009

Professional Intelligence Judgement Artistry: Some Early Observations, Jeff Corkill

Australian Security and Intelligence Conference

Intelligence analysis is critical national security and law enforcement function dependant on the intellectual capacity of individual analysts. The practice of intelligence is undertaken in an extremely complex environment often under a veil of secrecy, and where uncertain and deceptive information represents the norm. In order to develop as a profession appropriate constructs with which to explore and explain how analysts process intelligence, make decisions and reach judgements are needed. An improved understanding will offer opportunities to develop appropriate training and professional development for intelligence analysts. This paper introduces the construct of Professional Intelligence Judgement Artistry together with some very …
