Switchgrass For Biomass Production, Monroe Rasnake, D. Parrish, Garry D. Lacefield, D. Wolf
IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)
Six cultivars of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) were established in 1993 at Princeton, Kentucky, USA. Two harvest systems were used: two cuttings per year in mid-June and November and one cutting per year in November. Biomass yield and stand survival were evaluated. Lowland cultivars produced more biomass than upland cultivars in both cutting managements. Upland cultivars did better in a two cut system while the other cultivars showed little difference. Excellent stands of all cultivars were maintained under both cutting managements.

Globally, there is an urgent need of research-based technologies for small ruminant producers to benefit from rapidly growing market demands for ruminant meat and related food products from forage-based operations. However, effective forage-based animal production requires a rapid assessment, and monitoring of grazing management needs to adjust stocking rates and/or spatial animal distribution in a timely manner. Applicability of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) for grazing management offers opportunities to rapidly estimate biomass build-ups, ground coverage, and monitor animal behaviour. The reliability of drone-based laser scanning (DLS) for monitoring warm-season grass responses to simulated grazing intensities was assessed at Virginia State …

Wildland Resources Student Research
Plant–soil feedback (PSF) has gained attention as a mechanism promoting plant growth and coexistence. However, most PSF research has measured monoculture growth in greenhouse conditions. Translating PSFs into effects on plant growth in field communities remains an important frontier for PSF research. Using a 4-year, factorial field experiment in Jena, Germany, we measured the growth of nine grassland species on soils conditioned by each of the target species (i.e., 72 PSFs). Plant community models were parameterized with or without these PSF effects, and model predictions were compared to plant biomass production in diversity–productivity experiments. Plants created soils that changed subsequent …
