Low Fine-Tuning With Heavy Higgsinos In Yukawa Unified Susy Guts, Cem Salih Ün Feb 2024

Low Fine-Tuning With Heavy Higgsinos In Yukawa Unified Susy Guts, Cem Salih Ün

Turkish Journal of Physics

The work presented considers a class of minimally constructed Yukawa unified SUSY GUTs - NUHM2 - and explores their implications when their soft supersymmetry breaking Lagrangian is generalized by the nonholomorphic terms which provide extra contributions to the Higgsino mass and couple the supersymmetric scalar fields to the wrong Higgs doublets. With such a simple extension, it can be found several regions with interesting implications which cannot be realized in the usual restricted models. It is observed that the Yukawa unification solutions can be compatible with a relatively light mass spectrum and acceptable low fine-tuning measurements. In the restricted models …

Search For Top Squarks In The Four-Body Decay Mode With Single Lepton Final States In Proton-Proton Collisions At √S = 13 Tev, A. Tumasyan Jun 2023

Search For Top Squarks In The Four-Body Decay Mode With Single Lepton Final States In Proton-Proton Collisions At √S = 13 Tev, A. Tumasyan

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

A search for the pair production of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark, the top squark ([]1), is presented. The search targets the four-body decay of the []1, which is preferred when the mass difference between the top squark and the lightest supersymmetric particle is smaller than the mass of the W boson. This decay mode consists of a bottom quark, two other fermions, and the lightest neutralino ( []01 ), which is assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1 of …

Search For Higgsinos Decaying To Two Higgs Bosons And Missing Transverse Momentum In Proton-Proton Collisions At √S = 13 Tev, A. Tumasyan May 2022

Search For Higgsinos Decaying To Two Higgs Bosons And Missing Transverse Momentum In Proton-Proton Collisions At √S = 13 Tev, A. Tumasyan

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Results are presented from a search for physics beyond the standard model in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13TeV in channels with two Higgs bosons, each decaying via the process H ⟶ b[], and large missing transverse momentum. The search uses a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1 collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The search is motivated by models of supersymmetry that predict the production of neutralinos, the neutral partners of the electroweak gauge and Higgs bosons. The observed event yields in the signal regions are found to be consistent with …

Search For Electroweak Production Of Charginos And Neutralinos In Proton-Proton Collisions At √S = 13 Tev, A. Tumasyan

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

A direct search for electroweak production of charginos and neutralinos is presented. Events with three or four leptons, with up to two hadronically decaying τ leptons, or two same-sign light leptons are analyzed. The data sample consists of 137 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions with a center of mass energy of 13TeV, recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC. The results are interpreted in terms of several simplified models. These represent a broad range of production and decay scenarios for charginos and neutralinos. A parametric neural network is used to target several of the models with large backgrounds. In …

Abbott, Adam Abed Abud, Kira Abeling, Deshan K. Abhayasinghe, Syed H. Abidi, Ossama S. Alexander Abouzeid, Nicola L. Abraham, Halina Abramowicz

Physics Department Faculty Publication Series

The results of a search for gluino and squark pair production with the pairs decaying via the lightest charginos into a final state consisting of two W bosons, the lightest neutralinos ((chi) over tilde (0)(1)), and quarks, are presented: the signal is characterised by the presence of a single charged lepton (e(+/-) or mu(+/-)) from a W boson decay, jets, and missing transverse momentum. The analysis is performed using 139 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data taken at a centre-of-mass energy root s = 13 delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded by the ATLAS experiment. No statistically significant excess …

Massive Graviton Spectra In Supergravity, Kevin Dimmitt Aug 2020

Massive Graviton Spectra In Supergravity, Kevin Dimmitt

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Development of a unified theory of physics would pave the way for new research and technology development for many years to come. Unfortunately, the two best current theories explaining nature, the Standard Model of particle physics and general relativity, do not seem to be compatible, requiring the development of more complicated models which contains both of these at their respective limits. Supergravities are one set of theories which may, at least in part, provide hints as to how it may be possible to unify physics into a single model.

This research project follows from a line of investigation which the …

An Introduction To Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics, Vincent R. Siggia Jan 2019

An Introduction To Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics, Vincent R. Siggia

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, the general framework of supersymmetric quantum mechanics and the path integral approach will be presented (as well as the worked out example of the supersymmetric harmonic oscillator). Then the theory will be specialized to the case of supersymmetric quantum mechanics on Riemannian manifolds, which will start from a supersymmetric Lagrangian for the general case and the special case for S2. Afterwards, there will be a discussion on the superfield formalism. Concluding this thesis will be the Hamiltonian formalism followed by the inclusion of deforma- tions by potentials.

Search For Supersymmetry In Proton-Proton Collisions At 13 Tev With The Cms Detector Using Identified Top Quarks, Yagya R. Joshi

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A search for supersymmetry is presented based on proton-proton collision events containing identified hadronically decaying top quarks (i.e., events with no identified leptons), and an imbalance EmissT in transverse momentum. The data were collected with the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb-1. The 84 exclusive search regions are defined in terms of the multiplicity of bottom quark jet and top quark candidates, the missing energy, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta HT, and …

Supersymmetry And The Math Of Adinkras, Ari Putt Spiesberger Jan 2018

Supersymmetry And The Math Of Adinkras, Ari Putt Spiesberger

Senior Projects Fall 2018

The purpose of this paper is to expand the dictionary of values related to parameterized supersymmetry values. These values, represented by Adinkras, are some of the most fascinating explanations of theoretical supersymmetry that exist. My goal was to approach and define an equivalence class on a specific value that had yet to be defined. I was able to do this, and in doing so, present information on a larger equivalence class in the field surrounding Adinkras.

Topics In High-Energy Physics: The Proton Magnetic Radius And Phenomenology Of Z0 Mediation Of Supersymmetry Breaking, Joydeep Roy

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation describes two topics in high-energy physics. In the first we describe the

extraction of the magnetic radius of the proton. In the second we impose LHC constraints on

the combined anomaly and Z’ mediation mechanisms of supersymmetry breaking.

We combine constraints from analyticity with experimental electron-proton scattering data

to determine the proton magnetic radius without model-dependent assumptions on the shape

of the form factor. We also study the impact of including electron-neutron scattering data,

and ππ ! NN¯ data. Using representative datasets we find for a cut of Q2 ≤ 0:5 GeV2,

Results are presented from a search for the electroweak production of supersymmetric particles in pp collisions in final states with two τ leptons. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity between 18.1 fb−1 and 19.6 fb−1 depending on the final state of τ lepton decays, at s=8 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The observed event yields in the signal regions are consistent with the expected standard model backgrounds. The results are interpreted using simplified models describing the pair production and decays of charginos or τ sleptons. For models describing the pair production of the lightest …

Unification Of Gravity And Quantum Theory, Adam Daniels Jan 2017

Unification Of Gravity And Quantum Theory, Adam Daniels

Faculty-Sponsored Student Research & Capstones

An overview of the four fundamental forces of physics as described by the Standard Model (SM) and prevalent unifying theories beyond it is provided. Background knowledge of the particles governing the fundamental forces is provided, as it will be useful in understanding the way in which the unification efforts of particle physics has evolved, either from the SM, or apart from it. It is shown that efforts to provide a quantum theory of gravity have allowed supersymmetry (SUSY) and M-Theory to become two of the prevailing theories for unifying gravity with the remaining non-gravitational forces.

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The results of a search for new physics in final states with photons and missing transverse energy are reported. The study is based on a sample of proton–proton collisions collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector in 2015, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb−1. Final states with two photons and significant missing transverse energy are used to search for supersymmetric particles in models of supersymmetry (SUSY) with general gauge-mediated (GGM) supersymmetry breaking. No excess is observed with respect to the standard model expectation, and the results are used to set limits on gluino …

Hidden Symmetries In String Theory, Iurii Chervonyi

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In this thesis we study hidden symmetries within the framework of string theory. Symmetries play a very important role in physics: they lead to drastic simplifications, which allow one to compute various physical quantities without relying on perturbative techniques.

Quantum Inspired Symmetries In Laser Engineering, Mohammad Hosain Teimourpour Jan 2017

Quantum Inspired Symmetries In Laser Engineering, Mohammad Hosain Teimourpour

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

In this thesis, quantum inspired symmetries including Parity-Time (PT) symmetry and Supersymmetry (SUSY) have been studied in the context of non-Hermitian engineered laser systems. This thesis starts with a short review of semiconductor lasers theory in second chapter, followed by an introduction to quantum inspired symmetries: PT symmetry and SUSY in optics and photonics in chapter three.

In chapter four, we have studied the robustness and mode selectivity in PT symmetric lasers. We investigate two important aspects of PT symmetric photonic molecule lasers, namely the robustness of their single longitudinal mode operation against instabilities triggered by spectral hole burning effects, …

A search for dark matter particles directly produced in proton-proton collisions recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 18.8 fb−1, at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The event selection requires at least two jets and no isolated leptons. The razor variables are used to quantify the transverse momentum balance in the jet momenta. The study is performed separately for events with and without jets originating from b quarks. The observed yields are consistent with the expected backgrounds and, depending on the nature of the production mechanism, dark matter …

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

A search is presented for physics beyond the standard model in final states with two opposite-sign, same-flavor leptons, jets, and missing transverse momentum. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2015. The analysis uses the invariant mass of the lepton pair, searching for a kinematic edge or a resonant-like excess compatible with the Z boson mass. Both search modes use several event categories in order to increase the sensitivity to new physics. These categories are based on the rapidity of the …

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Searches for new physics by the CMS collaboration are interpreted in the framework of the phenomenological minimal supersymmetric standard model (pMSSM). The data samples used in this study were collected at s=7 and 8 TeV and have integrated luminosities of 5.0 fb−1and 19.5 fb−1, respectively. A global Bayesian analysis is performed, incorporating results from a broad range of CMS supersymmetry searches, as well as constraints from other experiments. Because the pMSSM incorporates several well-motivated assumptions that reduce the 120 parameters of the MSSM to just 19 parameters defined at the electroweak scale, it is possible to assess the results of …

Using Precise Measurements Of Muon G-2 To Constrain New Physics, Evan M. Heintz Apr 2016

Using Precise Measurements Of Muon G-2 To Constrain New Physics, Evan M. Heintz

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

We study the contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon from theories beyond the Standard Model, specifically supersymmetry. Results found at Brookhaven National Laboratory in 2001 during the E821 experiment indicate that current theories may not fully account for all of the interactions between the muon and fundamental gauge bosons. We re-derive Dirac's famous result of g=2. We then reproduce the one loop contributions from electroweak theory to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. We then use these calculations as a template for theories that go beyond the Standard Model. We show illustrative results for minimal supersymmetry …

Kl−Ks Mass Difference And Supersymmetric Left-Right-Symmetric Theories, Asim Gangopadhyaya Feb 2016

Kl−Ks Mass Difference And Supersymmetric Left-Right-Symmetric Theories, Asim Gangopadhyaya

Asim Gangopadhyaya

The supersymmetric contributions to the KL−KS mass difference makes the previously obtained bounds on the right-handed scale (MR>1.6 TeV) much weaker. This raises the interesting possibility that the left-right model could be tested as an alternative to SUL(2)⊗U(1) at low energies. Also we find that to demand that the supersymmetric contribution to the KL−KS mass difference be less than 3.5×10−15 GeV requires that scalar-quark masses be more than 400 GeV.

Shape Invariance And Its Connection To Potential Algebra, Asim Gangopadhyaya, Jeffrey Mallow, Uday Sukhatme Jan 2016

Shape Invariance And Its Connection To Potential Algebra, Asim Gangopadhyaya, Jeffrey Mallow, Uday Sukhatme

Asim Gangopadhyaya

Exactly solvable potentials of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics are known to be shape invariant. For these potentials, eigenvalues and eigenvectors can be derived using well known methods of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The majority of these potentials have also been shown to possess a potential algebra, and hence are also solvable by group theoretical techniques. In this paper, for a subset of solvable problems, we establish a connection between the two methods and show that they are indeed equivalent.

A search for supersymmetry involving events with at least one photon, one electron or muon, and large missing transverse momentum has been performed by the CMS experiment. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1 of pp collisions at s=8 TeV, produced at the CERN LHC. No excess of events is observed beyond expectations from standard model processes. The result of the search is interpreted in the context of a general model of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking, where the charged and neutral winos are the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particles. Within this model, winos with a mass up to 360 …

A search for new physics is performed based on all-hadronic events with large missing transverse momentum produced in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV. The data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb-1, was collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2015. The data are examined in search regions of jet multiplicity, tagged bottom quark jet multiplicity, missing transverse momentum, and the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta. The observed numbers of events in all search regions are found to be consistent with the expectations from standard model processes. Exclusion limits are presented for simplified supersymmetric …
