The Primary Volatile Composition Of Comet C/2015 Er61 (Panstarrs), Aaron Butler May 2020

The Primary Volatile Composition Of Comet C/2015 Er61 (Panstarrs), Aaron Butler

Theses

In the outer edges of the solar system exist two regions: the Kuiper belt and Oort cloud. These two regions have a high amount of icy bodies (comets) orbiting the Sun. Comets located within the Oort cloud and Kuiper belt contain an ancient codex to the solar systems contents, before the formation of our solar system. Presented are near-infrared, high-resolution (λ/Δλ ~40000) data obtained from the immersion-grating echelle spectrograph iSHELL at the 3m NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) in Maunakea, Hawaii of the Oort cloud comet C/2015 ER61 (PANSTARRS). Observations took place on April 15 and 17 in 2017 while …

Spectral Observations Of The 2019 South American Total Solar Eclipse, Sarah Auriemma May 2020

Spectral Observations Of The 2019 South American Total Solar Eclipse, Sarah Auriemma

Honors Program Theses and Projects

On July 2, 2019, a total solar eclipse was visible in parts of Chile and Ar-gentina. I joined the Solar Wind Sherpas, an international group of scientists, engineers, students, and eclipse enthusiasts, to South America to make obser-vations of the solar corona (the Sun’s upper atmosphere) during the eclipse. The Sherpas were split into three teams along the path of totality and my groupwas stationed at Mamalluca Observatory in Vicuna, Chile. One of the instru-ments we used at this side was a three-channel (red, green, and blue) spectrom-eter designed by A. Ding, of Hawai’i’s Institute for Astronomy. Spectra from thecorona can be …

Characterizing Plasma With Emission Tomography-Feasibility Study On Synthetic And Experimental Data, M. Nikolić, A. Samolov, A. Godunov, L. Vušković,, S. Popović

Physics Faculty Publications

We present a feasibility study on different tomographic algorithms to overcome the issues of finite sets of projection data, limited viewing angles, and noisy data, which cause the tomographic reconstruction to be an ill-posed inversion problem. We investigated three approaches: single angle Abel inversion, two angle approach, and multiple angle 2D plasma tomography. These methods were tested on symmetric and asymmetric sample functions and on experimental results from a supersonic flowing argon microwave plasma sustained in a cylindrical quartz cavity. The analysis focused on the afterglow region of the microwave flow where a plasmoid-like formation was observed. We investigated the …

Trend Analyses Of The Abundances Of Atmospheric Molecules, Anton Fernando Apr 2020

Trend Analyses Of The Abundances Of Atmospheric Molecules, Anton Fernando

Physics Theses & Dissertations

A new line list for the A3Π - X3Σ- electronic transition of NH has been prepared using line positions from the literature and calculated line intensities. High level ab initio calculations were performed with the MOLPRO program to obtain the A - X transition dipole moment function. Potential energy curves and line strengths were calculated with Le Roy's RKR1 and LEVEL programs. Line intensities and Einstein A values were calculated with Western's PGOPHER program after converting the Hund's case (b) output of LEVEL to Hund's case (a) input needed for PGOPHER. The Herman- Wallis effect is …

Mult-Spectral Imaging Of Vegetation With A Diffractive Plenoptic Camera, Tristan R. Naranjo Mar 2020

Mult-Spectral Imaging Of Vegetation With A Diffractive Plenoptic Camera, Tristan R. Naranjo

Theses and Dissertations

Snapshot multi-spectral sensors allow for object detection based on its spectrum for remote sensing applications in air or space. By making these types of sensors more compact and lightweight, it allows drones to dwell longer on targets or the reduction of transport costs for satellites. To address this need, I designed and built a diffractive plenoptic camera (DPC) which utilized a Fresnel zone plate and a light field camera in order to detect vegetation via a normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). This thesis derives design equations by relating DPC system parameters to its expected performance and evaluates its multi-spectral performance. …

Comparative Experimental And Theoretical Study Of Dopamine And Serotonin Interaction, Jose A. Guerrero Jan 2020

Comparative Experimental And Theoretical Study Of Dopamine And Serotonin Interaction, Jose A. Guerrero

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

To accurately identify and measure the concentrations of dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT) in mixtures of these neurotransmitters without labeling, a comprehensive, comparative computational and Raman experimental analysis is provided. While the distinction between these two analytes may be accomplished for concentrations in the millimolar range of these mixtures, their accurate quantification remains unattainable. As shown for the first time in this study, potential creation of a new composite resulting from their interactions with each other could be a reason for this lack of quantification.

Although this new hydrogen-bonded complex greatly complicates future analyte differentiation and quantification at concentrations typical …

First Measurement Of Direct Photoproduction Of The A2(1320)⁰ Meson On The Proton, K.P. Adhikari, M. J. Amaryan, D. Bullumulla, F. Hauenstein, M. Khachatryan, Y. Prok, Et Al., Clas Collaboration

Physics Faculty Publications

We present the first measurement of the reaction 𝛾p -> a₂(1320)⁰ p in the photon energy range 3.5-5.5 GeV and four-momentum transfer squared 0.2 < -t < 2.0 GeV2. Data were collected with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The a2resonance was detected by measuring the reaction 𝛾p → π0ηp and reconstructing the π0η invariant mass. The most prominent feature of the differential cross section is a dip at -t ≈ 0.55 GeV2. This can be described in the framework of Regge phenomenology, where the exchange degeneracy hypothesis …

Synthesis Of Graphene Using Plasma Etching And Atmospheric Pressure Annealing: Process And Sensor Development, Andrew Robert Graves Jan 2020

Synthesis Of Graphene Using Plasma Etching And Atmospheric Pressure Annealing: Process And Sensor Development, Andrew Robert Graves

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Having been theorized in 1947, it was not until 2004 that graphene was first isolated. In the years since its isolation, graphene has been the subject of intense, world-wide study due to its incredibly diverse array of useful properties. Even though many billions of dollars have been spent on its development, graphene has yet to break out of the laboratory and penetrate mainstream industrial applications markets. This is because graphene faces a ‘grand challenge.’ Simply put, there is currently no method of manufacturing high-quality graphene on the industrial scale. This grand challenge looms particularly large for electronic applications where the …

Investigating The Time Scales Of Electromechanical Motion In Graphene Drumheads Using Pump-Probe Spectroscopy With Stm, Alana P. Gudinas Jan 2020

Investigating The Time Scales Of Electromechanical Motion In Graphene Drumheads Using Pump-Probe Spectroscopy With Stm, Alana P. Gudinas

Honors Theses and Capstones

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has transformed the field of condensed matter physics over the past few decades, allowing scientists to image materials at the atmomic scale, manipulate individual atoms, and probe electronic states on the surface of materials. In recent years, there have been numerous developments to introduce time-resolved measurements to STM in order to probe atomic-scale dynamic processes and combine spatial and temporal resolution. Advances like THz-STM setups achieve femtosecond resolution, but require complex external setups. All-electronic pump-probe spectroscopy for STM (directly analogous to optical pump-probe spectroscopy) has been pioneered by Loth et al., and newer applications (Natterer et …
