Undergraduate research has become an essential mode of engaging and retaining students in physics. At Loyola University Chicago, first-year physics students have been participating in the Freshman Projects program for over twenty years, which has coincided with a period of significant growth for our department. In this paper, we describe how the Freshman Projects program has played an important role in advancing undergraduate research at Loyola and the profound impact it has made on our program. We conclude with suggestions for adoption of similar programs at other institutions.

We present a set of modes of reasoning about ratio and proportion as a means of operationalizing expert practice in physics. These modes, or natures of proportional reasoning, stem from consideration of how physicists reason in context and are informed by prior work in physics and mathematics education. We frame the natures as the core of an emerging framework for proportional reasoning in introductory physics, that will categorize the uses of proportional reasoning in introductory physics contexts, and provide guidance for the development of reliable assessments. The European Nuclear Security Training Centre (EUSECTRA) inaugurated under this global name about 10 years ago and operated by the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC), located both on the Karlsruhe (Germany) and Ispra (Italy) sites, includes a large variety of capacity building and professional development activities which span from the hands-on training for nuclear security and safeguards actors (e.g. respectively border guards or customs and nuclear inspectors) to educational efforts in both nuclear security and safeguards. Kenneth Brownstein graduated with a Ph.D. in physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He came to the University of Maine in 1965 as a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Brownstein was a prolific author of articles and served as the chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy from 1992 to 1998. Brownstein retired in 2004 with emeritus status. Brownstein died in 2008.

The records mainly contain textual information but also contains some computer discs containing manuscripts of Brownstein's text book on quantum mechanics. Also, includes a facsimile of an obituary for Brownstein, copies of various articles by …

The common understanding of interdisciplinary work is that it is a partial merger of two related disciplines, such as history and philosophy or chemistry and biology. This understanding does not account for the interdisciplinary work possible between seemingly disparate disciplines, such as physics and poetry, and as a result this ignores the immense potential of true interdisciplinary study. Interdisciplinary work has the power to further research, better educate students, and redefine the script that dictates which people are allowed within certain disciplines, allowing for more diverse and inclusive fields of study.
