Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Under Extreme Conditions, Anand Prashant Dwivedi Aug 2020

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Under Extreme Conditions, Anand Prashant Dwivedi

Theses and Dissertations

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is a prime characterization tool used to understand the structures and interactions in organic molecules, crystals, as well as non-crystalline materials. However, until now, the combination of NMR with high-pressure instrumentation such as Diamond Anvil Cells (DAC) was deemed unfeasible due to the high spatial and electrical costs of standard NMR electromagnets or the regular refill of cryogenic liquids for superconducting magnets. Standard NMR techniques also raises technical difficulties when combining high-pressure instrumentation with high-temperature techniques such as laser heating. In the first part of this thesis, we present the development of a low-cost and space-saving …

Decreasing Uncertainty In Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Measurements Through The Application Of Pappus Chains, Ryan Williams Jan 2020

Decreasing Uncertainty In Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Measurements Through The Application Of Pappus Chains, Ryan Williams

Honors Theses and Capstones

To make further advancements in nuclear polarization, the Dynamic Nuclear Polarization Group at the University of New Hampshire requires an accurate measurement of the polarization of their materials. Through a non-traditional method of data analysis, the uncertainty in this polarization measurement via Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) was reduced. To extract the polarization, we measure an NMR signal through the real impedance of our circuitry, whose area is proportional to the polarization. However, our signal size depends on how in-tune our circuitry is with a specific frequency, with the signal growing smaller the less in-tune it becomes. A new method of …

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Characterization Of Dynamics In Novel Electrochemical Materials, Christopher T. Mallia May 2019

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Characterization Of Dynamics In Novel Electrochemical Materials, Christopher T. Mallia

Theses and Dissertations

As our daily use of electronics and electronic technology grows, so does the societal need for sustainable, renewable and portable electrical power. To this end, materials of interest in the electrochemical world are needed to advance the frontier of battery science and energy storage technologies so that a safer, more efficient and reliable electrical future can be realized. This work focuses on characterization of materials primarily of interest for use as electrolytes in rechargeable Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIBs). Despite their extraordinary power, LIB application in certain fields, such as in electric vehicles, has been limited due to performance and safety concerns. …

Magnetic Resonance Studies Of Free Radicals Generation And Their Impact In Different Polymers, Sunita Humagain Feb 2019

Magnetic Resonance Studies Of Free Radicals Generation And Their Impact In Different Polymers, Sunita Humagain

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Studies of free radicals in the physics, chemistry, biology, and materials science have contributed to advancements in those fields. The presence of radicals can damage the material and system in some instances and, in some cases, they may enhance the property of the material as well. Knowledge of free radical transformations helps in resilience of certain polymers and inhibition of the oxidation of food and medicine. In this thesis, using the magnetic resonance techniques, EPR and NMR, the generation of free radicals and their effect on the structure of the material is being studied.

Design And Activation Of Frequency Tunable 200ghz Gyrotron, Natalie Golota, Faith Scott, Edward Saliba, Brice Albert, Alexander Barnes

Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters

Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) when combined with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) yields high sensitivity spectra while decreasing sample acquisition time. DNP transfers polarization from electron to nuclear spins, giving a strong enhancement of NMR signal. DNP is rapidly developing area of research due in part to application of cyclotron resonance masers (gyrotron) as high power microwave sources. Gyrotrons provide a high-power, high-frequency microwave source that can be used in close proximity to high field NMR magnets. Gyrotrons are operated under strong vacuum and within a cryogenic superconducting magnetic. Gyrotron microwave power is generated by a magnetron injection gun (MIG) composed …

Variable Pressure Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Studies Of Ionic Liquids And Electrophoretic Probe Design, Armando Julio Rua Oct 2014

Variable Pressure Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Studies Of Ionic Liquids And Electrophoretic Probe Design, Armando Julio Rua

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Energy storage materials play a key role in, efficient, clean, and versatile use of energy, and are crucial for the exploitation of renewable energy. The improve efficiency of energy use stimulates the development of energy storage such as batteries or super capacitors, toward higher power and energy density, which significantly depends upon the advancement of new materials used in these devices. The new materials need better understanding and description in the electrochemical properties. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) has been an important tool in the characterization of ionic liquids and solids. The measurements of the relaxation times and the diffusion coefficient …
