Investigation Of Time Varying Nuclear Decay Rates, Peter G. Barton, Rafael F. Lang

Since the discovery of radioactive decay, radioactive decay rates have consistently shown to be constant. Recently, groups of researchers around the world have noticed variation in the decay rates of different radioactive isotopes, while other groups have noticed no such effect. If the variation is truly varying decay rates, this would imply groundbreaking new physics and would have implications for practices such as carbon dating. More sophisticated experiments are required to determine if the variations are truly new physics or systematic effects inherent to nuclear decay experiments. In the nanotechnology field, some existing materials and applications are harmful to the environment, not efficient for certain tasks, or too expensive to be fully utilized. Graphene is a strong and cheap material that can be used to improve current nanotechnologies for more practical uses in society. Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) is an orientation of graphene layers that exhibit different properties than regular bilayer graphene. It is made by placing a single layer of graphene on top of another at an angle with respect to the other lattice orientation. Currently, tablets and capsules are the most common ways of delivering drugs. The active pharmaceutical ingredients and excipients used to make those tablets and capsules are in their crystalline form generally. However, a single molecule can form multiple different crystal structures because of different packing arrangements of the molecules. These different crystal structures have identical chemical composition but different properties such as solubility, density, stability, etc. This phenomenon is called polymorphism. Occurrence of polymorphism could be a disaster for both patients and pharmaceutical companies, as the drug could lose its efficacy due to changes in properties. High powered lasers have many applications, including medical treatment and surgery. However, these lasers are extremely expensive and are therefore not widely available. The aim of this study was to demonstrate a method to create such a laser with significantly decreased overall cost and increased efficiency. In order to do this, we explored a phenomenon called random lasing which is a light amplification process. To start with, a low-cost pumping laser is directed at normal incidence toward a multi-layered sample with two alternating layers. Phospholipid membranes segregate into lateral domains of liquid ordered (lo) and liquid disordered (ld) phases when cholesterol and mixed species of lipids with saturated and unsaturated acyl chains are present. To examine membrane permeability and rate of vesicle rupture by Triton in pure lo, pure ld, and mixed lo/ld phases, LUVs were prepared based on the ternary phase diagram of POPC, sphingomyelin, and cholesterol. These LUVs were loaded with 2mM carboxyfluorescein (CF) and formed by extrusion at 65oC. Using a stopped-flow fluorometer, changes in CF fluorescence were measured when LUVs were exposed to sudden osmotic gradients, pH gradients, or 0.1% …

The study of very distant “dusty” galaxies whose visible light is obscured by cosmic dust is a developing field in astronomy. To discover such galaxies, images of the sky are made with telescopes sensitive to millimeter-wavelength light. Because these images are inherently low in signal-to-noise, special image processing techniques are needed to reliably identify galaxies in them. Usually, a software “filter” is applied to a sky image in order to better distinguish galaxies from noise. We have developed a novel filter that, in principle, performs better than the standard filter used in the astronomical community. Our study, which involved testing …

We present a graphical method that can be used to learn/teach Einstein’s special theory of relativity. The “Minkowski diagram”, developed in 1908 by Hermann Minkowski, has long been recognized as an effective graphical tool for introducing special relativity. In our study, we adapted and modernized this graphical method in a way that would help current college students progress from Galilean transformations (based on Newton's Three Laws of Motion) to the kinematics of relativity and other key results. This study has revealed new ways to apply Minkowski diagrams to well known problems in relativity. Here, we will introduce our graphical technique …

Professional Learning Day
Best-selling books, popular PBS specials, and multi-billion-dollar machines all attest to the fascination with particle physics - including many teenagers. Physics and physical science classes can capitalize on this interest by talking about high-profile results, such as last summer's Higgs Boson Discovery. This session will answer some basic questions about contemporary particle physics and suggest some ideas for lessons and projects in particle physics.

"Universities have a wealth of academic expertise from a wide range of disciplines that can be utilised for students in the form of guest presentations. This paper describes successful guest presentations in nuclear radiation that were given to students enrolled in environmental and security degree courses. Each presentation consisted of fundamental nuclear radiation science, human applications, in-context examples and discussions. Student feedback and evaluation was overwhelmingly positive with students giving high overall satisfaction rates for presentations they regarded as useful and relevant. The role of guest teaching in the wider context of tapping the expertise within institutions is also explored."
