Signal Yields And Detector Modeling In Xenon Time Projection Chambers, And Results Of An Effective Field Theory Dark Matter Search Using Lux Data, Gregory Ransford Carl Rischbieter

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The nature of dark matter continues to be one of the biggest remaining mysteries in physics. Astrophysical measurements indicate that dark matter makes up more than a quarter of the Universe's total energy density, and it is well-motivated that dark matter is comprised of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). Direct detection techniques utilizing liquid and gaseous noble elements have become the primary method of probing the potential non-gravitational interactions between WIMPs and Standard Model matter, with the leading technology being the dual-phase Time Projection Chamber (TPC). The Large Underground Xenon (LUX) and its second-generation successor, LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ), are two xenon …

Simulation Analysis Of The Snowball Chamber, Thomas Guile Aug 2021

Simulation Analysis Of The Snowball Chamber, Thomas Guile

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Dark matter is non-baryonic, weakly interacting matter that makes up nearly 85% of the mass ofour universe, as seen through many different phenomena such as gravitational lensing and flat galactic rotation curves [48]. There are many experiments across the globe that are working to find these dark matter particles, but despite increasing levels of detector sensitivity, dark matter has been difficult to detect. Because of this, it is possible that dark matter has a lower mass than originally predicted. A new detector, the Snowball Chamber, could be used to aid in this search. By using the light molecule of water, …

Identical Particles In Quantum Mechanics : Operational And Topological Considerations, Klil H. Neori Jan 2015

Identical Particles In Quantum Mechanics : Operational And Topological Considerations, Klil H. Neori

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation reports our investigation into the existence of anyons, which interpolate between bosons and fermions, in light of the Symmetrization Postulate, which states that only the two extremes exist. The Symmetrization Postulate can be understood as asserting that there are only two consistent ways of combining the behavior of distinguishable particles to obtain the behavior of identical ones. We showed that anyonic behavior then arises because of the way in which the probability amplitudes of distinguishable particles in two dimensions are affected by the topology of the space. These can then be combined in one of the ways arising …

Measurement Of The Ttbar Interaction Cross Section In The Tau+Jets Decay Channel Via Multivariable Template Fitting Of 4.6 Fb-1 Of Data Collected At √S = 7 Tev By The Atlas Detector, William Edson Jan 2014

Measurement Of The Ttbar Interaction Cross Section In The Tau+Jets Decay Channel Via Multivariable Template Fitting Of 4.6 Fb-1 Of Data Collected At √S = 7 Tev By The Atlas Detector, William Edson

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This analysis measured the entire ttbar cross section through the specific decay channel to a tau, tau neutrino and four quark jets utilizing the full 2011 ATLAS collected data sample of 4.6fb-1. Measurement was achieved by creating templates based on Monte Carlo samples for the various well-modeled background and signal in conjunction with a data-driven derived template for QCD multijet samples. Signal separation was achieved by utilizing Boosted Decision Tree multi-variables designed to identify true from fake taus. The final result was determined to be 165.8 ±9.9 (𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑡.)− 30.0+ 29.7(𝑠𝑦𝑠𝑡.)±3.0(𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑖.) pb which is in agreement with previous measurements of this …

Measurement Of The Top Anti-Top Quark Pair Production Cross-Section In The [Tau] + Jets Channel At [Square Root Of S] = 7 Tev Using Atlas Detector, Teeba Rashid Jan 2013

Measurement Of The Top Anti-Top Quark Pair Production Cross-Section In The [Tau] + Jets Channel At [Square Root Of S] = 7 Tev Using Atlas Detector, Teeba Rashid

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a top quark factory, which is the heaviest elementary particle discovered so far. Due to its small life-time top quark decays before hadronization, and hence most of its properties are not washed out. Top quark events are often a large background in many beyond the Standard Model scenarios. For this reason, a deep knowledge of its properties and behavior is of crucial importance in searches for new physics at the LHC. This dissertation describes a measurement of the top anti-top pair production cross-section in &tau + jets channel. The measurement is obtained by using 4.7 …
